You'll be surprised by the depth and breadth of the free tools Microsoft offers budding Web denizens in its Microsoft Office Live Basics package, which has a decidedly business focus.

I am trying to cut loose from Win Office Live after 2 months of frustration. They used Melbourne IT as my registrar. GoDaddy has been trying to transfer me, but no one answers the emails I keep sending about the transfer, through GoDaddy. Microsoft also ignores my emails about wanting to transfer to Google Apps. If you want to use Google's Affiliate Program, or most Affiliate Programs, period [pay for ads shown on your site], or post a link to another site for pay, Microsoft doesn't allow you to get into the nuts and bolts of your page to add code. The module function for adding HTML sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Woe be unto you if you use Firefox or Linux. In Firefox your edit window is tiny. Why pay Melbourne IT $14.95/yr when you can pay GoDaddy under $10? Also, the Windows Live Mail times out in my Thunderbird email program. Google works great, never a problem. I wanted to use Google Mail. I don't have a password for the Melbourne IT site, and Microsoft won't give me one, so I can create my own A records, CNAME records, or MX records to change the mail! It's my domain, and I want access! I want the freedom to change registrar or host!! I advise against getting your domain registration from Melbourne IT, or free hosting from Windows Office Small Business Live. There are cheaper domain registrars. There are other excellent free Web hosts, such as Google. If you like Google, you will not be happy on Windows Live. I surely am not, and my business has come to a halt because of this trying to transfer nightmare. Research before you buy.

Apparently this is no longer going on. I signed up, and they are asking me to pay $14.95 for a domain. They gave me some crazy long subdomain though... not even worth using.
