I have purchased three, and have never stopped using any of them. I have a 3rd Gen (like the one pictured), a 2nd gen Shuffle, and the iPod Touch. Excessive? Maybe. But I use all of them frequently (two of them everyday).

Got my first iPod (3rd Gen 8gig nano) as a Christmas gift (two weeks before Christmas).

I mostly listen to NPR podcasts (28 separate programs) and rarely watch video on it (the Onion and the PC Gamer video podcasts). Still cannot get that iYule burning log video to work on my iPod. Will give up on that one til next Christmas season.

Ironically, I have been purchasing a great deal of music from iTunes prior to getting my iPod. After receiving it, I will shop there only to get a difficult to find single or album and will continue to dive into their massive library of podcasts. Mostly I will get my mp3's from amazon. I have ripped several cd's (a handful of which I specifically bought off of ebay - afforded only by a generous grant from Paypal credit ... a personal recession has been hovering over me this year).

I spent nothing on iPod accessories though I really need an nano cover as it already looks pretty thrashed (the back looks like it was attacked by a rabid puma). My best friend bought a $100 Kensington iPod to car radio transmitter and that was an absolute waste of money. Worked without static 30 to 40 seconds out of every 5 minutes of playing and we never could get it to play that long without interruption. This piece of junk was bought from the Soho Apple store no less.

Long live amazon DRM free music downloads!

I got the Griffen car link using the built in Sansa FM. What I found is that you can limit the static by turning up the Sansa to about 3/4 sound and cut back the sound on the radio. I live in one of those markets where virtually every station is taken and it took a bit of checking to find some empty space (92.9, oddly). When set like this, it has worked great. However, if you keep the Sansa sound low and raise the radio to compensate, the static is a real problem.

4 so far.

Bought an original iPod when the 2nd gen ones came out--dealer was selling for just over half-price. Still works, though I don't use it.

Then bought an original iPod mini for my spouse who still uses it. ("Why would I want video? It works fine, besides you got it engraved for me!" she says when I suggest she upgrade to a new Nano.)

Then bought a 40 gig iPod Photo just when the original Shuffles came out--dealer was having a sale. That one was stolen from my gym locker in a split second a few months ago--right after I'd had the hard drive replaced.

Now have a 30 gig 5th gen iPod video. But I don't take it to the gym anymore. Used in the bedroom stereo and taken on trips.

On second IPod Touch, likely to be third. It won't sync with my laptop, and this has caused genius desk to give me a new one. Yes, all my software is current!
Own two nanos. Both have the dwindling battery life issue. One was already replaced by Apple.
As long as they keep giving me new ones, I'll keep buying...

The problems you describe are just the reason I switched to Sansa. The tech people at Sandisk worked out my computer problems in about 10 minutes. The machine has taken a beating, but the hard metal back case has done a good job of protecting my much smaller investment.

I have three iPods.

A third Gen iPod which I bought for myself.

My wife then wanted one and didn't care if it was new or not. So I bought a 4th gen iPod 60 gb for myself.

I then bought a nano (the one just before the current ones) which was easier for me for working out and that kind of thing. I don't have my 30 gb of music with me but I do have my best songs so I guess I'm ok.

Now that I have the nano my 4th gen iPod is now connected to my Prius use a DICE device which lets me see the artist, album, and song on the Prius' screen and I can somewhat control it using steering wheel controls. When the car turns off the iPod goes into sleep mode.

My wife and I listen to a LOT of audio books in our car. We get them from the library, import them into the iPod, listen to them, then delete them to free up room and also because we didn't buy them so I don't keep them.

My wife and I are waiting for our Verizon cell phone contracts to expire. When they do we will both be buying iPhones which I hope will have 16gb of memory by then.

I really like the location finder the the iphones with google maps that was just announced. That was one thing I really wanted so I can have it find things close to me without having to type in where I was at the time.

The word in tech land is that the new generaion iPhone will finally have a card slot, so you can add memory. I just hope it isn't a microSD card, as they are just too small and fragile. I prefer the old SD card.

I've had 5 (just for me)

1 - 2nd gen with the 4 buttons on top
2 - dad won it n gave it to me - 3rd gen, all wheel, no color
3 - 2nd one broke (they said water got in it even tho it wasn't near any, therefore voided warranty). bought the 4th gen, picture ipod
4 - girlfriend won a video ipod n since she had just bought one gave it to me after i treated to a few nice dinners.
5 - 4th broke, they said it had a small dent that could've caused it, whatever. in warranty so i got it for free.

some would say i throw them around, but my 1st ipod still works, it's my mom's now. i usually use them at the gym or in car/plane. basically when i don't have my computer.

got for chanukah the first dock system, it was like 150 at the time. no other accessories, they're pointless cause they come out with new ones almost every yr.

personally i think the 2nd/3rd gen were the best made. the new ones i think r built crappier b/c people care more about the size than the quality of the device.

Never owned one. Driving to work I listen to NPR, or channel surf, or pop in the rare CD. At home I have an extensive vinyl and CD collection (I'm an "audiophile" from the '60s, man).

I've only had two, a year old classic and to replace it a new 80Gb Classic iPod. My girlfriend on the other hand got six in the past two years alone. She's lost one to a fire in an apt, lost one on the subway, one in a taxi, broke one, and finally I gave her one for Xmas last year that made it a whole year.

First generation iPod bought used on eBay in early 2003. (Still works, but currently retired)
Bought an iPod Classic 80GB in October 2007 (returned due to firmware issue involving battery life) iPod Classic 160GB (returned due to bad hard drive. LOUD grinding noises) and my current iPod Classic 160GB which works fine with the recent firmware upgrade to 1.0.3. Just upgraded to firmware version 1.1 today - let's see if I regret that. CoverFlow seems faster now.

I rip cds using Apple Lossless, rip no LPs although I do listen to them a lot, and I have also bought a fair number of songs via iTunes which don't sound very good compared to lossless rips. I also use it to watch video webcasts and iTunes TV shows.

I have an Apple iDock which I have yet to use. The Wadia iTransport looks more useful to me.

I use aftermarket headphones - all 32 ohm types (currently modestly priced JVC or Grado SR-60) as the stock ear buds sound lousy.

never owned and Ipod and am not much interested in one. I dislike the proprietary file system the device uses. Also, I'm just one of those who thinks Apple is mostly about slick marketing and hype....His Steveness (in my book) has no clothes.

I have one iPod unopened, in the original box. I got it as part of a promotion and have never felt the need to use it. My life doesn't require a sound track.

My first iPod was a 1st gen 512mb Shuffle I bought for 100$. I loved the thing to death, but the memory was just too dang small. It is now retired and used for skiing, moutain biking and other dangerous activities known to electronics.

I am currently on my second iPod. It's an iPod classic 80gb. I primarly use it for music, although I have two full length movies on it. I also use it as a backup hard drive for my computer as well. (my computer only has a 60gb hard drive).

I have not purchased very many things along the years, although I have bought a Phillips Shoqbox, as well as some Logitech FreePulse wireless earphones to go with me, as well as a iSkin Evo4 case for the iPod Classic.

I jumped on the bandwagon late, but I've only ever had a 5th gen iPod Video 60GB.

I'm afraid the battery is starting to dwindle though :\

I have had a total of 26 ipods......mainly purchasing "broken" ipods which were thought to have a hard drive issue, but really it was only a software glitch. Owned 8 b/w U2 4gs, 2 color u 4gs, 1 u2 5g, 1 3g, 1 40 gig photo, 1 nano, 5 b/w 4gs, one original, and two broken videos. My core ipods are the 1 3g, 1 photo u2, video u2, and the original.

I have purchased two and gave one as a gift.
Purchased:
Gen 2 of iPod (battery life was poor so bought the
Gen 1 Nano and loved it. I didn't think I could love it
more until...the Nike+ sportskit came out. Wow! Extra value.

I bought a Red Nano for HS graduation. Price point is affordable for that kind of present.

I don't like the smaller new gen Nanos. Wish they had the older design still. I would buy another since mine is getting beat up after all my runs. I'm on a second Nike+ kit. Those need to be designed with more mileage in mind.
