GTA IV is a great selling game but this is much like movie ticket sales numbers.
In another year the games will cost a bit more and there will be more people with the consoles.

Show me some percentage numbers that show how truly popular GTA IV is and I'll be impressed.

I'll admit, Halo 3 was a good game, but Grand Theft Auto has a much longer legacy. And yes it is on multiple consoles, even if Halo 3 was on the same consoles it would have been close but GTA IV would have still triumphed.

Come out with Halo 4 and make it available on all three consoles.... That would smash every record. short of that nope.

In comparison to other FPS games the Halo series is not even close to the top 5. The only reason Halo appears to be so big is because of it's marketing strategies. Halo commercials were all over the place just like stupid campaign commercials. I saw like 1 GTA 4 commercial and a couple of posters in some game shops. If you are going to compare games...make sure you pick one that can even come close to comparing.

The fact that Halo 3 and GTA IV were so high selling just shows that they are easy casual games for the less intelligent crowd. Games that cater to serious gamers or that play to a smarter audience will sell less because there are fewer of those people out there.

Dumbing down entertainment for the sake of making more money isn't something I would recommend though. People get stupider every year and yet instead of challenging them all we do is try to make them feel better about themselves. What will life be like 500 years from now when everyone has the IQ of a rock?

I would be more impressed if the comparison was inflation adjusted, or even better, Units sold. Units sold will tell how many people were willing to pay. inflation adjusted assumes the game price is consistant between games and platforms which we know isn't reality.

Let's be honest. The reason this game is breaking records is because of the adult content. How often in a main stream console game does your character get to steal, kill and destroy then get a lap dance and "make love" in your car? If the adult film industry is huge then a video game where you can engage in "adult film like" behavior will be huge as well. And if you think that kids under 17 are not playing this then you do live in a dream world. Add on name recognition, negative publicity and a decent game interface and you have the makings of a half a billion dollar winner.

What most aren't considering is that Halo 3 was ONLY for the 360 platform. GTAIV sold to both 360 and PS3 gamers.
What income came from new buyers of bundles?
What versions sold the most and where?
What about the PS3 freeze issues? Did the server load patch fix that?

Many PS3 gamers are waiting for MGS4, but again, that is JUST for the PS3 and limited to its sales.
And there are many other titles in the pipe than those listed here (Resistance 2, Gears of War 2, MetalGear Solid 4, other sequels...).
But it will take some time...and it has to be a game on both consoles for the numbers...

Halo is not even that great of a game if you compare it to all of the great FPS' of the past and the ones that are soon to be released. The only reason Halo was as sucessful as it was is because of marketing and lack of good games for the 360 at the time of release. FPS games suck on consoles anyways.

WoW is dead next week when AOC is released so I would not even put WoW on the list.

I don't know about you but Starcraft 2 has millions of followers more than GTA:IV

Blizzard Is doing a launch of it Simultaneously around the world much like GTA:IV. i believe if i am not mistaken but is anyone out there thinking that something like Starcraft 2 might surpass GTA:IV in sales the first day or week?

Just my 2 Cents

The only game that I think will beat GTA 4 sales would be Killzone 2.

If anyone had any sort of morals, they would not buy this game. This game is the demoralization of our nation. I know its just a video game. But I live in a small village in Alaska, I moved here 3 years ago from California. I am a teacher that is around the kids all the time, and so many of you will argue that kids are not effected by what they see on tv or play in games. Well that is definitely not true. Most of kids here in the village have never been out of our town that only has 370 people, no cars, no roads. The way these kids want to dress, act and speak, all comes from what they see on tv and play in video games. Because they think thats what life is really like in the lower 48. Why not they have never been there. So all you people that bought this game, especially the ones that bought it for their kids, I hope you can rethink you reasons for buying and throw it away.

Every gta4 give to a store WILL COUNT for a sale, no matter if the game is in a corner accumulating dust or in the final customer hand.

The game is so popular because it is massive and non-linear but still has good controls, pretty solid graphics, and lots of action. Halo is a FPS. That's it. It's a good game but you only buy it for multiplayer. GTA has a huge single player game with upcoming downloadable content plus good multiplayer. And it's very well done. It's extremely rare that you can actually get a non-linear game that has good graphics and controls and that isn't a RPG. That's why the series does well. It isn't because of sex (very little content and not graphic) or being more violent than other games (because it isn't). It's popular because they did a very good job on every aspect of the game. It has a great story and your choices influence which direction the story goes in. You can also just go do things like play darts for an hour or shoot pool, it's not just going and shooting people up, and the violence is actually pretty rare compared to everything shooter on the market.

Most of my friends who like the GTA series talk about how they like just goofing off and not doing anything. They like trying to see how long they can hold off the police or climbing up to the top of a building and shooting people with a rocket launcher to kill stress. The biggest reason it sells, and I think you sort of agree with this, is because of the sand-box style gameplay that lets control freaks not feel like they have to do this or that. They can do whatever they want.
