Comments on: Apple getting ready for 'product transition'

Sometime over the next few months, it will be out with the old and in with the new at Apple. But what's in store: new iPods, new Macs, or something else altogether?

Penguinisto: the Air competes against nothing. It's a niche machine that appeals to the fashion and style freaks of this world; no one in the 'puter biz is as adept as Apple in catering to that corner of the marketplace. The gearhead geeks at Sony and anyone else are ill-suited to go after this market, simply because they don't UNDERSTAND this consumer segment, no matter how feather-thin or micro small they make their offerings. I've used their gear, and I can easily bellow that they're at best suited for gadget geeks (with deep pockets), and not the slave-to-trend types.

How about a recall of all of the iPhone 3G products sold to date since their 3G hardware is faulty. You can say it is AT&T until you are blue in the face but the same iPhone 3G product is having the same issues on other country's 3G systems so there is one common denominator, the iPhone 3G.
Having an electronics engineering background and working with both embedded controllers and RF it appears that this issue is much more than just a Firmware fix, rather it appears that either the 3G transceiver Apple chose was a poor one or not properly implemented (possibly for battery life). It could also be the antenna, but I really doubt that.
This recall is going to require a rework of the 3G subsystem as it appears that either it's signal to noise ratio is really low or the front end sensitivity of the 3G receiver is low or noisey. Either scenario would cause all the complaints that have been voiced.

This could have a devastating effect on Apple's bottom line and could even push back other new product announcements. That is when Apple finally owns up to the issue.

Feel free to bash this response but the truth always prevails.

Have you thought of the Apple TV. Apple should give this product away. The money is in the film and music business not the equipment.

Maybe they will finally die!!!!!!!!! It took too long for apple to come around to real world thinking. Well almost. The only thing good about a mac is that it is based on linux. otherwise their OS really sucks. The only good mac is a McDonalds BigMac!!!!!!!!!

I have the same question as collegestoleallmymoney. I'm finishing college and ready to get a new laptop, probably a Macbook. If a new version is going to be for sale soon, I definitely want to wait for it. I got screwed before buying an iPod classic weeks before the iPod video came out. Any advice from you guys?

If Apple wants to wean people off click wheel iPods and go all-flash, they're going to have to get into the 64 and 128 Gig capacity range. I like being able to put every song I own on my 80 Gig 5th gen iPod, which I can't do with a 32 Gig model. 32 Gig is a lot, but it's not everything. 64 I could barely fit, whereas 128 would give me enough breathing room to use all the other features. For me, 128 will be the turning point for an upgrade. Until then, I'm happy with what I already have.

Rumors have been propagating through several popular Mac blogs that Apple will be releasing a red iPhone 3G model for the holiday season. The release will be well-timed, considering the initial iPhone hype will start to slow, and people will be opening up their wallets more for the holiday season. (Photo via MacBlogz)

The red iPhone will presumably be sold as part of the (PRODUCT) RED campaign, a charitable organization that donates money to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. Apple has released several products for this campaign previously, including (PRODUCT) RED iTunes gift cards, a red 8GB iPod Nano, and a red 1GB iPod Shuffle.

Apple has introduced the next Mac OS X installment ("Snow Leopard"); which is geared to improve Leopard, and not to give it a facelift (Tiger --> Leopard).

Knowing this, I am willing to guess that the "product transition" will likely include companions and/or improvements (which can also include price changes) to existing Apple products.

I'm really hoping it's the tablet MacBook. I know some people think tablet PC's are useless, but believe me that they are pretty useful once you start using them.

"The trouble with that theory is that there doesn't seem to be any real reason for Apple to change the pricing of the Mac at this point: the company just sold the highest number of Macs in a quarter in its history. Price doesn't seem to be an object to sales, so why take the margin hit?"

How can anyone seriously say this? Apple wants to keep growing, and in order to do that, it's best to keep updating. They've sold more iPods now than ever and it is because they are changing their lineup all the time.

I think all of Apple will be undergoing major changes. Not just one or two products. So that includes tons of minor updates and price drops. Also the company will be the same.
