Some reports on Friday claim that Apple admitted in a tech note to having heat issues with the iPhone 3GS, but that's just not true.

And Windows fans will never admit that a single Apple product could be any good.
by lazycat202 July 3, 2009 11:54 AM PDT
Apple and Windows products are good. If you're a high-end user (who wants to stay ahead of the game), know how to "warez", "tweaking" techniques, you wouldn't own Iphone. I still can't find a single point that would convince me buying an Iphone.

accidentally, I left my HTC Touch Pro2 in my car (outside air: 97, inside should be more than 105) for 2 hours. When I pulled it out, it just still worked. Ran full length movies (while bluetooth is ON) and it didn't get hot.

Just don't ever think Iphone is the best device out there!
by ckh1272 July 4, 2009 5:06 AM PDT
@ lazycat202-- I really hate to split hairs here, but where in your car did you leave it. My 5th Gen. iPod stays in my car a lot (hot or cold) and it has never stopped working, but I leave it in the glove compartment (which is big difference temp. wise). You don't say where you leave your HTC. If you left it on your dash, for example, then consider yourself lucky, because if it is 97 degrees outside, then it is right at 117 degrees on that dash. At that temperature, for two hours, just about any electrical device would be toast.

@ddesy: Why do you say windows fans will never admit that any apple prodcuts are good? I'm a huge windows fan. I can't stand using macs.

That said, I'm a huge iPhone fan and can't stand the windows mobile phones.

I'm sure there are tons of people like me. Just because you like the iphone doesn't make you a Windows hater and vice versa.
by codynews July 4, 2009 8:34 AM PDT
@lazycat: Wrong. I know all about 'warez' and other hacking garbage. I like my iphone because it's the best phone by far (also a heavy windows user)
by johnqh July 3, 2009 7:42 AM PDT
There may be some story in this.

Are all (or some) of the overheating iPhones jailbroken? That can be the direct cause. They have some background apps running 24/7, causing the front apps to slow, battery to drain and device to overheat.

I read somewhere that Safari start up time is 2X longer on a jailbroken iPhone. That indicates the background apps are using serious CPU cycles.

No it indicates that apple needs to fix the damn multi tasking problem.
EVERY FREAKING SMART PHONE SHOULD MULTI TASK.
Its really easy to throw that out there, but you know what.
The Iphone should be able to run any application on its system, even if it uses 100% cpu.
by Vegaman_Dan July 4, 2009 12:10 AM PDT
OS 3.0 jailbreak was just released today, but the problems with overheating have been present since the release of the 3GS device. This time you can truly discount jailbreaking as a cause.

So iPhone users have to put a thermometer next to there mobile phone to make sure its not going to over heat. Thats basically what Apple is suggesting customers do. Clearly the iPhone has over heating problems or Apple would not have made any statement.

"So iPhone users have to put a thermometer next to there mobile phone to make sure its not going to over heat. Thats basically what Apple is suggesting customers do" By all means, please point out where Apple says to do that. Oh wait, you can't. Now go take your FUD elsewhere.
by queticomn July 3, 2009 10:19 AM PDT
Point being, now people need worry about their phone overheating? As if most of us do not all ready have enough? Its a phone, it should not over heat.
by Vegaman_Dan July 4, 2009 12:12 AM PDT
@The_Happy_Switcher:

The iPhone is experiencing overheating issues. This is fact. It doesn't matter that you are displeased by this or you hope by calling anyone who reports this as spreading FUD. Even Apple itself acknowledged the issue- but you don't seem to be accusing Apple of FUD tactics.

The concept of a double standard comes to mind, as does the term hypocrite. Consider them when posting.
by The_happy_switcher July 3, 2009 9:10 AM PDT
You guys who have never used/tried an iphone sure seem to have a lot of hate/anger. Clue fairy here: It's a PHONE, get it? YOU are not required to have one. SOME of us do like to use it. Ask yourselves why you are expending so much energy to convince others when those OTHERS are not going to listen to your hateful/pointless remarks? It's another gadget, albeit popular one. You are NOT preaching to the choir here so go vent somewhere else your pointless drivel.

@The_happy_switcher--Because that is what they get paid to do. Typically, when someone's life sucks, they tend to lash out at everyone else so much, that need a diaper change when they're done (which explains their posting on the Pampers website complaining that their diapers don't keep them from sh--ing themselves).

In case you didn't know, people actually try to use this site to get the news.
If you want to get the news from apple they have a great pr site and company ran forums.
You think that everyone who points out the scratch on your phone is doing it because they are envious?
What does that say about you?
Always remember Iphones are the minority, and definitely not news.
in the time it took you to read this pr story you could have read real news like
"Bluetooth "Big Brother" tracks festival-goers"
by Vegaman_Dan July 4, 2009 12:16 AM PDT
@The_happy_switcher:

Take a chill pill- you're getting too worked up over a simple phone.

I'm sorry that your choice of holy device is having issues and you don't want to acknowledge the reality of the situation, but that's just what it is- it's just a phone and it's overheating. Don't worry about it. Apple will probably do something about it later.

It's ironic that you are lashing out so loudly about people complaining... by complaining your self in the very same manner.

But in the end, it's just a phone. My Apple Touch also gets very hot in extended use. Big deal.
by Hellcat July 3, 2009 11:44 AM PDT
From what I hear people aren't able to make calls on it because its to hot. I also hear that it happens to some iphones that only had apps that were on the 3G which didn't make the 3G hot. Apple saying if it gets hot don't use until it cools off is just bad. Sure I have to make business calls "I'll talk to you later boss my iphone is to hot to talk to you", great. This is a fault of Apple they sold so many phones that they don't want to make a recall. And Apple fanboys just say "Ok master whatever you say". If my phone heated up to hot for me to use you know I'd be making a stink about it.

Ok here you go

http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/06/iphone-3gs-handsets-overheat-turn-brown/

So don't use your GPS or play games because you may get burned. Especially don't use the phone in the car. I'm waiting for the batteries to explode then Apple will take note.
by Vegaman_Dan July 4, 2009 12:18 AM PDT
@Perry_Clease:

Well, you asked for a link, you got one. It's just Wired, but you can also find threads on Apple's forum about the same issue. They tend to get deleted but new ones pop up quickly enough to replace them. Google or Bing for 3G S overheating and you'll find plenty of reports.

OK for us Brits, its rarely sunny here. A bit disappointing if you're Californian though. Do they supply an atlas for use on sunny days ?

As a layman, I can tell you, I switched from 20+ years of PC's and PC PDA's to MAC's and Iphones about 12 months ago.

I was sold, awesome devices and very very clever.... BUT....

For the last 6 months I feel I have gone back to my MS days. The Iphone updates are buggy as are the updates from 10.5.7 on the MAC. There are no excuses, these problems were supposed to be relegated to the PC world but the truth is, Apple, now it has to support a lot more users and a ton more backwards compatibility issues. I still think my decision to swtich to Apple and the many $$ I've spent I think are justified but I am putting this warnign out there. As a 20+ year PC geek, Apple should listen to it's base. I for one do not like my Apple not coming up when I open the lid. I do not like my bluetooth mouse disconnecting itself at random. I do not like my Iphone eating battery. I do not like the fact it does not multi-task (A cop out to prevent crashes perhaps!). I do not like the fact that many of the problems I see int eh Apple forums, I see first hand for myself but the Apple bigots who won't hear a bad word said, whom don't seem to have the problem, seem to think the rest of us make stuff up.

Apple. Listen. QA you software. Start Alpha trials and start listening and talking openly. Failure to do so, will guarantee to lose my support some time, in he future.

I can already predict Apple's response to your observations and requests:

"Meh."

Apple isn't exactly known for being either open or listening to customer feedback/input.

Dude, now you're just being silly. So when Apple put firewire back on their lower priced laptops, they weren't listening to their customers?? Get a grip man!

I don't think many people were asking for it back. Hell I don't know anyone who even uses it.

There are no problems with any apple products.
The apple laptops don't explode, and the nvidia chips they used on their laptops didn't suffer the same bump problems that every nvidia chip did.
Because its apple they dont have design flaws, its all part of the show here.
Nothing to see here, how about some real news now?
while you guys were reading this lame article, or was it a marketing campaign?
you would have read "HDD shortages to continue " in other places that really cover the news....................

and...

Remember, the more we demand out of our portable devices, the more issues are going to pop up regarding heat. I don't care what brand, Apple, Palm, RIM, they are all vulnerable to this problem. We should still make sure that these companies are aware off any unusual behaviors with their products. Stay informed.

You will notice the temp. suggestion is in line with just about every other electronics manufacturer. 35C is 95F. Pretty much standard fare. Don't believe me? Read any electronics manual and look it up.

My iPhone 3G gets warm when doing intense activity like watching a video or surfing the web for long time and so on. Nothing to get worked up about and I have definitely not got burned or suffered from an exploding iPhone. I am not sure how these rumors get out.

I do not own an Iphone 3Gs yet but I will have one within the next couple of weeks. I passed on the 1st generation and went with a G1 over the 3G. I still have my G1 and prefer T-mobile to ATT. The 3gS is a compelling enough device to have me give ATT a shot.

With that said on to the heat issues. These phones may have trouble in EXTREME heat. What is surprising about that. You have taken a 600mhz processor which could be found just a few years ago in a laptop computer and put it in a device about the size of the palm of your hand. I left my Dell work laptop in the trunk of my car and got on a plane and left Michigan on vacation for a week. When I returned it was 5 degrees below zero. I took my laptop in plugged it into a wall outlet and let it get to room temperature (30-40 minutes) it booted right up. If it wouldn't have that would not have been Dell's fault it would have been my for leaving it in a cold trunk for a week (bonehead move yes I know).

Current electronics like anything else has its limitations. They have become so few that now some have the unrealistic expectation that everything will be perfect. Try not to leave that 500-600 cell phone in the 150 degree car over the weekend or in the trunk of a car when its 5 degrees below zero and if you do blame yourself not the device!

No honey........I smart enough not to own a iphone......But apple sure is covering up again. This is why Dont trust apple these days..... I look at this................way You get what you pay for when you by apple. It will break or told its your fault within the life of that device. If it beaks in2 years so be it. Thats what I think of apple these days. Thats why i dont own a apple computer as well these days.

I am not saying that Apple is perfect by any means, but any time I have had an issue, they have been top notch in helping me resolve the issue. If you don't own anything by Apple, then how can you make a statement like that? It comes off sounding like you are just trying to whitewash the issue by making general assumptions based on what you read on blogs (which are just so reliable these days <sarcasm>). There are always going to be issues with any consumer product. The biggest deal to me is always how those issues get handled. Considering this phone has only been out a few weeks (The 3Gs model, that is), it seems at least a little hasty to jump down Apple's throat like that.
by play7 July 6, 2009 2:22 AM PDT
Lucky indeed.........but how long will it last..... :/
by ckh1272 July 5, 2009 7:30 AM PDT
@play7--Also, my history with Apple includes a 1st gen. Macbookpro that is more than 3 years old and gets used everyday, a 5th gen. iPod (also 3+ years old) that gets used everyday, a 8 year old iBook that is 8 years old and still kicking, and a ten year old G3 tower that is still being used to this day, without any problems! I even had a dreaded Performa 6320 AV (circa 1995), that I sold two years ago, that was still working without a flaw (the TV tuner and remote even still worked without a hitch).
