Comments on: Get a 6-foot HDMI cable for $3.19 shipped

No, it's not made of yarn or fishing wire. This is the real deal, perfect for connecting your Xbox 360, Blu-ray player, or whatever to your HDTV. You could pay more, but why?

If HDMI had been designed by a signals engineer instead of the content protection crowd you would have seen a much different and more forgiving cable. One of the statements above that says digital is less prone to noise errors is incorrect. The biggest reason for the digital transmission success rates is the ability to re-transmit packets that are corrupted. In the case of digital video transmission there is no opportunity to re-transmit. Every bit needs to make it through right the first time or the video loses sync (timing reference). Twisted pair (HDMI) was a poor choice for video transmission and is being made worse as bandwidth goes up. Cable quality is therefore more of a factor in the transmission and results in higher production costs to ensure that quality especially as the length increases. That said I still think Monster is overpriced especially for the shorter cables.

I actually got kicked out of Best Buy many years ago, I was working as an Apple Rep selling the old Indigo iMacs and one the store employess for some odd reason asks me what the difference was between gold plated cables and non-gold plated cables. I replied $30.00. I was asked to leave the store because of that, during Thanksgiving holiday shopping days. Mind you the store manager was fired over it, lol. But truthfully people, having worked with electronics for many many years, gold pating does nothing, unless "both" units your pluggin the cable into also has gold pating. Don't be fooled. Good article, I go to Monoprice to get my cable supplies.

It's well known that retailers like Best Buy and Fry's deliberately understock or don't stock cables other than Monster's overpriced garbage. The margins on Monster cables are huge for the stores, which is why they push them.

It is an unquestionable fact that Monster cables are no different from "generic" cables except in appearance. Numerous studies, scientific and non-scientific, have shown this. Studies of Monster's financials show that they pay no more for materials than anyone else.

Hey guys. Why didn't you mentioned that an HDMI cable is no more than a different spec'd USB type cable, which of course can sell for no more than 10 bucks.

All those companies (Monster, in particular) were accustomed and themselves accustomed customers to analog cables, where noise to signal ratio did make a difference. Now with advanced Shielded Twisted Pairs and lots of redundancy and packet transmission, there is no big difference if the cables 100% copper, is oxygen free, etc. Save yourself money and invest on those in the analog side.

BTW. If you think that better cable give you better video performance, consider this. We manage several Computer sites, most of them with Gigabit ethernet, that is 1Gb/s. (HDMI is 4Gb/s) and most of them are bargain basement RJ-45 connections. We have several 5 Gb with STP cable, but one time we used plain old UTP and things worked great. Bits are bits and HDMI is no different.

Alas, 4Gb/s HDMI 1.0 is not enough for REAL HD movies, so you'll artifacts when playing your BluRay in high motion scenes in 1080p. I guess the BD standard needs a BD-2 more in tune with HDMI 1.4.

Thanks for the link. I'd rather pay $3.15 and take the chance it doesn't work than to pay $30 to find out I overpaid for a cable. At worst case I pay an extra $315 for the mistake, and at best I save $27.

I'm a Comcast customer, and get all my HDMI cables free from them. I just go into the office and ask for them, and there has never been a charge.
