Comments on: The worst video YouTube has ever seen?

In a commercial for the Red House furniture store in High Point, N.C., you will hear lines such as "Look at this sofa. It's perfect for a black person. Or a white person." Really.

Well considering they have a site I believe its legit.

From a marketing standpoint, it was a total success. How much did it cost to make? How many people watched it? How many of those are now aware that the Red House sells furniture?

Stupid, it may be... but we all watched it.

That video was pretty strange, but not anywhere close to being "the worst". Ya wanna see something really bad? Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHpw6CzprNY&feature=related

Awful attempt at humour.

This makes Charlie the Unicorn look like a Martin Scorsese. You should watch the "Salad Fingers" videos some time. I have to say I was left speechless by this. I wonder if it ever got any air time on an actual tv station.

What's wrong with charlie the unicorn?

"And Hispanic people too!"

I can understand the crappy acting by guys who aren't actors - but what was with the mannequin-like handshakes (that my GI Joe's used to do after a long hard day of kicking the crap out of each other), and the sideways singing?

Hammerhand

You're a comic genius, and how hard would it have been to place adjustable fingers on Joe?

In a weird sort of way, I kinda like this -- if advertisers are getting less inclined to tiptoe around racial differences and pretend they don't exist, that might mean that society is gradually getting more so-what about those differences. That's not a bad thing, IMHO.

(In the same general category, it's likewise not a bad thing that black actors are increasingly hired to play not just good guys but bad guys too.)

I am so tired of ethnically incorrect people playing the wrong parts on film or TV.

I am tired of seeing jewish people playing the part off an Irish,Scottish person.
I am tired of seeing Chinese playing Japanese roles.
I am tired of lots of things that are so incorrect.
Hollywood is so lazy getting the right people.

hey guys this was not a joke. it is a fun ad that Rhett and Link of www.rhettandlink.com made for the store. It is supposed to be humorous. Here is a link to the post on their site with their interview on CNN. http://rhettandlink.com/blog/2009/05/11/434 Rhett explains the situation and, as the clip implies, we all need to grow up and have some fun.

I live in the TV market that serves High Point, and I've never seen this (or any other ad for this place).

There's humorous, and there's offensive. I think this pushes towards the latter. Why take such an approach? And was this actually used and put on the air? I can think of worse things to possibly do for such a commercial, but I don't want to give anyone ideas.

You'd have to live in the area. Racism is not dead in the south. Some morons haven't realized the civil war ended almost 200 years ago.
by NorthCarolina12 May 13, 2009 4:44 PM PDT
How would this possibly be offensive? And to who?
by cincytee May 14, 2009 11:07 PM PDT
As a white relative northerner, I have felt discomfort with excessive deference from southern blacks when I visited there. Made it obvious to me that the South has not been entirely rehabilitated from segregation. With that perspective, I appreciate the store's effort to say that the only color that matters to them is green. It's the implementation (love the GI Joe handshake description) that makes us wince. (Makes it look forced an disingenuous.)
by jture May 16, 2009 2:14 PM PDT
Um, Chief.CrazyBear, check your math ... the Civil War ended 144 years ago, quite a bit short of "almost 200 years."

The acting was superbly done to make one think ,is anyone really that dry. The singing surprisingly almost on key. Makes you want to go see the place if just to make the employees happy someone came in.

I don't see what's so bad about trying to end racism with furniture.

"Hi. I'm a Mac"

"And I'm a PC."

to be honest, i think a commercial which shows pc users and mac users sharing a handshake and getting along would be more offensive than this. and considering their latest commercial efforts, it probably wouldn't be half as enjoyable to watch.

I hate to say it, I live in Upper SC, have been to High Point NC, and knowing the area, that commercial would actually be considered "high production costs". In all honesty I have seen much worse local commercials than that one.

this was supposed to be a funny ad, its not a joke, i live like three minutes down the street from this place, they hired the guys that are singing in the video to make a low budget commercial for them, and unfortunately it turned out like crap
