Awesome news. I have been holding off on upgrading to HD with Directv for this. I have tried several other brands of DVRs and I keep returning to Tivo. Even when my choice was a free DVR or an expensive Tivo, I went with the Tivo. A friend of mine is buying a new HDTV and asked for my recommendation on Dish Network versus Directv. Other than a few channels here or there and Dish being less expensive, the most compelling reason I could think of was what type of DVR they offered. Right now, my argument is weak but when this new Tivo comes out, then I can strongly recommend DirecTV.

My wish list for the new Tivo:
- Keep the Ethernet port standard. if they want to add wireless or usb, fine. But please keep the Ethernet port
- Classic interface preferred. If they can make any improvements, fine but please don't change it just because DirecTV thinks it would be cool. The classic Tivo interface works
- Add/improve universal remote features for the tivo remote. The Tivo remote is awesome. I would prefer to put the other remotes in the drawer and just use the Tivo remote. Provide the option of assigning controls to individual devices instead of in groups. For example, with my current Tivo remote I can either choose to control my Sony TV or my Sony reciever (STR-DE695) but not both. The entire control group can only be assigned to one remote code. So either I can turn the tv on or off or I can adjust its volume, not both. It would be nice to be able to split these functions. Would be nice to have a few buttons I can assign to whatever I want (within reason) like headphone on/off (my TV has a headphone button that mutes the speakers and turns on the wireless headphones), cc, surround modes on the receiver, etc.
- Amazon unbox is nice but Netflix is even better. The spec for their interface is now easily available
- Don't skimp on the processor. It may run fast today but what happens after a few software upgrades?

Again, great news!

i love my directvTIVO! i do not like the directv DVRs. I can't wait until the HD directvTIVO version comes out. i have 4 directv receivers in my house (1 HD, 2 DVRs, and 1 directvTIVO). i can't wait to kick the first three receivers to the curb!

Like I care if I have the "bloop" sound and that Tivo guy with the antennas? The HR-2X DVRs work fine. Tivo can go jump in the lake... they cut themselves out, and life goes on without them.

Tivo = ads I don't want, a non-functional remote, and a backwards company that thinks people crave the decade-old technology that they continually refuse to advance. No thanks. Suck it, Tivo.

There's nothing like a Tivo - this is terrific news. I have five of these HR20 lemons and I cannot wait until this nightmare is over.

This is the best news I've gotten in a long time. I just got the new DirecTv dvr after much pressure. It is terrible. Tivo is just a better product, even without upgrades.

I briefly "upgraded' to DirecTV's generic DVR and hated it. The Tivo software is far superior in terms of usability and ease of use. I sent the generic DVR back and hooked up my old DirecTV Tivo (yes I still have one.) Personally, I can't WAIT until the new Tivo is out. Yay!

I like my HR21 - yah its slow and so am I - but its made many improvements since I got it. One of the nices thing is I can pick it up and take it with me to my vacation home. And it doesn't cost me a cent. Will I like the Tivo better I'm sure. I like the old ones so much I use them for door stops. Ones a (Tivo)Pioneer DVR-810h. Dick

I'm a little late in this discussion, but.... TIVO's Software is FAR Superior to DIRECTV''s. But, I've NEVER been a big fan of paying the monthly service fee to TIVO. What I would Rather see, is DIRECTV steal TIVO's programmer, and have him/her write better software for DIRECTV, 'cause the current DIRECTV user interface just plain SUCKS. - (sorry if that sounds like a personal attack on DIRECTV's current team of programmers)

Tick tock, when are we going to get a date - can't wait?!! Have been a Tivo fan for about 10 years and would rather get non-HD signal Tivo that I have and rabbit ears HD than sign up for a second rate HD DVR. HURRY!!!

I am a loyal Tivo user and still have my old 80 hour box, but it is still better then then newest directv box. My question is what is the latest on a release date, I called directv and they had no information about it.

Does anyone know?

My TIVO DVR was hit by a lightning storm and I had to go with the DirecTV DVR and it stinks. There are too many buttons and it not-user friendly.

The Directv HR** series of HD receivers are absolute garbage. Landfill. No slo-mo, incredibly slow response to inputs, just awful POS. When's this new Tivo box gonna hit???

I've heard no news about a DirecTV TiVo, and my old HR-250 really needs an update. How about it TiVo? DirecTV?

I sure hope this comes to pass. My old TiVo just lost its power supply and I got the DirecTV DVR, which is really awful. I especially miss being able to switch between the two tuners and having them both record the prior 30 minutes, so I can go from one ballgame to another and not miss a play. I just got an HD TV and would like to take advantage of it, but have been thinking about switching from DirecTV unless they got back into the TiVo business. Maybe this will do the trick.

Well, here we are in the 2nd half of 2009, and there has not been A WORD of this from TiVo.

GREAT way to hype the company, John P. Falcone! Next time, let them BUY ads from Buzz Out Loud!

several months ago when i called directv for help yet again with the piece of garbage dvr that replaced my beloved Tivo box, the technician told me that anew TiVo would be out in fall of 2009. According to the TiVo website, the launch date is now 2010, but no specific month is mentioned. here's the link:

http://www.tivo.com/mytivo/directv-signup.html

and you have the option to sign up for email updates on progress. i'm sure there will be much spam and few updates, but i'll gladly sort thru them for the heads up on when i can call directv and order my new TiVo box!

What is the holdup with getting these TIVO Directv units in service. I won't use the crap HD DVRs from Directv. I guess they will force me to switch to DISH...ARGHHHH

I've been a DTV customer since 1998, had the TiVo DVRs, and had the HD TiVo too. I loved it and couldn't let go of it until DTV forced me to leave it behind. At first I didn't like the new DTV DVRs but I've become used to them, and after many of their updates I've come to like them. The only feature that will get me to leave the DTV DVRs behind is the ability to stream recorded shows from one DVR to another.
