The software, expected to be released broadly on Tuesday, arrives just ahead of that time on Microsoft's Web site.

Why no comments about the horrible defaut task bar? I mean, I live Win7 too but I also love my quick launch by my start bar (for my VPN client, Browser, "show desktop", Outlook, and explorer).

You have to semi 'hack' the old style quick launch back in there. This"pin to tab" crap they have by default sucks.

So Windows 7 gets a 9/10 in my book, with the -1 being the stupid default task bar (unless they changed for RC? I'm running a slightly older beta)

WHat the hell are you talking about? Your entire taskbar is now a quicklaunch bar...
The icons on the taskbar are now your quicklaunch and "openen windows" fused together. It's great!
And why the "pin to taskbar" bashing? That's totally ridiculous, consideriing you had to add programs to the quicklaunch as well. It actually became EASIER to pin programs now. It's one click, whereas you had to drag/drop etc before.

I've been using 7 as production since the beta (yes, it was that good). And believe me when I tell you: a month of 7 and you will never want to loose the new taskbar again. Returning to vista or XP will be out of the question.

Windows 7 is by far the best product of microsoft EVER.

Started at 9:45 AM ET. Accessed the MS download page, got my key, and downloaded the ISO with no problem. Was getting ~750KB/sec download speed and it took about 50 minutes. Burning disk now. Download experience is MUCH better than with the earlier beta release - actually, it was flawless this time.

Downloads of 32-bit and 64-bit versions went very smoothly this morning. Microsoft did a good job with server capacity this time around.

I really liked the Win7 beta, but must admit this is much cleaner and snappier. IE8 is a MUCH improved version over the IE8 beta which shipped in build 7000. I'm running Win7 on my media center PC and right now on my 42" screen, I have email open, IE8 with several tabs, some desktop gadgets, AIM, some other minor stuff and am watching TV in a small media center window while pumping surround sound to my receiver. There seems to be no noticeable performance lag in any of the applications and the TV show has continued seamlessly. Did I mention I am doing this with 1 GB of RAM?

I still have some gripes about the new taskbar. I also think some of the features like aeropeek and aeroshake are gimmicky, but I guess we live in the iphone world now and all interfaces need some cool wow features regardless of usefulness.

This is not a tablet PC which is unfortunate since the UI almost begs you to touch it and flick it round. Even though I don't like the taskbar for the typical mouse user, it would be great for your fingers. If you've seen the multi-touch Microsoft Surface tables, they've taken the same concept it put it into the desktop/laptop. Windows has had touch since XP and Vista, but Win7 is the first with MULTITOUCH baked directly into the OS. Note this is not app based touch, but part of the OS and pervasive. So any app should be able to take advantage.

Check it out if you get the chance. After install, you still need to visit Windows Update and get the latest drivers. Believe it or not, beta drivers are already available on the update site. Unlike Vista, 3rd party developers seem to be AHEAD of the game this time around.

This is going on my mother-in-law's computer (she could use an upgrade from XP as UAC for her will actually be a good thing!). I just need to get a blank DVD to burn the ISO to next... off to the store!

Downloaded the RC1, 32bit version of Windows 7 this mornng before coming to work and will install this weekend after I create a disaster recovery disk for my backup on my Windows Home Server. Previously ran the Beta version but went back to XP Professional until RC1 became available. What amazed me is that Microsoft will allow us to run this RC1 version until March 2010, when we will have to purchase the retail version. Interesting approach to force you to upgrade to retail version by shutting down your RC1 version after 2 hours of use each time. Did others receive this same notification? - Craig

Could someone who has Windows7 and is using Magicjack confirm for me that the internet phone device does indeed work with 7? I was informed that the Magicjack program will not work with 7 until a patch is provided.

IE8 is faster on Windows 7 RC than Vista. What a pleasant surprise. In fact it's so fast that I didn't have an urge to download FF or Chrome. The must have improved the Javascript engine.

So far it runs all the software...at least all the things I needed for the last few days. Media Center is vastly improved. The new task bar is cool.

Now the public can have a free OS for ...a year? How cool is that?

Windows 7 beta is superbad, won't be long before I download the RC and check it out. Super sweet OS.
So far I am happier with Ubuntu 8.10 than with 9.04, but I'm sure that will change when they release the ATI catalyst drivers.(should have stuck with the King NVIDIA). Still running XP SP3 on my old Dell Dimension and it runs absolutely perfect(its a rambus PC 800 setup, and its very fast for a 1.5ghz)

I tried to download it, but a java downloader which was built into the browser started up, and then didn't download. Is there a way to get the URL for the download, instead of using the wee crappy one? Like using a dedicated download client?
