Two reports follow the trail of the work Dell supposedly is up to as it seeks to tap into the success of the MacBook Air.

Just curious, once this product, if ever, is released, will Dell offer the extra $99 Support Option so you have an average 2 minute wait time and not have to speak to someone with a foreign accent'?

By the way, still waiting on the home media/music/phone/gadget/whatever announcement.

Thank You.

The "success of Apple's MacBook Air"? I thought the general sentiment was that it was a failure.

Never mind this biased editors. We all know that the air is not doing well, and it lacks alot compared with what samsung have. The pc is always ahead.

Wapple will learn alot from adamo...

I'm with you. The Air seems to have been kind of a flop, I'm not sure why a company would insist on repeating the mistakes (unless they honestly think they can fix it). The Apple marketing team must be REALLY well, they've got other companies copying their mistakes. :)

Apple notebook sales are doing extremely well. I suspect the Air is a flop only in your mind.

Adamo? A latin version of Adam? Adam and Eve?

So the posers are coming out with something new...a super thin laptop. Oh...if only the marketplace wanted one. How about focusing on a Dell that's made well, looks cool, and is well supported. These super thin, super small devices are just novelties and server a SUPER limited audience.

New superslim unibody servers ftw. Less than an inch thick and only a few compromises. Like who really needs server grade hardware in a server. And the curved style not only makes it look nicer it also make it harder to stack.

Just curious, does anyone know how many Apple actually sold of the AIR? Just for the sake of argument, I wonder if it cost more for the R&D plus parts than they made in profit? Either way, another stupid "be like Apple" me-two product by Dell that the community is laughing at today.

Besides, the XPS 1330 is pretty sweet, they should just tweak the heck out of that one.

In my opinion.

They can't be that bad, or Dell wouldn't feel the need to produce a competing product.

I believe the Air flopped b/c it made too many compromises and was WAY too expensive... Super thin OR small has it's place (e.g. the Mini9, and other netbooks). I suspect the Adamo will not make the compromises (at least not as many) the Air did... and I'll bet it's much less expensive. I'm optimistic.

Thin and light or full-featured and low-cost. Pick one.
by dennisl59 December 22, 2008 9:24 AM PST
OK, with all the spies, insiders, and backchannel contacts, I've yet to see a post stating how many of the MAC AIR's have been actually sold and has Apple made a profit or is it just a "loss leader" in the 1st place?

Thank You.

Well I do think the MacBook Air is a failure just as other people say the compromises. I know it's thin and blah blah blah, but really, it's not that expensive to produce it. There's no need to charge a premium for something that has 3 ports. I think the price of the Air should be around the MacBook's price for it to be competitive. The 1.6GHz needs to be like $1299 and the 1.86GHz needs to be $1599. Otherwise, the MacBook Air will be the next Cube and will be an expensive collectors item.

Anyways if Dell does produce a superthin laptop, I hope they put in more ports, maybe an optical drive and price it very fairly.

I have to humbly disagree. My Air has been going 1 year strong: I have only used the external DVD-R twice in these last 12 months. If I have a laptop, I don't need a mouse: that's what the trackpad is for, especially with gestures. It's light for when I go on vacation. The only time I attach something to it is a thumbdrive. I never plug in my headphones because that's what an iPod was invented. Sure, the processor is not very speedy, and neither are the graphics, but I use my Air as a Netbook, so I don't need the power, and Mac OS X is a much more refined system than Ubuntu, and lightyears ahead of Crapdows Vista. The list just goes on and on: if you need the power, get a Macbook Pro, quit whining! You get what you pay for.
by redsox2003 December 23, 2008 5:57 PM PST
I wasn't talking about the MacBook Air being underpowered or Vista being crap and Ubuntu not being refined. I was never whining, so get your facts straight. I just wished the MBA was a little bit cheaper to be more competitive. That's it. I understand you use it as a Netbook, that's good for you I guess.
by FruitSpikeAndMoon December 24, 2008 2:41 AM PST
If the Air is a to be treated as a netbook, then it costs 3-5x what it should for that functionality. The Air is the embodiment of all that drives people crazy about Apple computers: it leaves out many industry-standard features and costs greater than twice the price of a similarly stocked PC.

I would be amazed if the Air is a significant success, because in its current form it is nothing but a luxury toy that most people cannot afford. Seriously, this thing is generally billed as a "second laptop" - how many people actually NEED to use two different laptops? Most people are better served by single laptop for everything or a laptop for mobility alongside a desktop for power. In any case, for the price of an Air, I can buy a high-end ultra-portable PC with more power and all the ports that it should have - which wouldn't be confined to use as a Netbook.

On an article in the New York Times website, the author has stated that they have found an advertisement of Adamo, thus confirming the forthcoming of Adamo.
