Where's the standard bluetooth file transfer? How about an agenda page in Calendar, a camcorder & voice memo, a way to hide info/make private? Where's the speed dial/favorites page? Why can't we save images from websites, or create documents & spreadsheets? A little customization would go a long way in making us, the morons wasting our money, a little happy too. Hmmm... EVERYTHING I just mention has been STANDARD on the Treo, and Centro, for YEARS! I'm so glad I sold my Palm stock. I definitely see me taking my Pre back two weeks from now. It's an amazing operating system, but I feel like a ******* sucker! I downgraded to a phone with more potential than any other device available, but with only 1/4 the capabilities. Thanx for making me an iPhone lover! It'll go great with my iMac & Macbook.

Those things will come I am sure. I do feel you thou. Trust me the iPhone is only looking a bit better now, remember this is there 3rd gen and this is the 1st gen pre, which I think will out do the iPhone within a matter of a few months and then you will be stuck with AT&T. Wait that is what I say, it will come.
by vara411 June 20, 2009 6:18 AM PDT
Oh YES, you DEFINITELY sound like an AVID Palm lover... there's NO way you could be some Apple fanboy who just wants to bash a superior phone... (sarcastic eye roll here)

And even if you DID buy the Palm Pre, you should have known that the phone was brand-spanking new and that it would be a matter of a couple months before all these MINOR details are sorted out. You're not a sucker, just impatient.

... But I still think the former story of you being an Apple fanboy is the case...

get a laptop with phone capability in it !lol. Then it'll do everything u want it to do. For me, i'm having HTC Diamond2. I know it's not a perfect phone. But i'm still happy with it 'cause it does exactly what i ask it to do. Gezz
Iphone Iphone Iphone!! what is so great about it?
by storminnormin June 25, 2009 5:56 PM PDT
I'm sure greywethr really owns a pre. With all of your mac lovin', why did you switch away?
by seven7dust June 19, 2009 6:23 PM PDT
the palm pre updating system is seriously something else
doing it entirely via the Phone without a Desktop client is the way it should be for every other phone
and it does it in the background too , which is even better !
Apple you watching !

Uhm actually most phones have been doing this for years including Win Mobile.
by philipcadena June 19, 2009 7:30 PM PDT
Monkey win mobile u still had to connect to comp to do updates think/research b4 u comment i've owned several winmo phones and u could find out an update was available but u still had to connect to phone dwnload to comp then install on phone. and same with iphone so get ur facts straight
by seven7dust June 20, 2009 4:45 AM PDT
@monkeyfun
philipcadena is right you still need to connect to a desktop
also WinMo updates are quite different for each phone etc, it's quite complicated actually !
by Williame789 June 19, 2009 9:05 PM PDT
At least Palm has pushed updates regularly, but Apple doesn't.

Wow what a naive comment. When its necessary Apple will release full OS Firmware updates for their devices. These OT updates are mere patches to the OS. Can you not see the problem that will crop up with adding patch, after patch, after patch on a mobile?
by rsfinn June 20, 2009 8:54 PM PDT
What are you talking about? After last year's 2.0 release, Apple released 2.0.1 and 2.0.2 updates by mid-August, and followed them with (at least) 2.1, 2.2, and 2.2.1. All free to iPhone owners, by the way.
by storminnormin June 25, 2009 5:58 PM PDT
Williams...thou shall not use Mac's name in vain...our you will be attacked.

I have owned a treo 600, 650, Centro, and now the Pre. Right now I'm listening to internet radio on my wi-fi, surfing the net and texting my daughter, while receiving some email notifications. Try that on the I-phone suckas. Also, because the os is linux based everything I don't have now I'm sure will be there in the future. I use my phone for business but I like the entertainment features of the phone, and it's discreet smaller form factor is great. Try, being discreet with the I-phone. That thing is a brick!

Hmm, were you looking for the "new" word [multitasking] that supposedly the Pre does and the iPhone doesn't? FYI, the iPhone does multitask for the native apps that is. And they do all the things you just described. Now what does "your unlimited" multitasking really do much more for you? Improved system performance and battery life? Sure...
by DrtyDogg June 20, 2009 6:55 AM PDT
you can try and justify the fact that the iPhone can't do it all you want, the fact remains that it can't.
by seven7dust June 20, 2009 7:23 AM PDT
no need to be rude
the iphone does everything you listed !
maybe it'll take longer to do !
eitherway nobody can really do 2 things at once
iphone does multi-task BTW with music and email and such

also You do realize that the Pre woudnt exist today if it wasnt for the iphone
just take a look at the UI and the design
plus there are many things the Pre and other phones cant do to !

yeah, and the iphone wouldn't exist without the previous palm innovations. Apple's UI and design are certainly nothing new. Unfortunately (for you), I don't know of a single thing the iPhone can do that another phone can't. Care to ellaborate on your claim?

Anyone ever get the feeling that these Macophiles would phyisically harm you for speaking ill of Mac, if they could?
by DaVoAxiom June 20, 2009 1:10 AM PDT
There is already speed dail and favorite page.

For speed dial
1. open contacts
2.. choose contact
3. in the upper left hand tap on "contacts"
4. in the pull down box tap "Set Speed Dial"
5. choose number or letter.

To use just hold down the number or letter.

You can also add a contact to the launcher in step 4 by tapping on "Add to Launcher". My first page is all contacts that I uses daily.

By favorites are you talking about web pages? You can add them as bookmarks which will be on the first page when you launch the browser or you can save them in the launch. If you are talking about app, I would suggest moving the apps around in the launch in the priority that you use them. All you do is hold your finger on the app icon and then when it has the background that looks like a speaker, drag it to where you want it.

As far as docs and spreadsheets the apps don't seem to be there. Your answer maybe the "Classic Apps" app if there is a classic palm app that does docs and apps. The other answer maybe signing into your gmail and using the Docs there. Just click on the docs tap and then page down and it will say "View Google in:" tap on desktop and it will allow you to create and edit doc, presentations, spreadsheets, and forms. Not the best option but should work and since your documents are on line and you are able to share with other users and computers.

Yeah I was also surprised about the lack of bluetooth ftp support. I'm used to trading info back and forth from phone to phone with bluetooth. I'm guessing that since you have an Apple the missing sync should do this over wifi. It's still not out for windows. Pocketmirror works with windows but only seems to sync outlook.

To be honest for a first release of an OS and device it's been pretty good. I was worried more about bugs but haven't really noticed any. Now if they would just release the Mojo SDK and get more people working on apps....

I found 1 reproducible bug in the phone dialer, but unfortunatley I forgot how I did it now and am unable to report it. Guess I should have jotted it down.

Bluetooth file transfer is a must. I was unable to get Pocketmirror to work on Windows 7(64). But google sync works like a charm to sync you outlook.

Just finished my update. It was fast and smooth. Makes me wonder how I ever put up with WM for so long. I was excited, hoping for a new shiny, but I'll take some welcome enhancements and minor fixes. No arguments here. My biggest wish these days is for the app catalog to start growing.

wow look at all the bashing. I think this was just a article about an update not how the iphone and the pre compare. anyway the iphone is a great phone being it revolutionized the way touch screen phones work. It all depends on your preference and how or what you need the phone to do.

I was told by Palm that update 1.0.3 would allow me to use my exchange e-amil account. It does not work still. I see they have not even addressed the situation. The e-mail set up does not even ask about SSL like my Treo 700p does. I was on the phone with Palm for 3 hours the other day, between being hung up on and calling back. The Tech Support does not know how to fix the situation.

What about adding a special ring tone per contact. It seems like you can only have the main ring tone and no other special ones. For instance... "you've got mail" when an email comes in. Not that I use that one but you get the idea. I can't find anywhere to set a specific ring tone.

Also... Signal issues, I seem to get the worst signal of any phone I have had. I get kicked out in places I never have before. I brought the phone back after only two weeks. The girl reset some preferences which were buried deep in the phone and it seems to be a little better. I still have 12 days to return it, which I might if the signal problem still exists but I don't want to. I love all the features. Especially Google calendar as we use that as our scheduling calendar already at work.

so uhh just trying 2 help. but if you have music on your pre you can pick a specific contact. then choose "edit" then scroll down and there should be an option that says "ringtone" so u go 2 that then pick ur ringer 4 that specific person....hope that helps.

peace.

I ran the update yesterday with the only noticable change being the alarm clock. Guess I shoulda read this arcticle first. I had my fingers crossed for:
1) Flash support
2) Video recording support
3) Faster application loading / touch response time
4) Proper recognition when connecting to a PC

I got the phone day one on June 6th went to try and set an alarm and was getting furious that all the help files on the phone, in the book, and on-line kept directing me to a Clock application that didn't exist. So I found the updates app and sure enough after the update (on day 1) I had a clock application. Of course my weekday alarms were going off on the weekend which left me paranoid if they were going to work on the weekday. Glad to know they finally got that fixed. Now how about the above items?!

The update feature is nice to have at my command. Of course, I check for updates twice a day hoping that some of my issues will be addressed. Oh well, one day maybe.

I still have found no way to connect my phone to a PC to work with files. No software came with the phone as did my Centro, no downloads for it on-line (guess none exists?). I've tried 3 different PCs none of which can properly identifiy the device.

Now, if they could just fix all the items I listed above and slap it all onto a device using an ATOM processor, removable storage, and add movable cursor control (like the thingy on the Centro) so I don't have to randomly tap the screen to go back and change a typo, then... I would have the perfect phone.

For all those who claim to sell their stock in Palm will wish they held onto it when the Pre is released to other carriers. By that time I'm sure major improvements would have been made and those that are bashing the Pre will be buying them.

I have no allegiance to carriers or phones but I am a Sprint customer and enjoy the lower cost of my plan. I will welcome the Pre to be released to other carriers as I know I'll benefit in the end.

You can capture any screen (including web pages) by holding down the orange button on the left, symbol button on the right, and the letter P at the same time.

Now a more serious question: How is the Outlook compatibility with Pre? I heard there was some issues with compatibility and inability to wipe, etc. I currently have a Treo 755 on sprint (it's a market research device which I don't pay for) which does sync with my calendar and email. (not great but workable) and a blackberry 8830 for personal use which has great outlook compatibility due to my work using a BB enterprise server. (but I'm not a big fan of BB os een after 2 years) I am considering getting rid of the blackberry/verizon and getting Pre/Sprint but only if the outlook compatibility is good. Any real life users of Pre with outlook?
