Canadian filmmakers The Purchase Brothers have posted an Apple ad spoof on YouTube that's called iPhone Everything. That got us thinking, just when will the iPhone do everything?

Just apply Moores law to it...every 18 months, Microprocessors double in performance. Someone else do the math, i just got home from class and my brain is fried -_-

Moore's law will eventually stop working as the physical size constraints get in the way. Eventually we won't be able to make the microprocessor any smaller without switching to an entirely different model (such as 3D processing or something else that hasn't been invented yet).

To answer the Q: No. The technology and software are too weak.

If they replace the CCD used in the camera portion with one that had a wider spectral range and better resolution, it would make a great field spectrometer for remote sensing. Sometimes, I don't need to sling a $5K high res unit with me--had one stolen out of car once. I can already hear some out there saying 'tricorder'.

You need to ship that field spectrometer with a Reel Safe Mobile Transport Unit. Built-in, concealed GPS for 24/7 tracking, door sensors to alarm shipper (e-mail, phone, SMS) of every opening and digital lock with lockout due to erroneous keypadding. Would have tracked down your valuable in 5 minutes.

Will it do copy/paste by 2013? No. Will it have copy/paste by 2103? No. Will it have copy/paste by 2301? No.

Will anyone be able to create programs on it and distribute them however they want? No.

Don't put yourself in chains, open your possibilities up with windows.

How does this make sense? You compare a cellphone to a desktop os. Oh, ok ill assume your refering to windows mobile. Which in that case I will enjoy my real internet, and snapiness of my iphone. Also how much longer than the iphone has winmo been out? 7 years. Winmo has been out since 2000. Iphone came out in 2007. So windows mobile has been out 4.5 times as long as the iphone os. Somehow it does not seem like a fair comparison.
by miggy_san45 February 19, 2009 3:35 PM PST
@random truth.
good luck with that full internet thing. how is that flash working out for you? with my windows-mobile phone, i can have flash with sky-fire. my phone is also rather snappy and doesn't have the unreliability of safari.
by random truth February 19, 2009 4:47 PM PST
@miggy_san45
try seeing css animations in your ie. I have used windows mobile on a phone that was more powerful than the iphone and it was not nearly as snappy as the iphone. it had a 500 mhz arm cortex processor. Still costs $100 more than the iphone after subsidies. After you use the iphone you cant say that windows mobile is snappy.
How does this
http://img01.picoodle.com/img/img01/7/1/26/f_IMAGE012i_e9b9m_fe6ac41.jpg
compare to this
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/161/352129965_43693ffe8d.jpg

You can also view flash movies with the icinema mobile jailbreak app on the iphone.
by ace10134 February 19, 2009 5:25 PM PST
You can see full flash and full silverlight even on windows mobile. Just download Skyfire browser.

And you can install any web brower on windows phones, while with an iphone, your stuck with your flash-free browser.

@ truth.
1st of all the dash was n is garbage and 2. that was not really a FULL windows mobile phone.... i have the sprint htc touch pro and it rapes the iphone. it has all the features iphone has n more. also can see the internet the exactly how u do in IE...oh i can copy n paste, youtube, flash, javascript, stream, muiltask back2back, download cracked programs for FREE, record, internet way faster then att3g..... much much more n my battery wont die in 1hour .... at only 70 buckaruzzz a month W0W!...
by seven7dust February 20, 2009 7:03 AM PST
OMG the copy paste obsession is starting to **** me off
if you really want Copy/paste so much
just jaibreak it and install Clippy
or get iblueanget from the app store it's a web browser with copy and paste

or just get another phone the Iphone isn't for you !
BTW the Iphone was never about features it was about implementation
So it's a choice we all have, people should just buy wat they need
and stop this endless Iphone Bashing!

I love this stupid Iphone jail break crap. Why exactly would I want to risk my phone bricking because apple REFUSES to accept open-usage? I love how when they update if your phone is jail broken they break the phone on purpose to prevent the open usage. Apple even says it's not their fault, follow the rules. Sorry but I would rather use my Touch pro with my VGA screen which is almost 2 times more resolution. QWERTY hardware keyboard 5-row, just like your PC keyboard. I don't mind the keyboard but apple used it's Ipod type hype to get everyone to use it. Apple would be no where today with the Iphone if the Ipod did not capture the audience they needed. At this point apple is on the fast track to become a monopoly, I like how they patented GESTURES for multi-touch screens to discourage competition.
by Hardyman1966 February 22, 2009 7:54 PM PST
Uh oh. One of "them" got in.
by alex-cnet February 23, 2009 10:27 AM PST
iPhone snappy? You have never used a Blackberry.

Yep, theres something in this flaming for everyone.
by qst4 February 19, 2009 3:06 PM PST
Truth, are you serious? You know that mess was funny. Will it copy and paste by 2301? Go ahead and laugh. You know its the "Truth".

Its only a matter of time before apple adds copy paste. If you really care that much about it, jailbreak your iphone. It adds pretty much any feature you could want.

Yes you can Jailbreak, but you shouldn't have to do that to your phone when you buy it. It's your phone, you paid for it, you should be able to install whatever you want and mess with the code as much as you want.

Apple wants to try to make that illegal. It's just crazy. Every update Apple makes, they try to stop the jailbreakers. Sure there's people that make a new jailbroken version a few days later, but this shouldn't be necessary.
by lanceuppercut123 February 19, 2009 4:00 PM PST
I don't know what it will do but I can guess how they will do it...they will offer more storage for a few years. Then change the color. Then change the shape, then offer more colors, then make it thinner, then make it fatter, then add more colors, then make it a different shape, then make it matte, then make it shinny then add different colors. Then make the iphone mini then after a few months the iphone classic...Wow I can't wait...

Since the HypePhone don't do "everything" now, it won't matter by 2013.

Google and RIM will have done (and taken for granted) the things Apple should have put on their product last year.

Bit of an overstatement. But I agree with the general sentiment of the answer. I'm not giving the iPhone any chance of doing everything by 2013 until it gets the basics down. It still doesn't have copy/paste functionality or multimedia messaging. My buddy and I were sitting at our favorite bar and his friend tried to send him a picture message and he had to go to some website through his Safari browser to get it. I would also like to see it have true GPS navigation like Verizon's navigator too.
by AZNpeoples February 19, 2009 4:22 PM PST
agreed
look at euro and asian phones, they do many more things than an iphone like video calling (well US is yet to have that)
if a phone can do everything, it will most likely be outside the U.S.

Whats the point of video calling. I had a nokia with it and never used it. May I ask what is the point of it?
by Nataku4ca February 19, 2009 5:53 PM PST
@random truth
its fun, hell u can make those net po** things one it and make lots of cash with video calling

all jokes aside, its useful for families that wants to see each other, and dont forget it actually helps locating the other guy by having the camera pan around the surronding so u know where he/she is...

only problem now, is the pricing if it gets cheap enough id use it
by random truth February 19, 2009 6:10 PM PST
@Nataku4ca,
That what I thought. So why cant I just use mms. Since hardly any phones support video chat. I dont think any carriers in the us even support it. Well, videochat would seem more of a problem to me than a benefit.
by tcr071 February 19, 2009 7:35 PM PST
I'd worry more about releasing a software update to make the iPhone do even simple tasks such as recording a video, sending a picture message, or voice dialing. You can't do "everything" if you can't even manage the functions that come standard with the FREE phones.

Keep on wishing there, Spartan. They said the same thing when Zune came out. How's that working out for you? Apple keeps rocking while the rest scramble to keep up. Sales figures tell the story. By the time "something new and better" comes along... there will be a new iPhone that'll tank their sales.
by Rod Roddy February 19, 2009 8:32 PM PST
uh?....at that point why would it even be called a "phone"???

good for you, that you enjoy yr touch pro so much !

but the touch pro was rated as one of the worst phones
in a recent customer survey, while the iphone was rated highly !
So that goes to show that those things r not wat people want

I believe that Apple will look to develop the future iphone for the business user as well as the consumer user. That would include working with documents, emailing, syncing, GPS, etc. for the business users. And a better entertainment and communication experience for the consumer. The best of both worlds in one.

After 30 years of doing business Apple has failed to remotely capture the business world with any products they have released. I am not saying it isn't possible but I am saying it is highly unlikely.

Just give us CUT AND PASTE!!! I would have an IPHONE now if they had cut and paste. I do a lot of research online, and can't imagine having to copy down something on paper and then type it in. It's archaic! I had one of the first Macs ever made, a 128 with no modem or hard drive... but it had cut and paste! How can Apple not see that this is a good feature????

No, You are not getting cut and paste. You see one time when steve was young he became emo. His parents made him paste his skin back together and it brings out horrible memories for steve when you mention that. So think of the kitties.

Hopefully it will do everything on a carrier other than ATT.

Indeed. I'm not blanket trashing ATT but all the areas that I use my phone ATT is horrible. My buddy's iPhone doesn't get service in the middle of dowtown Boston, and there are entire sections of my home town that don't get service from them. I have heard they have a better prescence on the west coast though, don't know if it is true or not.

The Iphone was advertised as a ipod, phone and internet communicator !
and now with the 3g ,the app store was introduced ,
So now it can install 3rd party apps that allow more functionality
SO
When exactly was the Iphone touted as a phone that can do everything ?
it's all about making it easy for people to use these features !

all the things possible on the Iphone could be done on WinMo devices years back
but nobody bothered with them cause the implementation sucked.
and now everyone is copying the Iphone ! why do you think ?
if the Iphone is inferior why do others want to copy it in everyway possible ?
The Iphone is all about implementation not features !

So if features r wat yr looking for there's a 100 other phones for you
Why ***** about the IPhone ? you have a choice !
