What I fail to understand about this whole article is if you are as big of a Lost fan as you claim to be how do you not know when their new season starts? If you are interested in any TV show you will find ways of knowing when it's new season premieres. And the fact that the show in question is one of ABC's high rating shows is clear indication that they are going to provide heavy advertising for it. This is quite evident in the fact that you saw the advertisement for Lost on the Bravo channel which to my knowledge does not air Lost in any form.

It's one thing for a DVR to have technical issues and lose it's programming. That's quite understandable but the fact that you, as a fan of Lost, didn't know of Lost's premiere until a few hours after it aired is another story.

If you have an iPhone get the TV Forecast application, works great!

If you miss a primetime show, you can always catch it the next day online on the networks website.

In a choice between "Lost" and "Lie to Me" on Fox, I chose the latter. Much better show.

Such is the problem with only watching things on your DVR. I record a lot of shows but the most important ones; 24 and Lost I watch live. Even with the commercials there is still something about watching a show like that live. Throughout the day I also make sure to watch some normal TV that I know will have commercials I want to see to remind me about upcoming events, shows, and happenings. Ads do have some uses.

PS - Comcast needs better DVR software, their boxes suck. I can set a series recording and it will record every instance of a show even though I say only to record new episodes. The cable companies are putting a monopoly on the DVR because without their box you don't get all the digital channels or On Demand stuff.

I understand-using a DVR results in missing/skipping commercials. So what about all those ads online? In magazines? I think I even heard a few on the radio. It even came up in the conversation on a sports talk show I watched. You'd think someone writing for Cnet would be more "connected". Besides any Lost fan should know when the season premiere is.

How can you write for Cnet and be using a cable box DVR??? Those things suck, I returned mine as soon as I tried to set it up and realized it wanted me to tell it what time to record and it had no idea what show was really on and it just worked in windows of time! Coming from a Tivo box you should be able to see right away the huge gaps in what the comcast box does.

Get the HD tivo with cable card so you have a season pass feature and this never happens again.

How could you not realize Lost was coming back though???? Did you not notice it didnt start back at the kick off of the Fall season and at least wonder when it was coming back on????

I agree with most of the commenters in that having this post on cnet.com severely detracts from cnet's reputation.

Sorry - even if you fast forward through commercials - how could you not know that Lost was coming back on January 21st. I fast forward through commercials - but I can still see what's showing on the screen - and always stop ff when I see an ad for Lost . In addition, it was all over the Internet. You just blew it!

My DVR picked it up. That is the point isn't it? You tell it what shows you want to record, it records them then you watch them when you want. This article sounds like a weak attempt at bashing DVRs. Is there some kick back from the advertisers for this article? I never needed to watch a commercial to know when Lost was resuming. I haven't watched a commercial in four years now. I haven't missed a show either. As for new shows. I read up on the on the Internet to see if it would be something that would interest me then I record an episode. If I like it I set a timer to record it when it comes on. If not, I delete it. The DVR is the best thing that happened to TV since the VCR...but better.
