I sure hope Sony can pull it off. BTW, Dell has the 80GB model on it's website for $339.99. With BR discs at Wal-Mart now starting in the $10 range, the BR media is starting to pick up steam. My PS3 is the center of my home media experience. Now don't get me wrong, I do use it for gaming and there are more good games than I can afford or have the time to play, so it more than meets my needs for a gaming console. I use every feature of the console. But these are my favorites: I stream my HD home movies, photos, and music from my network attached storage device, rent/buy movies (hd and sd), and games from the Playstation Network. However, the best feature for me as a traveling professional is the remote play feature...this is the best, perhaps most unadvertised feature of the PS3/PSP combo.

The PS3 suffers from the court of public opinion's negative view. It came out and was immediately decried for being too expensive and lacking quality games. After hearing repeatedly that something isn't worth getting, the only thing that will change your mind or solidify that opinion is hands on experience. After playing a PS3, I realized it is a fun console and one that I hope to eventually get. The games are slowly trickling in, and if this rumor has any truth to it, a price drop will definitely boost numbers.

do you know yet wether or not the newly priced PS3 will continue without the backward compatibility? Because that would be really really nice if it did. I know that it is annoying how the current one does without this ability.

i'll buy the wii for when im bored or need to somewhat get active and the ps3 for my overall entertainment (music, video, internet, and bluray)
by joeman13 January 20, 2009 1:55 PM PST
why are you complaining about the price.the ps3 has many features.if you think about it in the long run the 360 is more money if you use live.also if you dont want a cord going across your house you need to buy a wirelees thingie.then again the 360 comes with a kung fu panda game and a lego game and we all know how much 360 players love kung fu panda.

I think this is a make or break situation for sony. If they lower thier price to 299 then it will be a far better value than the xbox 360, even after a 249 price point. The ps3 has free internet and the 360 has a subscription service ($50 a year). The Ps3 has bluray and the xbox doesnt. Some stuff that u think will be standard like built in wireless is not on the 360 (50 for the adapter) but on the ps3. I don't think the economic situation right now affects gamers decisions on whether they are gonna buy or not buy a console. Each month millions of consoles are sold, with the ps3 being more powerful, reliable, and now a better value than the 360 they will win over a huge marketshare in the gaming biz, but i doubt it will catch up to the wii in time for the next generations (2011 - 2014)

and finally if u were able to read my entire comment filled with run on sentencces i envy you:)

ok im getting sick of all you ps3 bashers!!now get this into your thick skulls..ps3 is and will always be the better system i havent heard of any new bugs or crashing systems since its release and if you didnt realize its not sonys fault our economy is crappy, trust me if people had the money that they were waisting on $6 packs of ciggaretts and $4/gallon gas and so on sonys sails would overlap microsofts, and everyones all like blue ray is worthless and it doesnt do anything for game graphics and quality..bull s**t all that space will allow for better high quality games because the graphic engines for the game its self is put on the disk to work with the graphics on the system, simple dvd type games dont hold as much memory as blue ray and so for that reason alone plus the 360 being a peace of garbage it will never ever surpass ps3's graphics and just wait every ps3 fan on here knows once taxes come and our new stimulous checks come microsoft might as well put in the towel because sony is comming with the one two punch to k'o' there *****...WATCH!!!!sony isnt as dumb as everyone thinks they are they were in this possition before and have been around a hell of a lot longer then microsoft and will find a way if they havent already to get out of this!!microsoft better watch and learn because here comes the hat trick, they might as well stick to computer software because video games is were sony shines!!!playstation 4 ever!!

MS - maybe they can afford to cut the price.

Sony - not a chance, they are still losing too much money on a per unit basis to even consider a price cut.

Sony will only drop the price when the can get the cost structure lower. Incremental revenue from selling more units right now will not offset the incremental cost of producing those units so its a losing situation for them.

geeze id hate to see allthose faces on all those haters when sony pulls it off, your all just waisting your breath, well atleast your fingers typing all these anti sony comments, sony will pull it off and like i said they've been around way longer than microsoft and doubt very likely that theyll ever fall, microsoft is a strong computer software company and thats about it they never belonged in the gamming industry as it was and is lucky they got as far as they did but sony in the end will be on top-trust !!they had the prices the way they were so all the richy rich people would buy them and now that the economy is the way it is now its the perfect time to strike the middle/lower class people, sony isnt as stupid as every one thinks they have high paid people who figure this stuff out before its even on the shelves so i trust once taxes and stimulous checks are issued they will be back on top, and then you have all the classic ps3 games comming out and classics are always cheap so people will more than likely be buying some with there new ps3 systems, plus any new titles comming out wich if you watch tv or read the gamming mags youd know theres a whole bunch comming our way so i have no doubt in my mind that sony and the best gamming system on this planet the ps3 will pull through, enough said and i dont have to say anouther word because youll see first hand what happenes,so just wait and see who wins!!

the price is good but look at the ps2 it's the world most popular game and it's 2009 and people are still buying it if Sony can make a best selling game console why can't only go back and see what they did to the ps2 so they can improve the ps3 and furthermore the 60gb and 20gb ps3 they were selling due to the backward compatibility and even though there rare to find people are trying to find them even the wii and xbox 360 have compatibility and they're selling so all the ps3 just need to put backward compatibility on the ps3 so people can play the ps2 games and the games and accessories must be reduced at a good price and the ps3 should have more features to it it can beat the xbox 360 sells

As soon as Sony drops the price I will be on my way to get one. I have been putting off getting a xbox 360 because it will cost me an extra hundred to get the wireless internet adapter, which come standard with the PS3.

Let me just say I?m glad Xbox is in the game with ps3. If they weren't, then we'd all be paying $600.00 for a ps3 or we'd be bored in about 10 minutes of playing wii tennis. Now I only have an Xbox 360 because when I bought it for $250.00, it was $250.00 cheaper then a $500.00 ps3. But I would've rather bought a ps3. Xbox doesn't care about its consumers, it try's to nickel and dime them with every little thing (hdd, wireless, Xbox live, HD DVD player "I feel sorry for anyone who bought one" and even batteries). Think about it, you never have to buy batteries for a ps3. Plus google "red ring of death" and you'll see how MS is trying to avoid taking care their mistake of rushing the release of 360, just to beat the ps3 release. And now they're being sued class action style.

Ps3 will outlast 360 for one season, Blu Ray. And not because of movies, but because of games. You know how when there's a game released for ps3 and ps2 or xbox360 and regular Xbox, there is a huge difference between the new platform and old platform. what's going to happen when 360 meets it's full potential with 9gb DVDs and ps3 still has way more to go with 50gb Blu Ray? (It?s already happening with the game "RAGE"). 360 will be like that old platforms and if MS wants to keep up, they'll have to release a next gen console. I can only imagine how much that'll cost. And when that happens if all you have is a 360, it'll be buy a "by then" cheap ps3 or an over priced next gen console. And how much better then 1080p can you get? So I don't see how a next gen console could be any better then a ps3.

Pardon the poor grammar.

Hear are some facts to think about. First, PS3 is $400 and XBox is $300. Easy right? Get a XBox at $300 plus "Membership Fees" lets Gold Member, About $350 or so. Oh, don't forget 99% of the things on XBox cost money so I'm not even gonna go there. You don't get any special treatment from Microsoft for paying for a membership, a lot of people think you do. You don't get dedicated servers. Actually, you don't get ANYTHING different that the PS3 gets, besides a couple different features which are pointless. By the time you get done paying for everything on XBox, you'll spend way more than just buying a PS3.

Second, the PS3's graphics compared to XBox may be close, but the cross platform games that are use to compare are also made on XBox consoles first, then transferred to PS3. Try comparing exclusive games and see whats better. When the PS2 first came out, the graphics were great, for that era!!! As time went on and the original XBox came, those graphics were amazing, but PS2's were right there with it!!! As of now the PS2 is maxed out and way better than the original XBox's graphics ever were. The power and technology of the PS3 hasn't been close to being tapped into yet and it still looks amazing! Picture this, the PS2 from day 1 compared with PS2 now!!! OMG what a difference!!! Unreal!!! Now, Imagine the PS3 now compared to the PS3 10 years from now!!! I cant wait!!! XBox 360 hasn't change at all since it came out.

XBox WILL FALL just because the BluRay format won!!! Now before you fanboys go crazy, listen closely. Sony owns BluRay, all DVD formats besides BluRay are stopping production within the next year. DVD's will soon be like VHS tapes and Cassette tapes. Microsoft will NOT get BluRay on XBox because Sony owns it. Sony will happily sell them the right to use it but if that happened, every XBox sold would put money in Sony's pocket. All the games made on BluRay for XBox would profit..... guess who..... SONY!!!!! Anyway you look at it PS3 will last! Numbers now mean nothing. It's what the future holds for Sony, Power!!!

I have to disagree here..Membership is closer to $30 now..
Online is better on Xbox... You are paying for a better features worth the $2.35 a month to me.
There is a difference. Most people will agree the Xbox online is simple better.. worth the money..

A lot of developers are saying they are having a hard time programing for the PS3... yes It can have better graphics..
but has yet to be proven....Most games run better on the 360 as of now ( gamespot did a comparison)
Xbox has very good games out right now ... PS3 has a few, not enough... and a few down the round ( 09 looks like a bad year for games) yes 5 years from now maybe.. I want to play games now...
not wait years down the road

Blu-ray won... great.. but its slow to be adopted... How long till blu-ray is out and the next big thing is in.
The movies are still to pricey..
Buddy has all three gaming consoles. and the PS3 gets very little use.
Maybe in 2-3 years the PS3 will be up top.. maybe... but the Xbox has been pulling farther and father away every month...
Don't get me wrong the PS3 is a great system...
I do plan to buy one..
When the price is lower
there is a few more good PS3 only games
and Blu-ray movies are cheaper

High price of system and movies
lack of games
poor online
are hurting their chance to make it.
Sony needs to drop the price or everyone the wants a gaming console will own a Wii and/Or Xbox
there will be no need for any console sit under there TV...

this article is about price cuts, not xbox vs. ps3. jeeeeeez.

Its about time they lower PS3's price. They should go to 250$ right of the rip. That would cause massive sales and get the PS3 back in the game. Might be to late though.

I'm hoping that there will be a price drop soon so I can pickup a PS3 but if the price doesn't drop, then forget it, I'll save myself some money =P

PEOPLE! this isn't an article about XBOX vs. PS3!
Talk about price cuts, not which is better!

Thank you.

I really think/hope PS3 will announce a price cut March 23rd at the Game Developers Conference. If they do, ill will be the first to buy one.

with all these rumours spreading around, the people that are actually interested in buying a ps3 with most definitely wait until they see if there is an actual price drop around april.

i know i will.

sony is probably losing even more because of all these rumours and because people are holding out.

*sigh*$300 seems like Sony needs the price cut. If mag lives up to it's promise and beyond I will laugh at every Ps3 fanboy. I personally don't have a Xbox360 and don't want to sound like a fanboy(even if I kinds am lol) I truthfullybwould only buy xbox for the halo and gears series. Yes you guys pay less yes you guys have more games butvright now quality is better than quatity.

You'll probably say where is this quality most games don't live up to the hype well that's beacause the hype is so built up the game doesn't seem as good. Look at Resistance 2 it's an awesome game but due to the hype it doesn't seem to live up to it's potential hype is usually misleading, a lot of xbox fanboys said rooms would b empty due to 60 ppl in a game.... Rooms are usually filled. Yes a lot more ppl have xbox which makes non exclusive ps3 games online seem like a better experience but really now most of us just want the room to be filled and not be filled with little kids like in halo 3( LOL I'm serious kids invade that game.) Anyway I pray that the extremly ambitious MAG pulls it off and that GOW3 will show the raw power of the PS3 (it's proven that ps3 has more power)
