Comments on: Apple getting ready for 'product transition'
Sometime over the next few months, it will be out with the old and in with the new at Apple. But what's in store: new iPods, new Macs, or something else altogether?

Web sites launch all the time, but they also shut their doors. We highlight 15 that bit the dust this year.
Let the debate begin: Was the iPhone more important than iTunes? Was anything bigger than Google finding a great business model? CNET offers its list of the 10 most important stories of the '00s.
At the start of the 21st century, there's no tech outfit more influential than Apple. CNET News' Erica Ogg and other reporters will attempt to make sense of the rumors, hype, products, and people that will shape the future of the company. But Apple's not the only game in town, as the established cell phone companies and others strike back against the iPhone. E-mail Erica at erica.ogg@cnet.com.

Having an electronics engineering background and working with both embedded controllers and RF it appears that this issue is much more than just a Firmware fix, rather it appears that either the 3G transceiver Apple chose was a poor one or not properly implemented (possibly for battery life). It could also be the antenna, but I really doubt that.
This recall is going to require a rework of the 3G subsystem as it appears that either it's signal to noise ratio is really low or the front end sensitivity of the 3G receiver is low or noisey. Either scenario would cause all the complaints that have been voiced.
This could have a devastating effect on Apple's bottom line and could even push back other new product announcements. That is when Apple finally owns up to the issue.
Feel free to bash this response but the truth always prevails.
The red iPhone will presumably be sold as part of the (PRODUCT) RED campaign, a charitable organization that donates money to the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa. Apple has released several products for this campaign previously, including (PRODUCT) RED iTunes gift cards, a red 8GB iPod Nano, and a red 1GB iPod Shuffle.
Knowing this, I am willing to guess that the "product transition" will likely include companions and/or improvements (which can also include price changes) to existing Apple products.

- "The trouble with that theory is that there doesn't seem to be any real reason for Apple to change the pricing of the Mac at this point: the company just sold the highest number of Macs in a quarter in its history. Price doesn't seem to be an object to sales, so why take the margin hit?"

Showing 3 of 3 pages (80 Comments)How can anyone seriously say this? Apple wants to keep growing, and in order to do that, it's best to keep updating. They've sold more iPods now than ever and it is because they are changing their lineup all the time.
I think all of Apple will be undergoing major changes. Not just one or two products. So that includes tons of minor updates and price drops. Also the company will be the same.
