Comments on: Windows 7 preorder a hit--on Amazon

The option to order the new Microsoft operating system early, and at a substantial discount, proves tempting for many users of the online megaretailer and other electronics sellers.

OS X is based on BSD, and that is UNIX. Even 'tho it looks cool and in fact it is easy to use, OS X can be as hard as you want to make it :- )

So, if UNIX can be made so nice and, and Linux is based off of MINIX which is based off of UNIX, then Linux too can be like that one day, just takes times and more developers, is all.

Some random observations:

Microsoft's success relies heavily on the adoption of their OS by the corporate world, which is largely PC-based. While I find it funny to see Macs dominating the business environment in movies, this is rarely the case. Microsoft has a stranglehold in the business world, and that is what drives Microsoft to the top of the market.

The real test will be how the business world adopts Windows 7. I think it will go over much more smoothly than their outright rejection of Vista (largely due to the hardware requirements of Vista vs. 7). 7 can run on a PC that runs XP right out of the box, and it runs stable and looks good. Vista was too demanding to the corporate world, and the PCs required expensive hardware upgrades to run it.

7 will be a success, but it will be interesting to see how well it does. I know I use 7 exclusively on my laptop, and have few negative things to say. It's a very pretty OS, but in this category, Mac has had a dominance on the GUI for quite a while. Microsoft has had to play catch up, and I think they have done it with 7. Just sort of sad it took so long to accomplish.

My company (a small business) will probably wait a while before upgrading to 7, simply because upgrading will be next to impossible -- we'll need to do full installs, which will require reinstalling all the programs and reprogramming all settings. It will be a time-consuming process, which in the business world, means money. As they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it, and our XP machines are not broken. As much as I'd like to move on to Windows 7, I doubt it will happen anytime soon where I work.

if the guys in your IT department is worth their salt, they will have a mixed environment between xp and win7 until they migrate all the desktops over.

I ordered on Amazon because I live in California, where Newegg is based and, thus, they charge sales tax. I'm sure a lot of people went with Amazon because of the sales tax factor.

I built a PC especially for linux last fall, linux is definitely not ready for general use, so I installed XP and then a dual boot with Widows 7. Windows 7 is definitely the way to go. I pre ordered two copies!!!

I have had a PC since 82.

that is so funny because I built a PC just for Windows 7 and Virtualize XP now I run Ubuntu/Linux with virtualbox running XP, hah hah LOL, and I have had a PC since 92 and I can guarantee you my PC running Ubuntu/Linux is more secure and resistant to Web crud than yours. Oh oh maybe is not so funny? And guess what I use it for general use, email, web browsing, office apps, graphic design, video editing etc...

And maybe you're just another Microsoft shill...
by ewelch June 29, 2009 8:24 PM PDT
If it wasn't $49 I would not buy it. As it is, I'll run it inside OS X on occasion in Vmware.

Microsoft is pretty smart to do this promotion. It makes people rush to buy it early, so they can claim it's the best selling Windows of all time. Well, no duh, when people see that it's going to double in price even two months before it goes on sale! The marginal buyers like me would would not buy it for $119 EVER are helping Microsoft make Windows 7 off to a good start.

After the beating OS X has been giving them for the past seven years, it's only fair they get two months reprieve before the next version of OS X comes out and makes Windows 7 look even less innovative.

I am tired of hearing people say that Snow Leopard is a service pack. I am also tired of people saying Windows 7 is a service pack of Vista.

Apple's OS X is simply the same title as Windows is for Microsoft.

Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, Leopard, Snow Leopard

Just like Microsoft uses 95, 98, ME, XP, VIsta, 7

Snow Leopard has been re-built from the ground up to run faster and better keeping the most popular of the OS X versions GUI and adding new features to the dock and much much more.

Windows 7 has been re-worked as well. Also adding new features to its task-bar and much much more. while improving on a less-than-popular OS GUI.

Bottom line...

Both Major Updates, not service packs.

I use both Mac OS X 10.5.7 and Windows Vista SP2

The price of the upgrades in Canada are $65 and $125 CDN well above the exchange rate. As well Canadians can not download a version but have to order it and hope that the store does not run out.

Having 5 XP Pro computers, would cost me $364 with taxes in for Home Premium! Think for now I will stick with XP Pro.

MS does what MS does best. Fooling people to buy the same OS over and over again....is there any difference between Vista and Windows 7? the answer is NONE!

The worst part is that there is no choice for me as I am locked into a Windows world. I would love to switch to something less buggy, but I can't because my company can't switch away. I have no love for Microsoft and I really hope there were a viable alternative.

You Mac diehards are just mad because you know if OS X could not gain more than a 6% market share in 3 years of Vista, your dead now with Windows 7 on the block.

I own an iMac and trying to run this system at a Windows level productivity has given me a system much slower than any Windows machine I ever had. A DVD-R is stuck in the drive and the screen brightness is pale compared to my HP monitor sitting next to it.

Windows 7 is the best OS ever made, simple:

1) It's solid
2) It works smooth on 5 year old machines
3) Direct X 10 for games (Mac and Linux eats crow here)
4) 1080P MKV, MOV and MP4 playback performance is better than Mac.
4.1) An HDMI port to actually connect your computer to a HDTV (Mac don't support HDMI)
5) Blu-ray!
6) you can right-click and sort files filter while in an application file browser (Mac only allow alphabetical order)
7) built-in uPnP
8) will be on $400 netbooks running 1080P video via the Nvidia ION platform.

Mac zealots are going to be wiped out like the Jedi, because The Empire Strikes Back.

You enjoyed your little "I'm a Mac, I'm a PC" commercials... hmmm when is the last time they mentioned Windows 7 in those spots?

The Windows 7 PCs sold this fall will have quad core processors, 8 gigs of ram, and 1tb hd.. all for $899...

Who the hell will want a Mac?

by ckh1272 July 1, 2009 3:11 AM PDT
Hope you don't get a nose bleed standing up on that pedestal. As for the Apple commercials, why would they mention anything about an OS that hasn't officially come out yet?? Everything else you mention is mostly subjective, but everyone is entitled to their opinion (Blu-Ray on my PC, not). Oh, and Display Port supports HDMI!
by Mark_Anderson July 1, 2009 11:26 AM PDT
Well since Apple rarely mention anything about the OS they have out just now in their adverts should we be surprised?
by mikestatic1 July 1, 2009 3:58 PM PDT
Who will want a Mac? People who, unlike yourself, can afford one.
by cs2cdfan July 2, 2009 12:11 PM PDT
@mikestatic1

I am not into $2000 doorstops. Windows 7 will do so much damage to the Mac community, Bill Gates will be saving the company from closure just as he did in 1998 Macworld.

When you buy a Mac, BG gets paid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxOp5mBY9IY

If you are a diehard Mac fan, you are really nothing more than an investor in Windows 7. Thank you for all of your over paying over the years now it is time to make it 1998 again.

The success of the pre-order of Windows 7 only says how bad Windows Vista is. It is so bad that Microsoft should offer the upgrade for free under the faulty product law which requires a product to be fixed for free within 2 years of the date of purchase.

NO ONE Does BLOATWARE LIKE MICROSOFT, combining Windows CE Windows ME and Windows NT we get Windows CEMENT which is the result of Vista AKA Windows 7. For $49 dollars if you have a Windows Vista. Why what happens if I had XP upgraded to Vista Home Premium? I'm I still eligible for the Microsoft savings? OOh the jury still out on that one, these are the questions we should be asking. What happens to the folks who upgraded from XP to Vista?

$50 for nothing, actually for something that I can find for free on Pirate Bay (which was still up and kicking last time I checked), what Win7 has to offer that XP didnt offer? Not for me thanks, I'd rather save my money for something really useful, like the HTC Hero or something...

Hey everyone,

I'm the Lead Program Manager for Microsoft Store (http://store.microsoft.com). Windows 7 Pre-order is also available on Microsoft Store as a few people have mentioned, and one of the big advantages if you get more options for getting your product:

1. Ship the package product: No explanation needed, we'll ship you your copy of Windows 7 by UPS.

2. Download: You can download it on October 22 and don't need to wait for shipment. We also store your product key online in your "Account" area of Microsoft Store, so you don't have any fear of misplacing or keeping track of where your product key is. Additionally, it's a bit greener for the environment :)

3. Download + Backup Disc: Combination of #1 and #2 above, except that the copy that is shipped to you is not in retail packaging and does not come with a product key. Some people prefer this option to get the best of both worlds.

Hope this info helps.

I'm curious how this turns out with respect to drivers.
In my experience, a vanilla Windows image doesn't include drivers for whatever hardware I've installed it on. I've always had to go download all of them. I wonder if everyone buying this knows how to do that, or if they even know how to install Windows themselves instead of buying a computer with Windows on it already.

Ok so, 1. Why are viruses more prone to Windows than any other OS? Its simple math and logic. More people use Windows than any other OS - which would obviously make anyone who makes, writes, or distributes viruses, spyware, malware, ext. - exclusively for windows. Why bother with a small market share when the dominate OS is the "logical" choice. You can't say if the tables were turned and MAC or Linux were in MS shoes, they wouldn't be loaded up with all kinds of comp. threats. Any operating system is vulnerably. If someone wants to "hack" at your comp. they will. No matter what system your using. 2. Why is Microsoft a monopoly? Easy answer. A guy named Bill Gates took his idea that he created for IBM and turned it into something called MS-DOS, his own OS. And the very thing your experiencing now, the internet, - what was it built around? AOL...Good ole' dial up. Sure that is in the past, but what did it build itself on? Windows. Computers have evolved into a great thing. Doing both good and bad for our world. But we all wanted it. 3. What are companies supposed to do? Give a service or product. So, we, make the company do what we want. it's not rocket science. If you break it down. Look between the fine lines, we created Windows because of supply and demand -what the "consumer" wants. And here we are, bickering about flaws and whats better and who is cheating who and ripping who off. You can only rip yourself off. If we demand something, a company will deliver...that's the business. Don't cry and self pity yourself into thinking someone is getting over on you. So for all of you out there who worshiped XP and said Vista was a mistake...Here is your new OS. You ask a company to do something, they will deliver. 4. And what was ever wrong with Vista? Nothing really, just a better operating system that the world wasn't even ready for. Jumping from a 32 bit to 64 bit platform was just to much, or to fast?, for us. So it was frowned on and never given the chance to let the applications catch up with it. Cry cry. What did we do when we went from 16b to 32b....Cry cry and then...yeap you got it...you GOT what you wanted and jumped for joy. Something new, something better. Same thing will happen with Windows 7. It's the same principle as going from analog to digital TV. I think now computers "are" ready to take it to 64bit and leave the 32bit behind. It will. It will. Fiber optic speeds for internet will be taking the break, USB 3.0 will be needed for ripping all of those Blueray discs your gonna want to do. Windows will fall when another guy like Bill G. comes around with a better idea. And I am sure that day will come...He is old, has his money, and made his legacy already. I think he truly wishes someone would come up with a better idea...he prob already has one, but he wont pursue it. So buy what you ask for, don't cry for what you get when its delivered, and accept your own personal responsibility into it. And if you don't like Windows OS, why are you even reading on it and writing bad comments about it. You shouldn't even be interested in it, right??? My guess is, you are still crying....God Bless ~

I really don't understand people who think Linux is not user friendly enough. We've been offering Ubuntu to our customers for some time and the majority of people find Ubuntu easier than Windows. A common comment I hear is "it makes sense". This includes a grandmother and a 76 year old buy who was previously frustrated with Vista.

If you don't like this fact, tough.

You are all crazy. I use Suse. For everything. But I used XP until Last year. The only reaoson I use Linux...I know how to.

Working in IT, I found out about it & saw it- then wanted it.

I understand people like Windows. Its simple, it has pictures of stuff, you dont need to be a computer person to use it. Its safe & cozy.

Personally - I refuse to use it now, its slow & annoying. But I get the fact Linux is not for everyone. I dont push it on ppl...horses for courses.

I hope Win7 is everything people hope it is.
