roundup From Firefox to IE and from Chrome to Opera and Safari, there's no sitting still for browser makers looking to keep their products fresh and competitive.
The next generation of 4G wireless may get all the headlines, but advanced 3G technology will likely dominate services for the next few years.
At the start of the 21st century, there's no tech outfit more influential than Apple. CNET News' Erica Ogg and other reporters will attempt to make sense of the rumors, hype, products, and people that will shape the future of the company. But Apple's not the only game in town, as the established cell phone companies and others strike back against the iPhone. E-mail Erica at erica.ogg@cnet.com.

As an iPhone owner, I don't have a problem with the Pre. I think it is a great device with a lot of promise, but it is no iPhone. What I do have a problem with, is when Palm Fanboys try to say that the Pre is superior. It obviously is not.
Thanks for commenting on mis-information. Do some reading.
I own a Pre and I love it, albeit it's not quite perfected yet. Remember, this is only the first iteration of the phone. The Iphone is in it's third generation, so it's had a lot more time to correct things from the first 2 versions. Don't get me wrong, the Iphone is currently the best phone out there but now phones like the Pre are making others step up their game. There are many brilliant people working @ Apple so I wouldn't ever expect anything subpar. Heck, the guy responsible for the Ipod is now Palm's CEO.
Even though a public sdk isn't out yet, there are 10,000 developers currently with the sdk so the Pre app catalog will be filling up shortly.
Like others on this forum, I wish all phones to do well. It keeps the marketplace competitive and without competition we wouldn't be seeing so much evolution in the handset realm. Can't wait to see the Nokia with the Intel chip. That'll be a heck of a phone.
PS My sons Pre just came in and he has already downloaded 200 songs from Itunes and still has 6.5 GB's to go. and he loves texting, emailing, using Facebook, Myspace and Aim all at the same time. I keep telling him he will have Carpal Tunnel (SP) syndrome by the time he's 17 and just laughs.
PSS. Keyboard is great, even for my large fingers. Could it be bigger? Yes, but I prefer it to the screens keyboard (whatever they call it).
Again congrats Iphone on the review.
You want to listen to YOUR music on the iPhone while doing other things? Use the IPOD feature. Not good enough? Give ooTunes a shot thru the Safari web browser (tied to your desktop media) and do what you want while your music selection in the background - I do this with local radio stations!. Even Slacker has gotten better with picking up where it left off in a song when interrupted by a phone call.
When you look at what the Carriers and the Mobile Phone companies foisted on to their "millions" of users with crippled hardware/software/exorbitant prices for data access/games/programs for as long as they did, Apple has done us a favor in showing that we do not have to put up with CRAP for mobility.
No Apple fan boy here - I have 5 systems running windoze, 2 running a variation of Linux and one running ESXi; two PowerPC based G3/G4's and finally, an Intel based Mac. Everything has it's niche.
But only one multimedia device that happens to make phone calls. Skype anyone?
Also, keyboard is a big issue for some. Some just don't like touchscreens for typing, advantage pre. Some don't mind a touchscreen and prefer a bigger screen, advantage iphone. Personally, I like the Pre. But it all comes down to the fact that I hated AT&T when I was there, and pay a lot less with Sprint (with actually more features) with much better coverage. Also because I love a tactile keyboard.

- Both devices (I wouldn't call either a phone) are terrible when it comes to the simple task of making a phone call. Hand either device to your mother or someone who has never used the device and see how long it takes from them to figure out how to make a call. Smartphones have developed to the point where the basic phone call has become irrelavant. Its all about goofy applications, internet access, and text messaging. I'm reduced to carrying two devices, the iphone for the net and email and a cheapo basic phone to make calls with having to go to menus, home screens, etc...
