I successfully loaded Windows 7 on a laptop. Must have been my lucky day because it failed twice on a desktop install - even with a newely formatted partition! First time was an upgrade - HA!!! Forget about upgrading. Second time on a brand new hard drive with freshly formatted partition. It locked up on install. I'm running a Dell XPS 710!! It's garbage right now. Throw out all your A/V software because you'll have to load up a new version that work only with Windows 7. Ya more money to upgrade! Those saying it is so great must be on that medical marijuana or something. It will be a disaster on roll out and I'll bet you it will cost as much as a new netbook too! No thanks.

If your install failed twice then you must have a bad burn/download or faulty hardware. If you pay for anti-virus software then you are just an idiot. There are so many free ones out there that do better than the paid versions, and many are Win7 compatible already. Put the computer down, get "Computers for Dummies", and read it.

I just hope that it would be possible to incorporate the AeroPeek for FireFox where it would preview the individual tabs like it does for IE (which is a feature and can be uninstalled).

if you're getting a laptop for school you should check to see if your school sells discounted copies of Vista. If that is the case they will most likely offer a heavily discounted copy of Windows 7 sometime second semester. That's how the vista upgrade worked at my school. A legal copy of Vista Ultimate cost me $20 with my student ID a few months after launch!

Why can't I read a store about a new operation system without nonsense posts from Apple fanboys?

Well, we seem to have all flavors here, so plenty of chastising to go around. OSX, Windows, Linux, heck even OS2.

It's an operating system, not a religion.
by kelmon June 3, 2009 2:29 AM PDT
Believe you me, users of each platform think the same thing whenever a story about their platform appears. Just accept this as a fact of life and filter out the nonsense posts. After a while you'll recognise the usernames of the people that just post rubbish and you can ignore them quite easily.

The Apple fans are the most annoying. Like a Prius owner at a gas station. They have to go over to you and say Ha ha my car gets better mpg.

I feel that Vista activation keys should work for Windows 7. Let the Windows XP users pay!

I don't see what all the fussing is all about. I'm a Linux user and a happy one. Who cares what YOU use? It's all about freedom to choose. I didn't like Windows 7 RC1 myself, but other people do. I've been playing The Sims 3, Left4Dead and Red Alert 3 in Ubuntu and it works great. Mac OSX is based on unix. So it's pretty much like paying for Linux-like stability. No operating system is better than the other since they all serve the same function to certain degrees. Microsoft has faults, Apple has faults and yes, even Linux has faults.

Well said...wish more people had your sensibilities.

To be honest, I think opinion like that is wishy-washy nonsense. The fact is that each platform is different and it is quite possible for one to be better than another, although you do need to take into consideration what it is that you need. I know for a fact that Linux is not a good platform for what I need and due to this I am using the Mac platform. But what you need may well be different to me. Ultimately, it usually depends on the applications but sometimes OS provided functionality is critical, such as the excellent colour management in OS X that is vital for imaging workflows.

But I do agree with sensibility of your post that people generally shouldn't feel the need to tell you to use what they use if you are perfectly happy with what you have. Advice when you are having a problem, however, is welcome.

Can't wait to upgrade to 7 once and for all. I just keep vista because of the Direct X 10 games. Vista is not one of Microsoft's successes. 7 is what they need for a boost.

P.S. To all those Windows VS Mac people, please stop arguing and start appreciating what Apple and Microsoft are doing for us. These people innovate and share with us. Just learn to say thanks for once.

I think this will be great BUT price is going to kill them. If they don't have Home Premium and even Professional in the hundreds competing with Mac OS X, they will be making a huge mistake. I mean, who really wants to just drop $300 on an OS, when most people are running on XP and having no problems with it? Especially Vista users. they should have to pay a lot less with all the hell they have gone through.

I still cant believe how Microsoft was so flexible with this operating system, releasing these "beta" versions and offering free product keys of this OS publicly and letting them install it on any computer, I think its pretty scary. Anyone could have done countless things with this. Dont get me wrong, I personally have tried Windows 7 and I think is a real good jump from Vista to this. But, anyone else with me on how scary this got to be? What was Microsoft thinking?

Apple in trouble, give me a break!!!! I see no reason to go back to Windows 7 or what F! they are going to call it. Even if it is that good, it's too late. Many market options now, OpenSolais, Linux, OS X and even the older Windows XP.

If you guys think that MS is going to go back to 96% market share, you are smoking crack, those days are over. My logs read that 83% of visitors were Windows users and right behind Linux.

Despite what your "logs" may tell you (snicker), Windows global market share is over 90%.
That's not changing anytime soon...but it might increase. Don't cry.

Totally agree, very few care. It is like women' handbags or shoes: some have to have the latest product no matter what.

After my struggles with Vista, Windows 7 must be ready and on point out of the box. This is MS last chance and cannot alienate the masses. If this fails in multiple instances Mac (Ugh!) will be my next OS. My twenty something daughters swear by Apple.

As long as the upgrade to 7 is about $100 i'm game. But im really not seeing to much more offered than what im getting with Vista Home Premium. Can someone tell me some of the differences that would make me hype to upgrade?

Finally an OS that will be secure, fast and stable. Congrats Microsoft. In the meantime I'm stuck to DOS for my mainstream applications.

Finally I will be able to say "goodbye and good riddance" to Windows XP. October 22nd cannot come soon enough for that reason, although I hope that the price of Windows 7 Professional won't be too nuts.

@kelmon

Whatever the price of Windows 7, it will be more reasonable & affordable than the the ridiculous fee Apple charges for its dot releases or as some would call, glorified service packs. Windows upgrade prices are always more reasonable & affordable than the Mac counter part. Don't cry.

OK people remember to not go out and buy the $400 version, wait for the OEM or better deal from newegg. My copy of vista was $99.

Why would anyone buy anything other than OEM?

Because They Are Either
1) Stupid
2) Want Pretty Packaging.
