My crummy Nokia 6131 also reboots when it feels like it. So unreliability is not reserved for Apple.

I guess when phones became computers, with operating systems and application software, it was the beginning of this becoming the norm on most phones.

Key several of my Palm handhelds also crash without warning.

The bad thing is Apple dodging responsibility for anything.

I just recently updated to the 2.0.2 firmware. I kept getting the same problem with the iTunes startup screen and having that annoying unknown error.
Finally after about an hour of messing with it and restoring it back to factory settings it took the update and I see no difference in 3G signal strength. Lame.

I purchased my new 3G iPhone outside the U.S. Shortly after using it for no more than 5 minutes the phone just shut off by itself. I tried turning it on with no luck. All I got was a black background and the white apple logo. I tried many times getting it to boot and finally decided to hook it up to itunes. I went through the recovery process and when it finished downloading the latest firmware (2.0.2) it gave me an error stating that it couldn't connect to the server. I tried this at least 6 times and got the same result!!! I took the iPhone back to get this looked at. The company here didn't know what to do and told me that they couldn't help me because the iPhone comes with no Guarantee and that I had to deal with Apple directly.... I was like What??? That cant be!!!!

Well anyways, long story short, I finally got the phone replaced and this one is now working. Replacing the iPhone here was HELL!!!!!

I strongly suggest to NOT update your iPhone if it's working properly. There is definitely a glitch with itunes. I read in a couple of forums and posts that apple is launching itunes 8 shortly. I hope this fixes these issues. Apple, I'm very disappointed in your product!!! What gives!!!

I really appreciate all your comments. I have recently purchased an iphone 3g and soon after got the 'white screen of death'. I discussed the situation with Apple and received another phone. Well guess what, another white screen of death. I am completely disappointed with yet getting another dud phone. Come on Apple......take some responsibility. I am definitely reconsidering buying anything Apple again.

I'm from the UK, and experienced the dreaded white screen of death but the advice on the Apple website worked for me -

Reset

To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds. During this time, a red "power off" slider may appear and the screen may go black, but do not release Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears.
