At the global cargo company's Louisville air-distribution center, up to 900,000 packages are sorted each night. It's impressive to watch.

The video doesn't work... says "We're Sorry, This Video Is No Longer Available". Good article, but some more technical info about how their systems work and the logistics involved would make it better.

Video worked fine for me. I have to see this for myself. Is observation open to the public?

You should visit the FedEx' WorldHub. It handles 3.3 milion packages per day with 140 planes every night. http://news.van.fedex.com/node/3710 FedEx is the World largest airline with almost 700 planes

NetJets has more planes than that. :-)

NetJets is not a airline and they don't own the planes. Their website says they have 750 planes under management.

Loved the article!

While USPS and FedEx are technically impressive, the US Postal service blows me away just for its size and scope. In 2005 they delivered 211 billion! pieces of mail. That's about 678 million a day. They also go to 114 million addresses each day.

All 3 of them blow chunks. I want a freaking delivery service that ships 24/7. I don't give a rats a$$ about waking up neighbors. Some of us work ALL HOURS. In fact that will be the name of MY new delivery business. 24/7

is this a way of contradicting the negative advertisement and redicule ups has been getting for the software no left turn delieveries going green i am curious how can they do no left turn i would like to know

as i agree with blurble beside ups delivery they are lacking in thier customer service in thier presidental offices the usps beats then at every thing fedex comes in second as they will deliver ground service on saturday while ups will not until the next business day and will not ajust thier service for people who cannot be home after 5pm for ground services their answer was u get what u pay for
ups lost the sense that without customers they will not be in business so hurray for usps and fedex ups should remember grayhound also deliver packages and blurble will soon has his start up delivery lol

hey why dont you guys go work at ups for a while. then you will understand why they dont deliver ground on saturdays and the problems with customer service. you dont understand that ups is a much more business delivery focused than residential focused service. If you understood the way the company operates, then you wouldnt complain.

I just wanted to give you a heads up...the picture of the plane that is being loaded/unloaded is not a 757. Its a wide bodied plane. 757 can not hold the bigger containers (A1s) and only have one row of containers instead of two that face eachother. The plane could be an Air Bus A300, 767, MD-11, or if the door is on the back of the plane a 747.

Also...any business is going to have there downfalls. UPS has many very good qualities about them. I think that it is funny how people are so ready to put down a company or how things are run when they have no idea what is going on. If you can do it better, I would like to see it.
