This would be sweet. Having both consoles already it would be great if the PS3 were to drop in price allowing friends/family to connect online there too. This price drop is long overdue though - if it had come in last November it would have resulted in huge sales of the PS3 at Christmas.

Which is better? Who cares - both are great consoles and each have their own strong points.

$299 is a very good price for a gaming system + dvd/blu ray player. I think the biggest problem right now is that @ $399 for the 80gb version ($499 for 160 gb) and a down economy the average consumer would opt for the cheaper $199 xbox 360 that can play dvd's and streaming movies from netflix. That's just economics.

Haha... Price cut? Sony Singapore just up their Playstation 3 (80GB) product from SGD$599 to SGD$629. If it is true, that will be great.

PS3 to me is a Superior piece of hardware compared to the Xbox 360. You can load a Linux operation system on it by simple going to the load OS setting in the menu. You can also swap the hard drive out with any SATA 2.5" hard drive. Free online play, you can buy and rent movies from the PS store. Looks like a high end piece of equipment(How many high end TV's come in white). Combine a compact wireless keyboard and you can surf the web from the couch. The ability to use any bluetooth headsets. Not saying the Xbox is not a great game system, but i don't think it provides as much on the entertainment side of things. Although xbox does have netflix(i so wish i had that). I feel that the PS3 will be around as a viable system well after xbox 360 gets tossed into the closet.

The price break is great...but I still won't get one since they took away backwards compatibility. There aren't enough intriguing games available still.

I paid $600 for my ps3 when it launched. I don't regret it, the hardware is fantastic. The BR playback is top notch and has been used quite a bit. I have a great lineup with Little Big Planet, Resistance, Resistance 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, etc. The ps3 is a great system and worth the money. I also jacked my ps3 to 320 gigs for $80. I also own a 360 and a Wii. Honestly the Wii is a good party machine, nothing more. In terms of just games the 360 has a slight edge over the ps3, however the hardware is shoddy. Given the vast majority of top tier games are multiplatform there is little reason to own a ps3 and 360. For 360 owners I would buy a stand alone BR over a ps3 because of price. For those who don't own a 360, buy a ps3 over the 360 because it is far better hardware at a much better price for what you get (wireless, large HD, BR, etc). Wii only owners, get a real gaming machine.

I'm in on this because my primary usage will be for media streaming and blu-ray in one, quiet box. I have an A/V receiver and LCD TV with limited HDMI and don't want the clutter in any case. Gaming is secondary, but I do enjoy it.

I hedged my bets in December by signing up for the Sony credit card which, with a $150 credit, would net me a PS3 for $250. I haven't done that yet, however, hoping that a price drop might be in the offing. Since this deal expires March 7, 2009 (i.e., I have to actually use the card to buy the PS3 by March 7), I'll have to make a decision by then. I suppose Sony's smart enough to prevent folks like me from gaining from the price drop, resulting in a PS3 for $150... Until then, I'm still using my old DVD player and playing games on my PC.

Look you guys...I've had a PS3 now for more than a year! Blu-Ray is great and the games are only getting better! I recently purchased another Samsung LCD for my kids and when I needed a blu-ray player for that TV you know what I bought...........a PS3!!!! In hindsight, I wish I could've waited till April and paid $300 instead of $400! Yes...Panny,Sony and samsung have blu ray players 100-150 dollars cheaper but read the reviews and all of them have one fault or another! With the PS3, you get aruguably the best blu ray player in the market, a mutlimedia storage interface with the ability to downlaod movies, music and archive pictures and such. A system that is constantly being updated with firmware upgrades and an awesome gaming system for the fringe or die-hard gamer! Did I mention NO 3 RINGS OF DEATH!!!! Unless you're a HALO junkie(I'm NOT) there are VERY few games with exclusivity for the XBOX 360 (Only game I would personally love to play is Left 4 Dead). For me...PS3 is STILL the way to go!

In California, i heard on the news. That if the state can not fix their budget. Then everyone will be getting IOU for tax refunds and it may take a few months for everyone Unless our reps in CA can fix their mess. So I do not think buying PS3 during april may not be a wise choice for many californians. For now anyway unless they can get us our money.

The 360 and Wii sll more becuase of the lower price. But we all know that the PS3 has a higher quality. But pricing beats all. Remember 50% over people who play video games are under the age of 17 and the other 50% are people over the age of 17. Now it's easier for Bob to get the PS3 becuase he has a job and can pay for it. But Liitle Jimmy has to ask his parents to get hime a PS3. Pricing matters for the parents. And untill that price does drop down to $300, they will sell a lot more. $100 is a BIG difference now in days.

"But we all know that the PS3 has a higher quality"

According to who? Quality is in the eye of the gamer.

At $300 is starts to become a viable purchase for some. But for the economy we are in it's still a tough sell. Especially when the titles are at $60 unless you find bargains on lesser titles. Money is a big factor here. We're not here to compare systems but discuss weather it's worth the cost.

With the fact that's it's still an incredible blueray player upgradable, downloads movies and tv shows which in today's era is becoming more popular (sorry blu-ray fans). Plays great games it's a definate buy in you got the cash and can swallow the cost for the game titles.

I bought a 40GB PS3 for $400 primarily as a BluRay player.... because it is the best player out there compared to other standalones that cost the same price. Now that standalones are getting cheaper, it's good to see that PS3 is also getting cheaper comparatively.

That being said, i was also hoping to play some games on it, but so far I've been sticking to my XBox360 for gaming. The online play and more extensive library (shared and exclusives) can't be beat.

The bottom line is that the average person doesn't care about blu-ray - there's a pretty narrow demographic (middle/upper middle class males, ages 18-40, who are technologically savvy?) who care/can afford to spend $30 on "Iron Man". I own a 360, and like it a lot, but I won't be buying a PS3 until either 1) the price drops another $100 or 2) the prices of blu-rays go WAYYY down.

I have owned my PS3 for a year now and I have never spent $30 on a movie. Shop online and you will find Blu-ray movies for less than $25 on release day. Take in consideration that these always have all of the features of the special edition DVD or 2 & 3 disc versions and often have digital copies included. Most of my Blu-rays have been purchased for less than $20, which is what new release dvds usually cost at a brick and mortor retailer.

A price cut would be nice but IMO it's too little, too late. Sony is such a whole for the PS3 for pricing it too high, then taking out the backward compatibility I don't see them coming from the basement at all. They will remain the 3rd for now on.

I'll replace my PS2 with a PS3 in the exact moment Sony markets an affordable version that has backwards compatibility with my children's PS2 and original PS games. They actually got it right with the 60GB unit, then promptly stopped manufacturing it for the sole purpose of bolstering sales of PS3 games. Now it costs a totally unreasonable amount to buy the only version of the PS3 that was worth a damn. Sony, are you out there, can you hear me? Guaranteed sale here if you put backwards compatibility back into all PS3s!

The 80 GB PS3s (Motorstorm pakage) also had backwards compatibility. I will play my old games now and then on my system, but mostly my old games just sit around and collect dust. I assume you still have your old PS2. Just use that. I thought I would still want to play my old games but when I started buying new PS3 games, I just didn't have the time or desire to pick them up anymore.
