Back in February there was a post on here about a similar deal that had a BluRay & HD-DVD drive (shortly before the war ended) and I picked up that system. I have been very pleased with it since, and if I had the spare cash I would pick up this one too.

I'm just curious - I know of two people whose BluRay drives in their computers no longer play newer BluRay movies and the manufacturer of the drives (Pioneer) hasn't released updated firmware for them.

Is this is commonly occurring issue with computer based BluRay drives?

Yeah, I gotta say, I am sorely tempted to make this my long-overdue new PC. I'm sitting here with a hulking Pentium 4 desktop that's nearly four years old. Four!

That offer was too good to pass up! Ordered and being built by 9/15. Just what I've been looking for!

I want a blu-ray burner, not just a player. USB 3.0 ports and a 24 inch high definition monitor. At least it is not refurbished.

Don't expect to see that on the Cheapskate blog for a few more years, even at refurbished prices.

Hey Rick, I really enjoy your blog and check it everyday, but it seems like you've recently just been posting a lot of Woot items. I'm already an avid Woot fanboy and I'd like to see you post more items from other sites. Thanks! I look forward to reading your blog.

Haha, sorry about that. For some reason I thought this was a woot item. I'm an idiot, but at least I caught my mistake.

Why get this when you can get an Intel quad-core for $499 (Unfortunately Vista 32 bit Premium but you can buy the 64 bit at various sites for $99 to upgrade it but it comes with Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q6600, 3 GB ram, and 500 GB hard drive.) without messing with a rebate with a one year on site warranty from Dell? http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DDDADG4&s=dhs&dgc=CJ&cid=24471&lid=730577 for Vista or http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DDDADGX&s=dhs&dgc=CJ&cid=24471&lid=712629 for XP Home. The model I'm suggesting has 4 memory slots (dual-channel), Pci-express slot, and is far more for far less. I thought this was supposed to be a section for us cheapskates, this HP isn't much of a bargain computer.

We'll have to agree to disagree. There are no rebates to mess with on this deal, and for the same money you're talking about for the Dell, you're getting more RAM, a Blu-ray drive, HDMI, etc.

i read your blog pretty much everyday. i love it. i've seen some great deals- thanks to you- that i never would've known about otherwise. i have to admit though, this one has me drooling. OMG what an amazing deal. i've been waiting to find a great deal like this before purchasing a new home computer. i fear the coupon will have expired by now. i can only imagine how many people read this blog. thanks anyways! keep it up!!

Forked_Tongue,

That Dell also doesn't have Blu-ray player, a dedicated video card, or a 1394 port. While these things may or may not be important to you, they do add value for a lot of other people. I took advantage of the coupon and used it for a different HP system (m9300t). For $600, I got:

- Vista Home Premium 32bit
- 2.4ghz Intel quad core
- 3GB RAM
- nVidia 9300GT 256mb video card w/ HDMI, DVI, VGA
- Bluray reader/dvd writer
- NTSC and ATSC tuners
- builtin memory card reader
- two 1394 ports
- 7.1 speaker outputs
- Media Center remote control

I'll take that system anyday over the $500 Dell system you proposed.

Marty 1781, when I configured the computer on their site it shows that you can't order it with that combo of quad cpu and 256mb video card (I don't know if this Nvidia card has the digital audio output thru the hdmi interface some of them has.), it forces you to take the higher dollar option of the 512mb card at $30 more, the subtotal I got was $1149.99 (after the $100 instant discount) before applying the code DT1158 to get the additional $400 discount ($1149.99 - $400.00 = $749.99, $250 more than the dell I suggested) when I ran it. The $250 could easily buy the difference of a discrete graphics card, tuner card/remote, firewire combo card, media bay card reader, blueray player/dvd burner, and cables from newegg but I agree with you that I'd take your option instead, the hassle of putting it together isn't worth it for the average Joe plus your option has a better quad core option and they'll even throw in Vista 64 at no extra charge to take advantage of the extra memory (which may be required in the future), much better bargin for most people.
