You can surf and be on a call only when connected to wifi. This is a limitation of Sprint's network. On the iPhone, you don't have to be connected to wifi. The first iPhone was also like this.

As an iPhone owner, I don't have a problem with the Pre. I think it is a great device with a lot of promise, but it is no iPhone. What I do have a problem with, is when Palm Fanboys try to say that the Pre is superior. It obviously is not.

It is actually a limitation of sprint, not their network. CDMA is capable of doing such things, but sprint has it crippled to not do it.

Consumer reports may think twice now that the many of Apples mobile phones are over heating.

There is not a problem with over heating. That was a false report. There are NO reports of "over-heating" by 3GS users. Rather it has been reported that the new iPhone 3GS runs "hotter" than the previous models, which was expected due to increased speed and battery life.

Thanks for commenting on mis-information. Do some reading.

It's really funny seeing you guys go back and forth as to which phone reigns supreme. I haven't seen this kind of exchange since the election:-)

I own a Pre and I love it, albeit it's not quite perfected yet. Remember, this is only the first iteration of the phone. The Iphone is in it's third generation, so it's had a lot more time to correct things from the first 2 versions. Don't get me wrong, the Iphone is currently the best phone out there but now phones like the Pre are making others step up their game. There are many brilliant people working @ Apple so I wouldn't ever expect anything subpar. Heck, the guy responsible for the Ipod is now Palm's CEO.

Even though a public sdk isn't out yet, there are 10,000 developers currently with the sdk so the Pre app catalog will be filling up shortly.

Like others on this forum, I wish all phones to do well. It keeps the marketplace competitive and without competition we wouldn't be seeing so much evolution in the handset realm. Can't wait to see the Nokia with the Intel chip. That'll be a heck of a phone.

I'm with you sean, all I keep hearing are people bashing the 1st generation pre. My friend and I comared our phones (he has 16 or 32gb IPhone not sure and I have the pre). We both liked each others phones for different reasons. Both of the phones were fast, he liked my "deck of cards" and I liked how many apps he had, though he claims never to use them and spends too much money. When I told him that my plan included unlimited data, texting, Sprint navigator, and family locator (for my 3 kids), 6pm nights and weekends and 1500 min. for about 205$ a month he was kind of Pi$$ed that he pays 200 for just 2 Iphones texting and apps. But all in all competition is great for all of us with the phones as they will only get better for the consumer. Plans will get cheaper, reception will only get better. So stop bashing each others phones and give them their due, they are all getting better and thats good for all of us...

PS My sons Pre just came in and he has already downloaded 200 songs from Itunes and still has 6.5 GB's to go. and he loves texting, emailing, using Facebook, Myspace and Aim all at the same time. I keep telling him he will have Carpal Tunnel (SP) syndrome by the time he's 17 and just laughs.

PSS. Keyboard is great, even for my large fingers. Could it be bigger? Yes, but I prefer it to the screens keyboard (whatever they call it).

Again congrats Iphone on the review.

OK I have been a Sprint customer for 10 years and bought a Treo last summer - junk, plain and simple. After a big blow out with Sprint sat in a Best Buy with a Storm in one hand and an iPhone in the other. After about an hour, walked out with 2 iphones and just upgraded to the 3.0 software. I was really hoping the Pre would be a killer phone because I have a awesome plan with Sprint that they don't offer anymore combined. I still have Sprint, I keep it for the kids. But the iPhones just rock, I love having them after 10 years of Sprint phones.

Wow... having once carried an mp3 player, a portable video player, a cell phone, a PDA, a game boy and just knew surfing the web mobile was a total waste of time - not to mention trying to keep all of those things charged and ready!, I now have my 3rd iPhone (yet all three remain in the family) and I carry ONE device. That is the nirvana I was looking for and Apple hit it on the head, not once but 3TIMES and keeps driving the nail deeper on each strike. Yea, AT&T has known to suck, but every one knows someone who is not happy with their carrier. These things have limitations/networks have limitations (some real, some artificial - MMS anyone?) but you work inside those limitation and move on.

You want to listen to YOUR music on the iPhone while doing other things? Use the IPOD feature. Not good enough? Give ooTunes a shot thru the Safari web browser (tied to your desktop media) and do what you want while your music selection in the background - I do this with local radio stations!. Even Slacker has gotten better with picking up where it left off in a song when interrupted by a phone call.

When you look at what the Carriers and the Mobile Phone companies foisted on to their "millions" of users with crippled hardware/software/exorbitant prices for data access/games/programs for as long as they did, Apple has done us a favor in showing that we do not have to put up with CRAP for mobility.

No Apple fan boy here - I have 5 systems running windoze, 2 running a variation of Linux and one running ESXi; two PowerPC based G3/G4's and finally, an Intel based Mac. Everything has it's niche.

But only one multimedia device that happens to make phone calls. Skype anyone?

You people arguing about these two phones are rediculous. They both have their issues... The big one for the Pre seems to be the inability to browse and talk at the same time on 3G. No offense to iphone users, but that is also a downfall of the AT&T network, not because it can't do it, but because the locations TO DO IT are extremely spotty. AT&T is consistantly blasted for it's horrible 3G coverage. So I guess it is great for people in cities, not at all for people who use AT&T's edge network outside of them.
Also, keyboard is a big issue for some. Some just don't like touchscreens for typing, advantage pre. Some don't mind a touchscreen and prefer a bigger screen, advantage iphone. Personally, I like the Pre. But it all comes down to the fact that I hated AT&T when I was there, and pay a lot less with Sprint (with actually more features) with much better coverage. Also because I love a tactile keyboard.

Both devices (I wouldn't call either a phone) are terrible when it comes to the simple task of making a phone call. Hand either device to your mother or someone who has never used the device and see how long it takes from them to figure out how to make a call. Smartphones have developed to the point where the basic phone call has become irrelavant. Its all about goofy applications, internet access, and text messaging. I'm reduced to carrying two devices, the iphone for the net and email and a cheapo basic phone to make calls with having to go to menus, home screens, etc...
