I am sorry to burst the bubble.
the Science fiction that people read on comic books is not the same as Science.
This article portrays all of the demeaning stereotypes that make the rest of the world -think- that americans are stupid illiterates. Which is totally unfair because we don't elect people like you to represent american thought.
No one "checked this people" when the US detonated the first atom bombs.
so?

Why is it that you reply to a opinion article? No one cares that you disagree with the author. You guys think you have the whole universe figured out. Human beings are too stupid to find out the secrets of the universe. Never in a billion years will we be able to tele-transport, go back in time, or make fellow human beings like you - emittman - have a single shred of humbleness. You are so full of yourself that no one can ever teach you anything. The will only believe the opinions of scientists and other likewise minded individuals who put on the front of knowing absolutely everything. Of course scientists always claim "know" what they are doing. They're full of themselves just like you.

Hatefully yours,

alleywayzalwayz

I dare a reply.

Dare excepted.

Read you're own comment and envy at your brilliance much do you?
Try to go to school and take a physics class for the love of god. Once you do that, you're opinions will carry more weight. However as I've learned, people who "educate" themselves on a particular subject are truly hard pressed to keep the same opinions they once held at the beginning of that journey. So I implore you to take that journey, and see what's got the rest of us "geeks" so excited.

Thank you.

I can already tele transport, only problem is that I'm invisible so on-one can see me

You and those like you in power are responsible of killing the SuperconductingSupercollider in the US. We used to be the leaders in high energy physics. Kudos for the Europeans.

I can't take credit for this comment that I read on another blog but in it's awesomeness I will pass it along. "Don't worry, the project is being headed by Gordon Freeman".
Okay, so I play too many video games, I know.

We need to stop something - all the ignorant people pretending to be award-winning this or that and publishing absolute nonsense. You, my sire, have done absolutely no research into the matter and yet you blog/write with your mouth open. CNET is also to blame in its quest for sensational articles, page views and other BS. No friggin information here. Ridiculous.

Ok... so a few points.
ONE: Black hole? Note the fact that these are sub atomic particles and it is physically impossible for them to obtain so much mass that they collapse into themselves and create an enormous dent in the space time fabric that even light could not escape. Aside from that, gravity is such a weak force to begin with. Oh, and the period in this sentence contains trillions upon trillions of atoms.
TWO: Rap video. Anyone can make a video, so what? they were bored and wanted to have fun while doing something work related. Stupid point.
THREE: Anti-matter. It is pretty unlikely that they will find antimatter, and if we do, it could potentially be harnessed for great things.
FOUR: Writing. This is crap writing. Its far too opinionated, and you never ACTUALLY back up your argument, except with making fun of the Palin family, referencing a beautiful mind, and a potential olympics. Gee wiz.
Finally, if you would like to be ignorant and not understand what you are and where you came from, fine. But please understand that the science LHC is what will driving us further into the Twenty First century, and will help us understand so many things about the universe. We are too advanced to claim ignorance, but far too small to claim understanding. So instead of complaining about things you don;t understand, do some research and actually contribute to the world.

I doubt that anyone writing or commenting on this or any other story has spent the energy to unearth what could be considered substance. Everything is an opinion on either side and this article along with most others is simply a continuation of unfounded entertainment for the lazy and uneducated. Probably no one who has read about this, me included, could understand the underlying theoretical constructs...including most of those involved in the process. Just enjoy the ride, we've got no idea what powers the transportation.

Hey, do you think they'll sell some of those things in something I could hang on a necklace? Why not? Hey, its not any more stupid than what I just read.

They have been in the planning, design and construction of the Large Hadron Collider for the last two decades. Have you been complaining about this for that long and still not learned anything? If I were you you, I would sue my doctor.

First of all, who the hell in their right minds at CNET hired this jackass? By the way I don't cuss, usually ever. I do have very little patience when it comes to public outcries of the idiotic.

But in response to this particular writer, lets have it. What grounds say you do you have a leg to stand on to make such an assumption? The same leg that those throughout human history have had when they amassed a mob and burned the building with which the scientist has with the experiments we don't understand? The same philosophy that has kept us in the dark ages for nearly eight hundred years?

CNET is a source of information about technology to the masses and you let this tw*t write an article screaming out some inane scheme? By the way you jack-hole.. the rap video was made by someone else and you're spreading lies. Grounds for a lawsuit for defamation if I ever saw one.

The Truth of the Hadron Colider is this.. it is an experiment to replicate the same things that happen everyday except under a controlled environment with really expensive equipment to detect it when it happens so we may understand our universe more thoroughly.

Thousands of times a day, collisions much like this happen on Earth, in our Atmosphere, and even inside of you. Though you're still here to keep up with the drivel and nonsense of fear-mongery populated by psuedo-science fanatics who fear that every turn we take as a species is our end. However for the very last time, it isn't. Each turn in our understanding of existence has been met with harsh resistance by the same volleys of fanatical stupidity and arrogance as it has been for the past two thousand years.

People feared the steam engine for it was a devilish device that transported us faster then thirty miles per hour. The same with the combustion engine, fearing that if we accelerated past the point of 60mph and our faces were exposed to the winds our skin would surely peel off. The same people who opposed (and sadly still do) the creation of the computer for it is a modern marvel who must ultimately bring us doom.

Really now? CNET Management, fire this fool of a writer who has no place writing for what I thought was a destination for knowledge of technological news and events. Sadly I am disappointed.

whoosh!

not a very bright bunch of commentators are they pmgeer?

anyway, its all safe, a lady here has volunteered her butt to block the black hole. it'll be fine.
Just one question, why are the scientists actually controlling this from the ISS?

and a final fun thought - are we Schrodinger's cat just waiting for the lid of the box to be opened?

"are we Schrodinger's cat just waiting for the lid of the box to be opened?"

Nice... it begs the question, "If we're the cat then who's running the experiment?"

If it wasn't for science, the ill-informed Chris Matyszczyk would not be able to rant illogically on this web site. Think about it, if you can.

"Why the Large Hadron Collider must be stopped: Because I haven't done any research on the subject, and would much rather gush anti-progress agitprop over teh internetz to make this complex and intricate situation conform to my simple-minded view on things".

To the author: If you really think that this project is in some way more frightening than the hydrogen bomb, you should refrain from commenting on ANY stories concerning nuclear physics. Particle physics is in general very well understood, but clearly not by you.

Wow. Folks, you need to relax. He may be making an underlying statement that we should all look very closely at who is at the helm of some of our most interesting and risky experiments (goofy 25 year old nerds who may not have all the answers) but this article is obviously taking it to the funny side of the moon.

I appreciate all the incredible logical and scientifically accurate responses to this story; great knowledge, thanks for sharing, but I would suggest the efforts be spent directly on the sites that really do have people claiming that this will cause the end of days! Go tell Rossler why he's wrong and fight with some creationists who think this will reverse the flow of time. Laugh at this article and the idea that Russell Crowe not winning an award is even remotely relevant to this incredible scientific effort.

This was a funny story and somehow it made it to the top of Google News for this story; that's the real story here. The Google News algorithm got tricked into believing that trustworthy CNET had a real story on the experiment to put at the top of their page! Google got pranked just as much as the readers!
