Web sites launch all the time, but they also shut their doors. We highlight 15 that bit the dust this year.
Let the debate begin: Was the iPhone more important than iTunes? Was anything bigger than Google finding a great business model? CNET offers its list of the 10 most important stories of the '00s.
At the start of the 21st century, there's no tech outfit more influential than Apple. CNET News' Erica Ogg and other reporters will attempt to make sense of the rumors, hype, products, and people that will shape the future of the company. But Apple's not the only game in town, as the established cell phone companies and others strike back against the iPhone. E-mail Erica at erica.ogg@cnet.com.

If the store drops the price of the TV to $3000 next week, who cares??? Is it the store's fault for charging me $4000? Absolutely not! It's my fault for not waiting. The store doesn't owe me a thing. And I have no right to be upset at them for not letting me alter a physical transaction after it has taken place.
This is one of the most illogical moves that Apple has ever made as a company. I'm very disappointed in them.
It's true. iPhone owners did get screwed but they're at fault. If you rush out to get something without thinking about the fact that you're getting into, say a 2 year contract with a company not known for the best and least expensive service, then you pay the price of you're ignorance.
You get what you pay for and sometimes you pay too much for what you get.
My 2cents take it or leave it. personnaly I'm laughing my ass off cause I get my phones free. call me cheap but atleast if I loose/break it I'm not out $700.
Don't cry you got the hype, and also high on the I got it the first day thing. It is called OCD or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, you'll soon move on to another target, until your credit cards reach the top.
- "Every company drops prices."
- "Why isn't Microsoft giving out credits to their Zune customers?"
What the hell is wrong with everyone here? NO COMPANY ON THIS PLANT drops a price on a bleeding edge product 2 MONTHS after it's introduction. They only do so when:
1. They have a new model that REPLACES the old one (and no the iTouch does not REPLACE the iPhone -- there's no phone in the iTouch stupid.)
2. A competitor comes out with a better product for the same or less price. Hmmm... I'd love to believe this is true here but it's not.
3. They aren't moving enough product (IOW they screwed up on the pricing.) Ding! Ding! Ding!
Jobs and crew flat out screwed up on the pricing of the iPhone. Unlike Sony and the P$3 they were making a huge profit on each model so it was any easy call to make the price dump.
They just put themselves at odds with their fanbois so just pat them on the head an take more of their money since you can't get much from the Apple store for under $100. If they really meant they were sorry they would have let them apply the credit to the iTunes store. Since they've got the fanbois locked in on iTunes they know they are gonna get that money anyway so why not force the fanbois to drop a few more bucks on Apple (or never use the credit but still get the trust back for nothing). Jobs is quite the snake oil salesman! Absolute genious in taking advantage of his best customers and bilking them for more money! And I though Microsoft was evil!
Oh and how long has the Zune been out???? It's about damn time they drop the price on that turd.
Please people just listen to yourselves...
going in and the iPhone is worth every penny of the $599 I paid
for it. Nice gesture even if few will appreciate it.
Those complaining about the phone services need to get a clue.
The coverage in my area is good so no complaint of dropped
calls.
I don't worry about SMS messages because I set up a plan ahead
of time. I'm pretty sure everybody gets the same options as I do.
I chose the plan where you get 300 SMS messages a month
without being charged any extra. I send about 20 tops. All calls
in the US are free to and from as long as I don't go over my
minutes. Web surfing is included and I can surf 24 hours a day 7
days a week if I want for no extra charge. I had AT&T before I
purchased the iPhone so adding all of that costs me $25 more a
month.
I know from years of experience that if you plan on calling
internationally often at all that you had better have an
International calling plan in place before calling. You must set
that up in advance or you will pay through the nose. It will
probably be a small monthly charge and then charge by the
minute at a much smaller per minute charge than if you didn't
have the plan. This has nothing to do with the iPhone and ALL
phone companies have similar plans, but if you don't set it up
you will get screwed. Don't blame Apple.
Stupid is as stupid does.
"I'm going to pay $11 for it. And 6 months from now, when it's at the cheap seats for $2, I'm going to call Universal Studios and demand that they give me $9 back."
This is not the same comparison. $11 is much more disposable than $600. 2 Months is a lot less time than 6 months. Your comparison does not scale and if flawed.
Let see... There's new, fancy quad-ply toilet paper that came out 4 months ago. It costs about the same as any other toilet paper out there. When can I expect a price drop? Oh! I get it! toilet paper and the iPhone are not the same and I can't expect their prices to trend the same! Duh...
That has me thinking.... Hmmm... I wonder how many Apple fanbois it takes to wipe Steve Job's ass for him? :)
You see what you are going to buy :-)
about being the target of sleezy price gouging. The Nuevo PC
using ipod owners are used to lowclass marketing scams. I am
going to get my full iphone price returned to my pocket by not
renewing my over-priced .mac account. And with the $100
severance credit, buying a non-apple product.
The unconditional love I had for apple is gone, I feel my loyalty
was inappropriately used and the severence pay of $100 store
credit for my 20 years of apple promoting is just another
marketing trick to hook another sale out of me. They appear to
have joined the ranks of Motorola and the mainstream corporate
shark mentality killing off the trustworthy company that made
Apple special and high quality. Now it is just another
untrustworthy computer store out to trick its customers into
spending more money instead of letting the quality product sell
itself without the games.
Apple Classic vs. the tricks of M.S. Apple
1998 imac $1299........7/07 iphone $599
2007 imac $1199........9/07 iphone $399
We need to open 2 new companies: Apple classic (see left
column above) for Mac-users who want to continue to pay a
premium for a consistent, quality product and customer
treatment. and M.S. Apple for the PC ipod users who have
adapted to, and sheepishly accepted the deceptive bait and
switch tactics of mainstream low quality tech companies.
By premeditating the blatant misuse of customer loyalty, it looks
like apple is choosing to follow the latter path. Break-ups are
hard to do, but Im finding it easier everyday to not tell a PC user
at the airport how to reduce his suffering by getting a Mac.
