Comments on: Zune struggles to find the right pitch

After grabbing several points of market share in its first year on the market, Microsoft's player hasn't been able to make much of a dent in Apple's market, even after adding a flash memory-based model.

Archos 605 is WAY better than ZUNE or APPLE.

I'm sorry, but the Zune is far behind the iPod. Does the Zune have a multi-touch interface or full desktop-class web browser or full 3rd party app support, or a huge 480x320 screen, or an enormous accessories market or movie purchase and rental as well as TV shows, or audible books, or games, or the option of a medol with a full 2.5G cell phone built-in etc etc.

No the Zune is Microsoft's attempt at copying Apple's iPod, but Apple moved the goal posts far in advance of where the Zune is now at. The iPod Touch now has 32GB of storage - HDD-based MP3 players are definitely passe now.

Some of these comments seem to be coming straight out of internal or for hire marketing people. When I start seeing comments such as "zun r0xr way cool lol" I'll know Zune is gaining traction in the real marketplace ;)

Is it horrible to feel bad for Microsoft? Because really I have a Zune (first gen. 30GB) and I love the thing. I have had Sandisk (which I still use), I've tried iRiver which was okay, but overall the Zune has not really given me any worries except for one of the software updates in the beginning that ate the first song of several of my albums. I've never wanted an iPod because it doesn't have what I want. All I wanted in a mp3 player is decent storage, and a radio. Ipod has never jumped on the radio bit at all. Both my Sandisk and Zune lets you upload video if you want... on the Sandisk it's too tiny to watch but on the Zune, not bad. But I don't understand why anyone would want to load say a movie or whatnot on such a small device (that includes you Apple). But it's funny though. My sister made fun of me and my zune, because she's an iRiver fan, but this year she bought herself a zune and she's loving it too. So maybe for Microsoft it's going to be one of those grassroots one zune at a time campaign. As long as they don't call themselves "Ipod Killers" they should be fine.

I can't imagine any company in their right mind signing up to make 3rd party Zune products, after what MS did with Plays For Sure; Urge; and most recently MSN Music.

Of all the mp3 units out there, the Sansdisk models are the most desirable to me. They are inexpensive, but still have a rich feature set and high quality parts. http://www.custompcmax.com

A turd by any other color, is still a turd.

Marketing won't change that

Boy that is exactly right. I really had no loyalty to ipod, Zune or any other player having an ancient Dell DJ. The Zune software is frankly beyond terrible. I've seen all the falme wars between ipod users and Zune users but honestly I wanted to love the Zune but ended up taking it back and buying an ipod. My music library migrated flawlessly to itune whereas the Zune software completly jumbled my entire collection. It's no wonder Zune sales are microscopic to other players.
