Gotta love Apple. They have protected me from seeing that F word, but they allow me to buy iFart. So which bodily function is it that YOU find most offensive?

You wanna try spelling that F word here on CNET?

@Perry_Clease
Did you pay to post on cnet?
by tcr071 March 10, 2009 9:52 PM PDT
Sure. It is F U C K.

It is in the dictionary. Only a "bad word" because we are told to believe it is a bad word.

Did you knows PANTS, yes pants, used to be considered a naughty word. It is just stupid.
by Dalkorian March 11, 2009 10:24 AM PDT
OOOOOOOH tcr071, you said a bad word!
:-D

(No, I'm not "reporting" it because I agree, it's just a word. Words don't kill, people do.)
by ktappe March 10, 2009 1:51 PM PDT
Oh, for the love of <insert deity name here>. Apple, get your heads out of your collective butts and grow up. Or do you want us ALL to be jailbreaking our phones so we can use them as we like? This is not 17th century puritanical Massachusetts, it's the 21st century.

Apple really needs to sort out this approval process. As a developer who has had apps rejected for minor and silly issues such as this I can tell how big a problem it is. You wait a minimum of a week to get your app reviewed then then tell you there is a problem and you're put straight to the back of the queue. They need more people on the review team from what I can see.

Good for them. Apple should disable the browser too, because I'm pretty sure there are some potentially offensive content on the web too.

Good god...this is just another reason why I ended up Jailbreaking my iPhone this weekend. At least now my phone is even more useful now with full blown text-to-speech GPS (among other features.)

I am so not getting an iPhone
I'm fine with WinMo since I can at least curse while using it (more like at it) without MS interfering

by FireyIce01 March 10, 2009 10:36 PM PDT
It's interesting, I really wanted an iPhone, but then they released it without 3G support or GPS, and I was furious. Then they finally released a 3G version, and are being militant about what you can put on it. Screw them! I'm waiting til June and getting a Nokia N97. Not only does it have full touchscreen functionality, and 32gb internal storage, it ALSO has a full QWERTY keyboard and microSD to expand the storage. Add to that all (most) the features the iPhone boasts, and Nokia's standards for reliability (my old 6820 survived multiple drops from heights ranging from 3 feet (falling out of a pocket) to 3 stories (fell off a balcony once), many falls down flights of stairs, as well as being ran through the washing machine (the display fogged a bit, and the 2 key stopped working) before finally being put to rest) and you can't beat them in terms of mobile phones.

I really wanted to love the iPhone, but Apple's policies have forced my hand, and until they decide to loosen up, they won't be seeing any of my money for an iPhone.

You censored yourself by using *** instead of spelling it out. CNET also has terms of service
by Mark_Anderson March 10, 2009 3:03 PM PDT
CNET is also a publicly viewed journal whereas Twitter is a privately viewed application.

Just so you know the difference, Perry.
by Dalkorian March 10, 2009 3:09 PM PDT
I guess you never watched South Park before. They're "curse" words and they're called that for a reason.
;-)
LOL.

(Note: Apple isn't so stupid to think there are no such things as curse words on the internet, so the only logical explanation is they counted them and found there are too many. We all know what happens when you abuse curse words and invoke the ancient curse, right? They're just doing their part to save us all!)

End sarcastic transmission ...
by patrick_i March 10, 2009 5:52 PM PDT
"Language crap"? What about the words "n*gg*er", d*ke, f*g,? Yes those are just words and other than what those words mean there is something else behind them besides what you get in the dictionary. Apple isn't just necessarily protecting us but itself as well. What happens when a kid gets one of these "words" on his device and shows it to his friends and then his parents? Who will get the faulted for allowing the kid to see those words? Twitter? Tweetie? Apple? I think Apple does not want to be put in this position and it's their choice.
by tcr071 March 10, 2009 9:56 PM PDT
Show me a kid who claims he hasn't heard of any of the curse words present in this application and I'll show you a liar.
by Dalkorian March 11, 2009 10:30 AM PDT
Patrick, try Googling that infamous F bomb (or any of your "obscene" substitutes) and then try that argument again. Need I remind you that these devices have web browsers built in and are all capable of that same search?
by deblink March 10, 2009 2:18 PM PDT
Really, it made me laugh out loud: 'I checked it just now and the offensive word--which starts with an "F," by the way--has gone. Yet, somehow it still bothers Apple enough to take action.'

Apparently, you are bothered using the word '****'. A perfectly normal word, around - in its various forms - since the Angles invaded what is now England, and fully explained in the Oxford dictionary.

A report in iLounge doesn't necessarily mean that "Apple took action"
by chieronymi March 10, 2009 2:24 PM PDT
Are you kidding me?!?!? Applying this standard to applications would mean that iTunes is a no-go thanks to Rapper selections and other explicit material...Apple, let's get serious!!! There must be a story behind the story...

Exactly. Let's offer uncensored MP3's but not offer an app that lets the F word be typed in it.

Get real Crapple.

I've said it before, and will say it again. Apple is run by CONTROL FREAKS. Any why a policy of not commenting on the approval process? Because there would be a risk someone might object to their unfair notions. That way, if they don't comment, they stay in complete CONTROL. I invite you to notice, control being their main motto. This is why I will never buy another apple product, desktop, iphone or ipod. The only interesting thing they had was the iphone, but it's bulky any way. Their desktops are just over rated, and makes me feel controlled in a way. Especially when it comes to upgrades, modifications, or warranties. One macbook pro is my last macbook pro!

This is rich, this is the same company that sells or gives away music, Tv shows, podcasts, and movies laced with "offensive" material(s). Why should the Apps be held to a higher standard? How can you deny a South Park app but still sell the show right in the same store?

I can't believe with the smartphone wars starting to heat up that Apple is dumb enough to pull a stunt like this. I don't see how Apple is going to keep customers if developers will be defecting to less restrictive systems like Andriod. I can see why so many are choosing to jail break the I-Phones and I-Pods.

I'm a businessman and I tell no way, no how would I EVER develope anything for Apple.

Because Apple can control the content it has on iTunes (offensive or not) and it can't control what passes through apps like Twitter. Say what you will but this American "I can have it any way I want it because I'm American dammit!" Burger King mentality has not been a good attitude for this country. We've fallen behind the other countries in almost every way from quality of products, healthcare, quality of life, education, etc. The only place where America is still strong is in the military and God knows it should be with all the money we are dumping into defense.

The answer is simple, develop for Android. It will be a bigger market than the iPhone anyway. I realise that is not consolation for now.

My guess is, Apple is still reeling from when they tried to transition dotMac to MobileMe, release the new 3G iPhone, release a new iPhone OS, and update iTunes to include the App Store.

Let's look at a few irons in their fire:
- Palm Pre coming soon
- Google's G1 and App Store is up and running
- jailbreaking is easy (and popular)
- competing Apps Stores, with potential for serious issues
- Mac Clones, also with different, but still serious issues
- creating Netbook Hackentoshes is easy and getting good reviews in tech community
- New Apple style netbook coming out this year?
- new iPhone coming out next June?
- Snow Leopard coming soon
- Google services comparing very favorably (and free) to MobileMe services
- Economy sucks
- Their highly respected, legendary leader is ill

Lastly, but not least, the Apps Store was probably more popular by a magnitude then they planned. Their overwhelmed reviewers probably don't have enough time to fully vet every submission so they're in the mindset of looking for any excuse to axe an app.

Yeah, its popularity is puzzling.
MySpace is another one. People feel way too self-important these days.
by FireyIce01 March 10, 2009 10:44 PM PDT
Replying to blusky08 - MySpace is a way to keep in touch with a group of friends. I use it and facebook concurrently to keep track of where my friends are in the world, and to send them messages that would otherwise never get sent (I have a hard time writing letters, and even harder time sending mail) Twitter seems less important - more of a self importance thing, like you stated.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been saying that for decades now, ever since seeing my first moron blow through a red light with a cell phone held up to his ear (after having first stopped for the light, I might add. Cross traffic was green the whole time, it wasn't one of those "turn light changed and he got confused" issues, he was just a moron who was far to absorbed with himself.)

Twitter is just the natural conclusion of the self absorbed "me" generation.

"Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive, or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple's reasonable judgement may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod Touch users."

Guess this means the new Kindle App will have to go - after all, those authors love to use foul language. I better grab my copy of Hannibal before they shut it down...
