All I wanted from the last PSP were dual analog "nubs", faster load times, and a better game library. When I heard of the new PSP coming out I was hoping that it would solve its greatest design flaw, well to me, lack of dual analog control. I hope they add it.

My issue with this idea of a UMD free PSP is the problems it's going to have in countries that have poor internet connectivity. In South Africa we pay huge premiums to have band width thats upto 1MB speeds and we have internet caps. So buying and downloading games just wont work here as it's going to be too expensive and too much of a headache.

ANOTHER refresh? PSP-4001? Come on, Sony! I think I speak for everyone when I say we are tired of refreshes and want a true PSP2 by Christmas. Drop UMD. Drop backwards compatibility if you must. Give me digital delivery, dual analog sticks, a touchscreen OR slider keypad, a 2.0 megapixel camera, and a killer OLED screen. I won't be able to resist, price be damned.

Also, couldn't Sony extend the battery life of the current PSP with a firmware update that turns off the UMD drive when not in use? They wouldn't have to drop the drive if it turned itself off.

To all of those worried about downloading games, what makes you think they can't just sell the games on a cheap 1G memory card to install on your system?

I am worried about the PSP games I already own..... on UMD. How are they going to play on a UMD-less PSP? I am not rebuying them.

@chrkeller: Well, you can always sell the UMD psp and disks and put the money toward the new one with cartridges.

Ha! they still have the nerve to keep reminding us that Gran Turismo Mobile is about 5 years over due! Wasn't that game a premier launch title for the PSP-1000???

I think the new psp will just be the same old psp design with a wider screen with built a built in camera!! It will probably and most likely not be anything new!!!!! What happened to Gran turismo Mobile??? Im very disappointed that they 'completely failed' to be able to create it (GTM)! How can they get away with blowing off gran turismo for the PSP??

I would like to see the new psp with 1080i screen resolution! I mean, they are going to have to do something really extaordinary tomake the psp be able to sell.
Such as
1080i resolution
Media player (like windows media player)
40gb hard drive
mini blue ray drive
built in hd web cam for skype
some kind of ingenius keyboard

I can only assume you are joking, right? 1080i on a 4 inch screen? On screens smaller than 50 inches 1080 and 720p are damn near impossible to differentiate. A 4 inch screen will not benefit from 1080i.

I certainly hope with all that built in RAM they can make an internet browser that doesn't suck. Maybe it can have REAL flash so viewing sites with flash( most sites now ) can be done. I hope the screen is larger. Not physically but pixelwise. Like 800X450. You could actually decently surf the internet with it. Doubtful they'll do it though.

The mockup doesn't look that great, but one thing I do like about where they moved the controls is that this could potentially be much smaller, especially considering the lack of a UMD drive. I'm all for getting rid of UMD even though I bought a lot of games.

One thing that held me back from using the PSP more was a lack of decent internal storage so that's also a step in the right direction.

I think what could really make or break this is touch screen support and a good development platform that favors customers and developers over contol.

Google PSP 2.0 and there is bogus rendition of a new psp where it slides out in half on the bottom with a touch screen on top. It has everything psp fans have been asking for. I have to believe it would be possible to make it. If only...

All this is very well and fine, but has anyone checked the PSP aisle at your local retailer? Even the giants like Wal-Mart & Target have reduced the PSP section to less than a dozen items.
The PSP was released in 2005 and it's entire game catalog could fit in a large drawer. That's pretty sad.
Backwards compatability is a step forward, but what PSP owners want is more new games.
It's like that neglected middle child syndrome. All the game developers lavishing attention on the PS2 & PS3 systems only.
Please don't tell us we're in the BETAMAX section of game systems.
Next year, the PSP will be 5 years old. Is'nt it time SONY started to support the PSP community, with more content?

Eww, that thing looks awful

The 3000 series was perfect, and what the hell happens to someone who already bought a new PSP earlier, the kind that uses the UMD, are they forced to dish out another $150 for that ugly crap?

No dual analog nubs??? Then what's the point? I mean seriously, they might as well just scrap the whole thing. I dont care what other cool features a next gen PSP might bring, there is no way I'll buy the thing unless it has dual analog nubs. The bottom line is that this is supposed to be a gaming machine. That's where the meat should be. MP3 player, photo viewer, phone, web surfer, ect... IT'S A GAME MACHINE FIRST!!! I'll stick with my old clunky PSP 1000, using it for the few and far between game playing needs that I have for a portable system and save the real gameplay for the PS3. Bottom line, less $ for Sony!! So far, and I realize that the tidbits of info so far are just rumors, I am not inspired to dedicate any time or money into buying or using this new PSP2. I really hope, for Sony's sake, that the rumors are not true.

I don't see why everybody's afraid that they won't be able to sell used games anymore. As much as I dislike DRM in general (and SDMI in particular), MagicGate has its uses. It'd be trivial to allow players to sell games on Memory Sticks, and I see them as the preferred method of getting games from stores as well. Even with fast broadband, large games can take a while to download -- and a download code for a game doesn't make the best Christmas gift.
