It looks as though the rumors were true according to what Steve Jobs has said so
far.

I guess this would be cool if I had Cingular

Jobs said this is a GSM phone...what about the people who use Verizon? This sucks.

While I sympathize...
by aetherial January 9, 2007 11:04 AM PST
...most of the world's mobile networks use GSM, so it makes total sense that they would not only develop a GSM phone but partner with the largest GSM carrier in the US for its release.
Definitely Cingular
by HektikLyfe January 9, 2007 11:21 AM PST
It seems odd to me that they would voluntarily and intentionally reduced their potential install base by choosing a specific provider like Cingular in this case as opposed to an unlocked phone as we all suspected. It clearly says cingular near the reception bars.

For shame. I already had my ATM card out. Now I have to put it away, for shame.

iPhone already trademarked - Bad Business by Apple
by ssjmichael January 9, 2007 11:25 AM PST
Cisco already holds the trademark to the iPhone name. This may not seem like a big deal to consumers, but it's definitely bad busiess in my book. Apple knows very well that they don't have the name yet they are bullying smaller companies around and forcing it into a legal battle that will cost Cisco money. I know Cisco has not sold it to them since they just came out with an iPhone product of their own (some VOIP phone)

What does everyone think about this?

Trademark different then what you think.
by moogla January 9, 2007 12:36 PM PST
You would be right if both devices were the same thing. If you can show that the use of the name is for products that do not compete then the issues go away. The Cisco iphone is a handset that attaches to your computer while the apple iphone is nothing of the sort. I am guessing the courts either already have or soon will agree. Plus last time I checked Cisco is no small company and in fact has about twice the market cap of Apple. If anything Cisco was trying to bully Apple by rushing to releasing a simple piece of junk right before the Apple iphone was announced.
Boy, they really dropped the ball on the name!

Omigod, they never even thought of that i bet!!!! Or take a look at http://tinyurl.com/yzmmwl
What about the new iPod!?
by salkat89 January 9, 2007 12:48 PM PST
Early in the conference, Steve said that today they would be annoucning three new revolutionary products.

Then he said the 1st was a widescreen ipod with touch controls. And theat the 2nd was the iPhone.

Well it seems like the conference is over and the website has been updatyed with only apple Tv and the iPhone.

Well what about the iPod? And what is the 3rd revolutionary product?

Steve just went on with detials of the iPhone and than got into jon mayer. whats up with that?

Kinda but not really.

Steve said three new devices but then said they were all in one, the iPhone since it has a widescreen iPod, phone and internet device in one.

There were three...kinda.

He said three products. Internet device, widscreen iPod and a phone. He then said they were all in one device, the iPhone. Three products in one, get it?
Sounds great, except for requiring Cingular.
by sbstern January 9, 2007 2:52 PM PST
The iPhone looks awesome and I would get one in a second if it weren't for one
little problem, the exclusive Cingular deal. I get the business reason behind it,
but still, there's a lot of us out there who want this phone but don't want
Cingular (I for one had Cingular it wasn't any good so I switched). Hopefully
this'll change eventually, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Apple Inc. > > > Welcome to the Revolution

Steve Jobs announcement of the new "iPhone" was BRILLIANT!!! I like his down to earth presentation and particularily enjoy the business partnerships with Cingular, Google and Yahoo. Bringing the "best-of-the-best" together into one family unit. Way to go, Steve!!! I like the new name too . . . Apple Inc. -More than a computer . . . it's a revolution and I wish you the best and more than 1% of the market share - Priceless :-)

Apple Inc.; Welcome to the Hype
by Ryo Hazuki January 15, 2007 8:02 PM PST
I personally always found Steve Jobs announcements ridiculous, but that's just my (righful) opinion. And I can only understand the use of the expression "down to earth" to describe his presentation if by that you understand mentioning the company who crushed them every 15 seconds. Bringing the "best-of-the-best" has got to be understood as your personal opinion of "best" because of all these companies only Google is the leader of what it's providing. If you like the name I'd be prepared for a bad surprise... given they are using it illegaly. I'd personally never consider picking a Windows Mobile 5 phone and add it touchscreen, an Apple logo and a ridiculous price a "revolution" (maybe that's me again) but, either way, you're "1%" statement says everything and is exactly that - priceless. ;)

So much talking for a Windows Mobile 5 phone with touchscreen, Apple logo and ridiculous price?
Don't get it, but maybe that's just me. :)
