What am I missing? This annoucement doesn't announce anything NEW.

Is Sony pretending they are in 3rd place because of the system design? Ideas like this are why Sony is failing in the video game busines.

The PSP Go is nothing more than a MYLO with a gamepad on a smaller screen and now the PSP Slim will be nothing but the same system with a new design that nobody asked for....enjoy 3rd place SONY.

For the record..I own a PS3 & 360 so please don't accuse me of being loyal to any company. I can afford both but I use my 360 more than my PS3.

Make a sku without the blue-ray (which is headed the way of HD-DVD), wifi (hard line is more dependable), include PS2 BC, knock off $200, and boom your back in this race. Sony has to make a decision between dominating the home entertainment market or the video game market. Doing both in our current economic state isn't going to happen.

Their games are on blu-ray...Knock off blu-ray and you lose all the games. Thank god you aren't running Sony...

They can make it the size of a candy bar but if it still costs $500... I'm not buying one.

When is Sony going to realize that it's THE PRICE that's holding people back.

Bad economy + expensive console? HELLO!!!

It's expensive because the hardware is newer and more advanced than other systems. Think of it this way, does the 360 use only one processor? No. It has to use 3 Pentium 3's. The Ps3 has one eight-core processor. Secondly It features Blu-Ray technology which holds about twice as much as HD-DVD and can even play HD-DVD. Next is that the PS3 has WIFI connect ability. More and more people are looking into wireless routers because they're tired of having ten million wires all over their house. I know a lot of people who buy WIFI adapters for the 360. What people don't realize that Sony cannot slash the price lower because the hardware is more advanced and expensive to produce other systems. I mean you can't build a system for $300 and expect to sell it at $99 ... That's crazy. Honestly, Sony could save the consumer $50 to $60 by making the system Wired internet connection only. But, really what good would it do?

Slim the price, not the size

Oh, and before a sony fanboy comes in to justify what "bargain" the PS3 is because of bluray, wifi and a vibrator... think of this:

If the PS3 was such a bargain, then consumers would have realized that and they would be flying off the shelves.

The fact that they're rotting on store shelves proves that the PS3 is NOT a bargain.

In the business world, the consumers make the final judgement and their judgement is that the PS3 is an overpriced ivory back scratcher.

I'm willing to give sony $300 if they give me a 160gb PS3 with PS2 BWComp and a game.

Until then, sony won't get a dime from me.

I with you there, but some how I don't think they're going to do that... I wish that the ability to play PS2 games comes back!(it probably wont)

I own a bunch of PS2 games, I would have liked it if they kept the backwards compatibility myself - that being said, isn't one of the chief complaints about the PS3 that it doesn't have enough decent games, and doesn't compare to the Xbox 360 with regard to its technical prowess? Using that logic why would you want to play such outdated games? Personally there are a few PS2 games my son still likes to play and one or two I might play, but chances are if you have enough PS2 games to be concerned about the lack of BWC then you probably already have a PS2. Personally I just kept the PS2 hooked up as I got the new consoles. Then again, if Sony did add BWC back in it would just result in a bunch of complaints about how they are so desperate they have had to give the PS3 access to the PS2 games catalog!

@ Byteme2009

Your comment is very observant, and I think you bring up some very valid points. As a point of contention, I think the main reason people support backwards compatibility is to simplify the home entertainment setup. Why have a PS2 and a PS3 console taking up space in your cabinet when you can have one console that utilizes multiple media? This proved a real winner for owners of the previous PSOne. Personally, I still own many PSOne games and enjoyed throwing them into the PS2 now and again. Considering the PS2 has enjoyed a 9 year lifecycle, many PS3 owners have compiled a library of PS2 games. Is backwards compatibility a necessary component for the PS3? Certainly not, but it has become an option of convenience which people have come to value. As far as decent PS3 games are concerned, we?re not even 3 years into the system?s lifecycle. I believe late ?09 and ?10 will produce some quality titles, like the 2 year old PSOne?s success with (then) Squaresoft?s Final Fantasy VII in 1997, or 1998 release of Konami?s Metal Gear Solid.

Also, worthy of note is the success Nintendo has had with their ever-expanding library of previous generation games on their Wii?s virtual console. There?s a lot of revenue to be had with backwards compatibility in addition to current-gen games. It seems Sony is starting to recognize this business model, with the recent PSN release of Metal Gear Solid, as well as Final Fantasy VII, which has generated over 100,000 downloads (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3174911). Perhaps the PS4 will offer downloads of PS2 games?

@ lordnykkon

I agree with you - I would prefer if my PS3 had backwards compatibility because it would make my setup simpler. I had a PSone, and bought the PS2 (slim version) in part because of BWC. I was disappointed when Sony dropped it on the PS3 (I bought a 160gb unit). I think it would be great to have it on the PS3, but I think realistically they could only do that without an increase in price. I don't know if that if feasible for them. I have about 25 plus games I guess on the PS2 and my son still plays many of them.

I also agree with the lifecycle of the system comment - I think the best is certainly yet to come with the PS3. The 360 got off to a very strong start, no doubt because of ease of programming, and the PS3 was hindered (as was the PS2) by programming complexity. The PS2 though started to really shine a few years into it's life cycle, and the fact that it is still selling is quite a testament. I am not knocking the 360 by any means, but it does seem like the gap between the 360 and PS3 is closing with regard to game quality. It seemed like EVERY game that came out on both systems invariably was always a little better graphically on the 360, whereas now I see more reviews stating the opposite or that there is little to no difference. I wouldn't mind having a 360, but for me unless they drop the price or offer a better bundle (Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones - really?) then I am still not sold. I don't have enough disposable income to warrant buying another system at the moment, plain and simple! lol

I agree with what some have said here. $300 and backward compatibility and I'm all ears. Throw in a 2nd wireless controller and I'm sold.

Drop the price of games and I might actually buy something other than Gran Turismo.

This is Sony we're talking about, right? More likely they'll do what they did with their last upgrade ... charge more for more. In otherwords, since a slimmer, smaller, possibly a little faster PS3 sounds more attractive ... Sony will tack on $50, toss in a couple of release titles and a (nobody bought it anyway) DVD / BluRay film ... then, maybe drop their first two models by $50 each warning that the HD quality of new and future games will work much better on the PS-slim

A well designed product will always attract consumers' attention first and Sony is no stranger to redisigns. Remember when Xbox first came out. That was by far the worst looking video game machine to come out since the Virtual Boy, but even looks may have its drawback if Sony doesn't cut its prices.

Sorry guys but the PS3 system is a dead one... The only thing Sony can do is remove blue ray and try real hard to get games on it and compete with the big MS.

This is the same basic story from before E3, picture and all. I really don't care anymore until Sony makes an official announcement about a redesign.

I have to admit that after 10+ years of gaming dominance it's nice to see the PlayStation on the outs. Unfortunately it's Microsoft that is the leader but we're only kidding ourselves if we think there will ever be a "real" gaming company running the show ever again.

I pretty much decided to be content with a 360 and Wii as opposed to having all 3 when Sony took all backwards compatibility out of the PS3. I LOVED being able to go into gaming stores and finding $5-20 classic games from the PSone or PS2 that I overlooked. Now that I no longer have a PS2 that's no longer possible. Sony may have thought they were saving a couple bucks but when I had 300+ games I was their dream type customer. Now I'm no customer at all.
