Ya right. How is it 'good'?

gmail has had its own availability issues. Over and over again.

At least MS doesn't hide behind the 'it a beta' BS.

Cascaded failure?
by j_a_s_p_e_r February 26, 2008 6:19 PM PST
Often single points of heavy load can lead to cascaded, pervasive failures. The only way to prevent these is the use of fire breaks, which can be complex to configure in distributed systems. IMHO The amazon storage failure recently was another case of cascaded load failure.

Do you think?
by n3td3v February 26, 2008 6:55 PM PST
Do you think Microsoft will rip out all of Yahoo's FreeBSD servers and throw in Windows Server 2008?

Scary thought... might.happen.though.

by luvfilpus February 26, 2008 9:32 PM PST
Does anyone REALLY want to see yahoo go to windows? Does anyone REALLY think that M$ will keep yahoo on *BSD? Ya.. Right.. It will be a billion users unable to login if they get yahoo!

It was still working periodically this morning for me when the first reports of trouble surfaced. But as of 7 or 8 hours ago I'm still unable to connect to Hotmail using the web or HTTP service in Outlook...

Why didn't they tell us yesterday?
by stony225 February 27, 2008 3:26 AM PST
It seems odd that MSN didn't post a message yesterday saying that they had a problem. It sure would have saved a lot of frustration for those of us who were struggling to log in.

Still Not working
by pickmaster February 27, 2008 6:12 AM PST
Received the Login screen, but cannot login...after doing login it goes to page not found. In US, having issues...not over seas. I would like to also know the root cause as we use Microsoft Products in our business.

"unexpected event" ?
by chazzsubscribe February 27, 2008 8:46 AM PST
Microsoft: "This issue appears to have been related to an unexpected event which caused device overload and failure."

Hmmm... would that "unexpected event" be people trying to log in and use their e-mail accounts? :)

Of course it has to do with Windows servers -- Hotmail frequently has problems --- and it's always their servers. Years ago before Microsoft bought them, Hotmail used UNIX servers. Even after the ownership change, Hotmail continued to use UNIX servers for a while longer. But Microsoft changed Hotmail over to Windows servers because people started asking too many embarrassing questions. Ever since they constantly have outages.

OfficeLive not fixed -- from a victim
by OpenEagle February 27, 2008 3:21 PM PST
Microsoft Office Live problems are not resolved -- take it from a victim who lost his website (still can't access it) and can't get a response from Microsoft -- the Help service just send you to "online form hell." After a day of utter frustration, I can't get any helf from MS -- btw, there is no telephone customer service when online help fails -- Screeeeeech!!!

Finally a response -- but all email lost, at least temporarily
by grantdavis February 28, 2008 5:18 PM PST
Dear Hotmail Customer:

First, let us apologize for any difficulties you may have experienced accessing your inbox over the last few days. We experienced an unexpected service outage and worked to restore access as quickly as possible, but we understand how inconvenient this may have been for you during this time.

Second, you may notice that some or all of your older messages are currently not in your inbox. Rest assured they have not been deleted and if you don't already have them now, they will be available shortly within the next day or two. This issue only impacted existing email in your inbox and, as you can tell, we are delivering new messages into your inbox as usual. However, during the outage, information about your email that helps to categorize your email was lost, so unfortunately you may find it necessary to re-organize your email when it returns.

Our customers have come to expect a high level of service reliability in their experience with Hotmail and, rare as such problems are, we appreciate how inconvenient service problems like this can be when they happen. We so appreciate you being a Hotmail customer and again apologize for the disruption. We're working hard to ensure it never happens again.
