The state is pretty much bankrupt...but hey, you gotta have wi-fi bus shelters right? I can see how that would be a necessity for tax dollars.

You do know the difference between a city and a state, correct? AFIK there are no 'state' bus shelters.

You'll notice that the article is talking about San Francisco. Just because the state is running a deficit doesn't mean the city it. The city is paying for these bus shelters, not the state.

San Francisco is symptomatic of CA as a whole.

"San Francisco's budget deficit could reach nearly $750 million in 2011 assuming the city faces a slow climb out of recession and maintains current levels of public services and civil employees, according to a report released Tuesday."

The LED lighting is good. The solar panels are greenwashing. They don't generate enough power to prevent having to drop a cable from the grid to the shelter, which means they'll never save enough energy to be cost-effective. Better to spend the money on green generation and a more efficient grid.

bus shelters in San Jose are 100% efficient - they dont use ANY energy. Some one take the credit card away from Newsom!

"San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) have unveiled new energy-efficient bus shelters for the city."

I didn't realize bus shelters used any power ;-)

looking at the San Francisco's new solar bus shelters it looks like a joke with the wavy red top compare to the one from italy and it would be nice if they lit up at night and the glass had uv ray auto-tinting

Mayor Gavin Newsom,

UGH, can San Francisco use a more pleasing bus shelter design? Those proposed for SFO t looks like an aluminum shack straight out of Bangladesh!

Please please see the designs for Florence Italy! Wake up people!

I wonder how those are going to look with gang tags scratched into the glass.
As it is- that wavy red roof is a hideous, rain-gathering mess. Look forward to all the short circuiting roofs caused by water collecting and sitting over those solar panels.
