Comments on: Do new PS3 bundles mean Slim is coming soon?

Rumor has it that Best Buy will soon begin offering a PS3 that comes with both Metal Gear Solid 4 and Killzone 2. This would be the second attractive PS3 bundle in the last few weeks. Is Sony trying to clear the channel of old consoles?

Recession affects a smaller amount of people then you think.
by darkxeno July 6, 2009 12:20 PM PDT
Dude stop watching the news that stays in run down areas just to scare people into thinking things, I have yet to find someone around here that is having a hard time with anything in this economy.
by chris8772 July 6, 2009 12:35 PM PDT
"I have yet to find someone around here that is having a hard time with anything in this economy."

Really? You don't know anyone who's lost their job? I know quite a few. The recession effects people even if YOU don't see it.
by darkxeno July 6, 2009 12:42 PM PDT
Guess Im in an area that is lucky enough where people haven't been laid off, as for effecting me I have seen it. The cost shows up every time I buy food, gas or any product I want for my home, retailers increase their prices to make up for the so called bad economy adding to hard time for those that are in bad places.
by damiandennison July 6, 2009 1:16 PM PDT
@darkxeno
Are you for real? I know the media tens to have there own spin on things, but dam you must be in a dam bubble. I personally know so many people who this economy have affected in a negative way. I know companies that have closed doors or cut employees sallies just to stay open.

The point is still the same with a price tag of $400 it is still expensive and even if they get the price down to $300 that is still too much.
by monkeyfun14 July 6, 2009 1:26 PM PDT
@all

Most people with a education are unaffected for the most part the hardest hit are the laborers.
by walee78 July 6, 2009 1:59 PM PDT
@monkeyfun14
ummm I think that's wrong...I know plenty of people that have degrees that have been laid off and they're not in the labor industry. The banking industry have been hit pretty hard and there have been many lay offs at the major bank that I work for...and no we're not in the front end of the shop...we're part of corporate
by make_or_break July 6, 2009 2:07 PM PDT
monkeyfun14: you must be living right. Or delusional. When I see on the news a couple of thousand local people--many of them white collar types--show up to apply for a couple of dozen part-time or temporary jobs as laborers, the signs seem to say that unemployment is a lot WORSE than I thought it would be.

Now take my profession (architecture). Boatloads of professionals with Bachelor's and Master's degrees...and complete industry in a virtual standstill because of the credit crunch. Worldwide. Many design firms have scaled back to workforces that are 50% or even as bad as 15-25% of what they were only a couple of years ago. And that doesn't include the firms that have gone under as their projects have gone on terminal hold and the cash flow instantly disappeared.

As for other "professional"-level job losses: due to cost-cutting there are plenty of lost jobs out there that likely will never come back (financial, managerial, IT, even engineering), particularly if you happen to be over 45. Overhead-type positions are particularly hard hit; companies are seeing their cash positions weaken and doing anything to stem the bleeding, and those employees that are highest paid are usually the first with targets on their back, especially if their job tasks can be filled by someone in Shanghai or Bangalore. People in this age group get the evil eye from management, because those of our ilk with our decades of experience are seen as being TOO EXPENSIVE. All you lightly paid twenty and thirtysomethings should be thankful for that. But just wait until YOU get all that experience and arrive at this milestone with your "fiscally unjustifiable" salaries. Want to bet that they find a way to offshore your job by then, if not sooner...BEFORE you reach 40?

Do you really think many of these folks are thinking "I need a PS3 while I'm waiting for my unemployment bennies to run out"? Yeah MGS4 will smooth out all their worries...right....and not a uneducated day laborer or automotive machinist in the lot...
by pepsicola1216 July 6, 2009 3:54 PM PDT
@monkeyfun14
it should be "most people with an education" no a education. Nice
by d--keller July 6, 2009 6:16 PM PDT
Unemployment is 9%. It's normally 4%. So that means 5% of the population has been affected by this recession. You and the evening news can act like unemployment is 25% but it's not.

If you want it to go to 25%, then keep running around trying to convince everyone that they can't spend $400 because they're all going to lose their jobs.

Well if they're COLLEGE grads, they probably should be hanging on to that money, as they're at the same time moving back in with mom and dad. New jobs right now are tough to come by, particularly for newbies who don't yet have the on-the-job skills.

And even as high school grads, they'll need that cash for that upcoming year at university; I knew it's a lot more than it used to be, but let me tell you nothing really prepares you for that sticker shock when it finally comes.
by the_iceman July 6, 2009 12:20 PM PDT
the games will eventually be 20$ each, even less used, so you're getting 40$ worth of games for an extra hundred because Sony wants to clear out old inventory?

I guess I'll keep waiting until the PS3 hits the 199 mark

What games are $20??? Only the older games, and Killzone 2 is still new.
by kyle2dotcom July 6, 2009 11:34 PM PDT
That was by far the most ridiculous comment I have read all day.
by ManjyomeThunder July 6, 2009 11:40 PM PDT
If you think the PS3 will ever hit the $199.99 mark in the current console generation, you are absolutely insane. You get what you pay for, the the PS3 is a lot of powerful hardware, and that hardware costs money.

Nobody complains that the Wii costs $249.99, when Nintendo makes a profit of of the hardware. Sony sells theirs at a LOSS and you all still complain.
by ReesesLee July 7, 2009 4:39 AM PDT
Nice....and you must have finally bought your first PS2 at the price of $99 that you were waiting for.
by Kendokill July 7, 2009 8:13 AM PDT
Thos games will never reach the $20 mark. Most used games sell for more than $25, unless they really suck.
by gotaghost July 6, 2009 12:22 PM PDT
It's hard to answer your question, David, because we don't have concrete specs on the rumored PS3 Slim. How much smaller is it? Does it have an upgraded cooling system? Anything else different about it?

At face value, I would answer no to the question. But then again, you could easily purchase the Slim plus those two games for just as much, if not cheaper, on sites like Amazon or eBay. Just look for specials, or find them used. Even thought the games are hot titles for Sony, they're not the newest titles, thus they can be found brand new for as much as $10 cheaper on eBay, or Half.com. Even with shipping costs from some stores, the price might be the same as the bundle.

I don't own a PS3, and even though I'd like one, I still think $300 plus $60 per game is a bit much. There simply aren't enough good exclusives for me to justify the $300, plus cost of the extra controller, and so on.

No doubt the bundle, if it's true, will push units. It's just not enough to get me excited.

The cooling system in the PS3 is perfect, needs no upgrades. I think you're thinking of the jet engine on the Xbox that causes them to break each year. Playstation was smart enough to make a working system though.
by kyle2dotcom July 6, 2009 11:39 PM PDT
Do you own an Xbox 360? I'll say both have their good games, but if Killzone 2, Uncharted (1&2), Metal Gear, Infamous, Ratchet and Clank games, don't do it for you what are you waiting for?

Gears of War and Halo? Thats really the only big exclusives on Xbox.
by jonarosen July 7, 2009 7:40 AM PDT
@ace10134 "I think you're thinking of the jet engine on the Xbox that causes them to break each year."

I've had an Xbox almost since they came out. Never had a RRoD or any overheating problem. And doesn't sound that loud either. And no, I don't have that added extra fan-addition.
by Kendokill July 7, 2009 8:14 AM PDT
Jonarosen, the xbox is freakin LOUD when spinning a disc.

gotaghost, the PS3 really doesn't need an ugraded cooling system.
by FoolishPepsi July 8, 2009 12:52 AM PDT
I think you guys are thinking to hard about what gotaghost is actually saying about the cooling. I believe that gotaghost means does the slim have a BETTER cooling system because it will be slim? Because the slim may cause it to overheat with a wimpy cooling system. This isn't about the current model needing a better one.
by KCFalcon59 July 6, 2009 12:42 PM PDT
If they bundled it with any 2 games I want, then it would entice me to make the purchase. I will just wait and see if the slim will be any cheaper.

Nice dream but it will never happen. Their not going to give you the
option to pick out two new games that are $ 59.00 each, that's 120 bucks
of lost money. They will wait till new block buster games have run their
course and they have collected their millions and then they will offer them to
you an a bundle. Nice thought though........
by shadowysea07 July 6, 2009 1:05 PM PDT
gamespot already has the info. the ps3 slim will be 400 dollars and have 160 gb memory. the 80 gb fattys will be discontinued and they will drop the price to 300. Why would anyone want to get a slim though? the slims have a history of always overheating. too bad the fattys will be hard to find cuz for 300 its be worth getting since thats the cheepest blu ray player i've seen

They have several Blu-ray players on the shelves now for ~$200 or less.

It just goes to show the markup on games, movies and accessories. Otherwise, why wouldn't Sony just lower the price instead of offering these bundles?
by DMAN3k July 6, 2009 1:15 PM PDT
I got a similar "bundle" customized from Dell in March for $398 with $16 cash back from Bank of America.

And my bundle included:
PS3 80GB
MGS4 + KZ2
2 sony official controllers
sony official bluetooth remote

So, I guess if Bestbuy throws in another controller and a remote, the price would be great!

But Sony seriously need to retail their games at a full $10 less than the xbox360 counter-parts, or something. Now, there's an idea!

Games for both consoles people rather play it on the XBOX. And there's quite simply not many multiplayer hardcore games that's good exclusive for the PS3, especially ones with co-op single player campaign. Killzone 2 is the only exclusive that's any good for multiplayer. I'm beginning to think that my PS3 is a complete waste of money since I only have 2 friends with PS3s and one of them uses it exclusively as a blu-ray player. The other one just use it to play adventure games such as GTA and Assassins Creed. No multiplayer fun for me!

Same sentiments here. I have my Xbox 360 with about 20 games, the online system is phenomenal. I own two games for my PS3 Drake's Uncharted and Little Big Planet, I really haven't been impressed by any of the other games, so for the most part the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player in my house. However, having just bought a Blu-Ray player for my ex I can say it's an expensive one at that. I bought an LG Blu-ray player at Best Buy for $225, brand new with netflix streaming. The manger even said Blu-ray sales were down so much they gave me two free Blu-ray movies.

As far as the economy goes it is what you make of it, and it also depends on what part of the country you're in. Where I live unemployment is still relatively low 6% and although business is slow people are still shopping and buying.
by mikedc813 July 6, 2009 1:53 PM PDT

The price break unit which is the slim version won't come with the excellent games
you got with your package and the slim won't have any new features. Play your
PS3 now and enjoy the great games you got free. I'm jealous!
by ace10134 July 6, 2009 8:21 PM PDT
Yea, play those awesome games! I have both, and they are equally incredible. MGS4 has the best story ever, but beware, your movie watching experiences will be destroyed by the awesomeness of MGS4's story. I can't enjoy a movie anymore!
by v12vanquish1 July 6, 2009 2:39 PM PDT
Well , I'm just gonna sit here with my Wii and think "Wow this is *****" ... (The Wii lost its fun last year when Nintendo gave me *The Hardcare gamer* the middle finger.
But i digress
I wouldn't pick up a PS3 unless it got to 199 . I'm actually planning on buying an Xbox 360 and my parents are helping pay because they were interesting in the Netflix streaming. But nothing can replace my PC

PC FTW until i get a virus.

Good luck trying to play MGS4 or KZ2 on your pc. You're truly missing out.

Oh and the $199 price point you're looking for? not gonna happen in this lifetime.
by xophaser July 7, 2009 10:01 AM PDT
the 360 is basically an under power PC, you get all the same game except for a few, ie Halo. Netflix on my 40" and dsl looks like VHS quality. On a 22" PC monitor it is fine. Netflix is rumor to be on the PS3 and Wii in the near future.
by freemarket--2008 July 17, 2009 6:52 AM PDT
You can probably get a used PS3 for that price if you look around. Just make sure it's in good shape.
by pghcraig1 July 6, 2009 3:13 PM PDT
if they wanted to clear the inventory, why not just drop the price now and move the old units out? And generate some games sales. Most people would see the sweet spot at $299, and dish out some money for a game or two. Just seems more business savvy to me to do it that way. If the bundle had 2 controllers, might be more enticing.

I see so many people here complaining that $300 is STILL too much for a PS3. Either you really never had interest in a PS3 in the first place, or you are highly uninformed. Let get this right, an Xbox 360 w/60GB HD is $300 with no WiFi (built in) or BluRay. Now does that make the 360 to expensive for you people as well? If not, then please read up on having double standards. If a PS3 with an HD of at least 60GB comes out at $300. It is the better deal, whether the 360 fans (and PS3 bashers) want to admit it or not. More systems sold will lead to more game titles (for those of you see that as a negative compared to the 360). Before you try to flip the issue and call me a "PS3 fanboy", I don't have either system. However, if I do get one, I will get a PS3 (personal preference) when it reaches the $300 mark.

Yea so an Xbox costs more than a PS3!

$300 Xbox + $100 WiFi + $50 Xbox Live + $250 Blu-Ray player... = $700

That's an expensive Xbox! I'm not paying for that!!
by jonarosen July 7, 2009 7:45 AM PDT
@ace10134

WiFi: Don't need it. I have an intelligent internet setup at home.
Blu-Ray player: Don't need useless technology.
Xbox Live: Useful, use it all the time. FAR better than Sony Network.
Xbox Live: Oh yes, Netflix streaming for no extra cost.

Hmm, Still cheaper than PS3. Esp since DVD's are cheaper than Blu-Ray's by $10-$20 average/movie.
by not2worried July 7, 2009 7:52 AM PDT
But if you don't need a blu-ray, or wifi and Live is $30 a year, for better online... Then Xbox is a cheaper, better choice for some.
Both good system for different people.
by xophaser July 7, 2009 10:08 AM PDT
@jonarsen
you must not have an HDTV or 40" or larger. This is where a blu-ray movies shine and you can rent blu-ray from netflix. I said this before and will say it again, Netflix streaming on a PC monitor is fine, most people have dsl or slower cable and will get bad image on a larger TV set. There will be a daywhen the average home will have fast enough streaming, but it isn't today. I like my PSN free and will revolt if I ever have to play for that stuff.
by Anf09 July 6, 2009 4:25 PM PDT
Ok, so I have yet to understand why people complain about the price of the PS3, do you people know how much money it is costing Sony to produce the PS3? More than it costs the consumer, so you people who are blaming the so-called "bad economy" for not spending money, don't rant on Sony, rant on something that you actually NEED like food, and gas. As far I care, Sony should NOT lower the price, but the bundle does seem like a great idea to sell more. I don't think $399 is bad at all for a console as great as the PS3, and I do not regret purchasing a PS3 one bit.

Reply to this comment

MGS4 isn't an FPS shooter, and Killzone 2 isn't "generic", it's an exclusive game, 9/10 rated (same rating as Halo) etc, etc.

Almost all game reviewer websites have said that Killzone 2 is the best FPS out there, so it's not that generic I guess.

Go crawl into bed and have dreams of Red Rings.
by roachbrain July 7, 2009 5:49 AM PDT
If you think it's expensive, even though proven to be cheaper than 360, don't get one. There is no need to be bitter about not being able to play great games like MGS4 (not an FPS) and killzone. Killzone by the way is the best looking FPS besides Crysis and very different from most FPS games including its first installment on the PS2. Yet Halo continues to be the same game slightly polished for next gen. Halo one was freaking awesome but the abortions of squalls after were very damaging to the original.

Just my opinion no need to get your xbox panties in a bunch.
by Inconnux July 7, 2009 7:46 AM PDT
who says Halo isn't a generic FPS?.. there has been almost no innovation in FPS games since Quake.
Who cares how good a game looks? reviewer websites get PAID by their advertisers... ever notice how highly rated advertiser games are? User reviews on these same sites have stated over and over that the game is nothing special in the FPS genre and the control scheme is horrible... by the way I don't own an XBox.
by Absolution2009 July 6, 2009 4:42 PM PDT
1) PS3 costs close to the same cost they sell it for.
2) You guys say bad economy means companies should help you. WRONG IDEA TO LOOK AT. That's a materialistic way to look at it. I say this because if a company makes money, it gives the people working for Sony higher chance of salary increase, compensation coverage, pension coverage, insurance coverage, etc. so that Sony can afford it for their employees. You want Sony to sell something for a price that's unreasonable so they lose more money, hence sacrificing a Sony employee for your gain. That makes you no better than a leach. Don't think of it just in your perspective-think of it as a WHOLE (Sony Company, its employees, the economy etc.).

Stop complaining and just suck it up. Sony is already helping you by making the price of the PS3 almost equivalent to how much it costs to make.

I haven't dove in yet because I am concerned about not having enough time to devote to a next-gen system. Yet I am thinking of buying a TV for the bedroom and the girlfriend wants a blu-ray for upstairs so she can watch movies up there. I can get a stand alone blu-ray at Costco for 229, but I can get a stand alone PS3 for 339 at Dell, or this bundle with two solid games for 399. They wouldn't be the first two games I would buy if I bought the PS3 standalone, but its better than Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones. Either way, an extra 100 bucks for a solid gaming system and all the media center capabilities on top of the blu-ray is worth it.
