Web sites launch all the time, but they also shut their doors. We highlight 15 that bit the dust this year.
Let the debate begin: Was the iPhone more important than iTunes? Was anything bigger than Google finding a great business model? CNET offers its list of the 10 most important stories of the '00s.
During her years at CNET News, Ina Fried has changed beats several times, changed genders once, and covered both of the Pirates of Silicon Valley. These days, most of her attention is focused on Microsoft.
Beyond Binary is a look at how technology is changing our lives and the people behind all that life-changing stuff, with an extra emphasis on that which emanates from Redmond, Wash.

Devoting so much time bashing your competition as well as your own partners (I know it's off topic but damn they threw AT&T under the bus!) only tells me they're concerned about their competition enough to devote precious time smearing them.
I'm not sure how saying anything about Windows 7, Vista, and any other non Apple technology contributes to a "Developer Conference". It's just a part of the marketing hype that I had to struggle through listenting to a long a boring keynote. It would have been only 15 minutes long if they stuck to the gems of news everybody really wanted to hear.
FYI, I own laptops and servers of both varieties (OSX and Windows) and like them both. I classify people that denigrate non-preferred Operating Systems in with the same people that are white supremacists. I wish those people would grow up and join the rest of the world that's diversified at least in their own ideals.
So both doing performance updates huh?
Windows 7 is great and I'm sure Snow Lepoard will be great too.
Why all the hate?
You can use Neo Office/Open Office and be much more profitable. There is no irony in your remark other than what seems to be a defeatist admission that you are in some way trapped by Microsoft. I know how you feel buddy. Just cut Microsoft loose for a much happier life. Trust me, I am an old dog and I've got your back on this one. Microsoft own you when you buy their software and that is their mentality, they don't sell software for any other purpose.
There were rumors that Snow Leopard would include some upgrades to Boot Camp, but I haven't seen any mention of that -- is it still in the "rumors" category?
You use Windows? Fine, if you're smart enough to use a good antivirus, and know what and who to avoid, then it's ok.
You use OS X? Great, you can work right on. Just bear with the fact that it has almost no big games. But it really is a safe and usable OS.
As a person who likes watching movies and listening to music, I stream much of that to my XBox over the network to play on my TV and stereo. That is one feature of Windows that I like and as far as I'm aware doesn't exist on the Mac (without buying additional hardware and/or software).
Another would be that, while I don't play a lot, I do like playing the occasional game on my laptop, and there is simply a far better array of games for Windows, than the Mac.
How about some real substance, I'm willing to listen, I'm just hearing a whole lot of garbage out there.
Dumbest quote of the day winner. OS 10.6 is just another version of OS 10.5, is it not?
all my current Macs run Mac OS X10.5, that will change w/ Snow Leopard & i knew the day would come--PPC support would end. will my older Macs still run? yes. will i still be able to run Final Cut Studio 2 on my DP G5? yes. so i'll trudge on, using them until i can get that 8-core MacPro & the G4 iMac dies(knocks wood) & only upgrade the 2 Intel Macs. i can't run the new Hulu desktop app--the iMac is a 1.83 CPU & i don't need 2 GB of RAM on my MacBook to do what i need it to do, but it's no big deal--i've been using my browser & my subscriptions work. i'm happy. we are all(Mac/Windows/PC/Linux) in a never-ending upgrade or die(lose support) cycle in some way from somewhere, yet many times we find work-arounds that get refined or tweaked to make/keep our current stuff(hardware or software) useable. keep on keepin' on! B-)
Is that why PC World said the iLife was the best software suite out there currently? It's $79 for the software and free on a new computer. Good stuff really if you've never had the pleasure to use it.
Never mind, it's entertaining just reading them.
