Comments on: Microsoft confirms Zune HD coming this fall

The new device will feature an HD Radio tuner and OLED screen, but will it be enough to take on the iPod Touch? Also, Microsoft is rebranding Xbox video service with Zune name.

i feel like this is gonna be a beta version even when it's out. i will expect microsoft to release a better version like few months after the release of this one. Just like what apple did. makes you feel like a ******* but still you cant stop from buying the new one.

Yeah but unlike apple, microsoft updates your software on your zune when software is upgraded. ipod users just have to buy a new ipod.

Dont worry guys, it shouldn't take long for a few hundred beer and fart apps to show up for the HD. Probably not long for the tens of useful apps either.

Thats great and all, but seriously, how many people will want to develop for the zune HD? How many zune users are there anyway? Apple has already cultivated millions of users, and thousands of applications (albeit, most of them being extremely useless), and none of them will want to move over to the zune, not after they have already gotten used to the iphone/touch, and all the applications they have purchased. Microsoft is walking into the fire on this one, and I doubt they will get out alive, unless they pull up something great (like the zune HD being priced at less than $150).

Agreed.

@ Yelonde: I agree if you say it will be difficult for Microsoft to overthrow the iPod with the Zune (I know I wouldn't switch mine for any Zune), but I think you are either forgetting or underestimating the fact that Zune is the 2nd most sold hard drive-based digital music player wordwide and this is Microsoft - the world's biggest software company with the deepest pockets around and a history of success winning batles and wars just like these, regardless of what excuses many people like to come up with to explain that (they were in pretty much the same position with the Xbox and look where they are now).

"[...] will it be enough to take on the iPod Touch?"

Take? Yes. Beat? No. Then again, they were in pretty much the same position with the Xbox in the beginning and we all know where they are now, so you can never know for sure, especially with Microsoft I would say. Even being different segments, I know I wouldn't switch my 160 GB iPod Classic for any Zune (Zune HD included), but it is nice seeing Microsoft closing the gap. Who knows one day (again the Xbox comes to mind)?

If you are asking yourself - and recognizing its value nevertheless -, I would also still prefer an iPod Touch to this.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I cannot WAIT to see what the capacity is going to be! So this is going to be a flash memory unit? I am damn glad for that. ENOUGH with the spinning platters at high rpm and all the heat thereof... Very excited! Good intro vid, btw... Peace, TL Walker

Ummm. The radio tuner is what's going to compete with the Touch? And since I can buy a radio tuner at the Dollar Tree for exactly one dollar, that's going to make me want a Zune?

Microsoft couldn't Think Different, no matter how hard it tried.

Ok... Use your brain totallymadeupname. Why would Microsoft use FUD in this situation? No company is going to back down on their support for Apple and the ipod touch. This makes no sense at all, even if it did happen in the past. The only thing that FUD would cause for Microsoft in this case is bad publicity. When this product DOES release itouch owners will finally realize that ipods suck.

Sounds pretty good based on what I've heard thusfar. I guess I'll wait and see what hardware they are planning to put in this baby.

As a side note, you people need to learn the differences between its/it's and their/there. It's really embarrassing and makes me think your IQ hovers around 80. = I ignore your post.

We thought Microsoft was going to wait for E3 but looks like they let some of cat out of the bag. The new Zune HD has officially been announced and it looks pretty sweet so far. This new device will go head to head with the iPod Touch. The Zune HD will be able to surf the Web, play high-definition movies, and tune in to digital radio. Those are some nice features but we are going to need some games to make it all the worth while. But looks like they will make the full announcement and show off all the details during the Microsoft keynote next week at E3.
