Web sites launch all the time, but they also shut their doors. We highlight 15 that bit the dust this year.
Let the debate begin: Was the iPhone more important than iTunes? Was anything bigger than Google finding a great business model? CNET offers its list of the 10 most important stories of the '00s.
At the start of the 21st century, there's no tech outfit more influential than Apple. CNET News' Erica Ogg and other reporters will attempt to make sense of the rumors, hype, products, and people that will shape the future of the company. But Apple's not the only game in town, as the established cell phone companies and others strike back against the iPhone. E-mail Erica at erica.ogg@cnet.com.

To set the record straight.
PC's sold about 70 million computers in Q2 2009. Vs 2.2 million for mac.
Now it is predicted that 270 million pcs for 2009. Apple might get around 8 to 10 million sales.

There are three types of lies, white lies, damn lies, and statistics. Mr Dalrymple, you are lying.
I mean after all did not apple see a 16 percent decrease in feb, while pc saw a 22 percent increase? I could have swore I read that some where.

I know it will come to me sooner or later.
Oh and those numbers are year over year. Not your very selected month to month, stuff.
Oh hope, oh pray, oh lie.
also I wonder if Lexus/BMW are worried about GM Ford and chysler
because they sell about 40 times more cars !
Hmm dont think so !
Look up the marketshare nos for computers above 1000$
and you'll quickly see that Mac marketshare isnt as isignificant as PC fanboys make them to be
You say-"I mean after all did not apple see a 16 percent decrease in feb, while pc saw a 22 percent increase? I could have swore I read that some where.'
But then you say--"Oh and those numbers are year over year. Not your very selected month to month, stuff."
Which point are you trying to make exactly, especially pulling an article form "boygenius"? That was good for some laughs! It sounds like, to me, that you need to keep YOUR lies straight. Oh hope, oh pray, oh whatever!
Here's a prediction....When Windows 7 comes out this fall it will drive PC sales.
Apple commands around 6% of the total marketshare - Windows based PCs have around 92%. These percentages have the same base: the total base of active units. That means that if we assume around a billion PCs (which is false since we know there are over a billion PCs just running Windows), 920M of them are running Windows, 60M are Macs (and that doesn't even jive up with Apple's own stated numbers - they claimed 75M users - but then admitted that 40M of those were iPhone/iPod touch users - which makes the Mac's actual market share closer to 3.5% - but let's not quibble over a few percents.
To increase their market share by 25%, Apple only needs to sell 15M new Macs.
On the other hand for ALL the rest of the PC makers collectively to do the same (and let's not miss this - you've lumped all the other PC makers into one fictional entity by doing this comparison - a more realistic one would be to compare several individual companies), they would have to sell 230M - just over 15 times as many.
Comparing rates of change between two different bases overstates one and understates the other. It makes it sound like the two accomplishments are equivalent when they are not.
It's just a matter of time -- Mac will eventually reclaim market share.
If Apple still show growth like this next year then you might have something.
My job i see at least 300 PC no Mac. Now holla lol
That statement has been made for the last ten years or so and Apple has slowly been moving up during that time. What has to happen before you change that tired old statement?
Apple US Mac Sales Down 16%, Windows PC Sales up 22%

During these financially dire times, it's always interesting to keep en eye on the sales figures of computes, to see if the downward trend is still running. Sales figures from February analysed by NPD indicate that while Mac sales went down, sales of Windows PCs went up. Mind, though, that these figures are US-only.
The cold hard figures are clear. February sales in the US of Apple Macintosh computers went down 16%, while sales of Windows-based computers went up 22%. In the laptop department, Apple's sales dropped 7%, while Windows-based laptop sales increased by 36%. Netbooks play an important role here, since if you take the netbooks out of the total figures, Windows laptop sales went up "only" 16%. The figures are all year-over-year, so February 2009 is compared with February 2008.
Here is my take: First- the only reason Apple is still around is that so many school children were forced to use Apple products when Apple practically gave computers to schools (I've met many people who only know Apple computers because of their exposure to them in elementary/middle/high school experience.)
Second - Apple finally got their systems somewhat reliable after the release of System 10.3 (hardware and software) Prior to this the Macs I used crashed daily - and I mean daily.
Third - I feel the public is less wary of Apple now that they are using industry standard (PC) Intel chips to run their machines.
Any other gains are from their misleading advertising. Like I said - I use both platforms daily.
A G4 with 2GB of ram (just received a MacPro with 16GB) and an HP with dual-core and 4 GB ram running Vista Home Premium (no problems - though I like XP better - I run that on my AMD powered - 4 year old Compaq laptop with 2 GB ram.
The world of PCs have become like any other appliance - personal preference - Funny I don't see these argument over washing machines or flat screen TVs - though some gearheads still argue over which japanese/American cars are better tuners.
Like I said... slow day today
I'd like to hear more discussion on whether Mac's are becoming more "interesting" in the non-EDU markets. Are we beginning to see businesses realize that the total cost of ownership (TCO) of a Mac with a normally accepted usable lifespan of ~6 years is more economical than a PC which is replaced every 2-3 years? That corporations are waking up to the reality that owning a Mac-based enterprise will cost them significantly less over time than a comparable PC one?
The whole culture of "PCs = throwaway technology" and "Mac = long term investment" is beginning to catch on as a reasonable way to quit filling up landfills with last-years PC technology. And, a means to rein in IT budgets to getting more value per acquisition and maintenance $/Euro spent. These would be far more meaningful discussions of whether Mac's or PC's are growing market share.
Consider, in the end, if a Mac outlives a PC for usable value by twice as long, and I'm replacing PCs with Mac's at 2.5M per quarter, what has to happen to Mac's presence in the world? And PC's?
Go outside of your little box and look at reality. There are very few people out there who are 100% Mac. Most people who have a Mac also have a PC or they have a copy of Windows on their Mac and use Windows through Mac's Bootstrap. Apple has admitted that 80% of Mac users have a copy of Windows on their Mac.
Apple/Mac is a nich market. It is very good at certain things and other things like software, it is lacking.
Dell's market share is down. People are realizing Dell is crap. HP and Acer's market share is going up mainly because of Netbooks. Sony's market share is going down mainly due to their high cost compared to other manufacturers. Apple is gaining market share mainly due to education sales. Apple has always given computers at a discount to the education systems to gain market share.
If Apple would get off their high horse and create the netbook everyone is wanting, they could take over the market.

- I believe the sales will continue to grow as young people buy more and more apple products all around as this has become as "lifestyle" brand and pc's are uncool. I would be more worried about Netbooks and mini computers in your cell phones ie ---look at all the apps you can get on the apple phone here it comes!

Showing 2 of 2 pages (123 Comments)As a very important note I would like to add that I work professionally in television broadcast and only use mac and mac programs.
I personally have owned 5 apple computers and every single one of them has been great, and worked 99.99% of the time-in fact I just gave my nephew a computer I have had since 1999 and it works like a champ.
In comparison my husband has gone through 4 PC computers/laptops that have had tons of software problems, built like junk and broken down again and again. Even with my tech savy I had to give up and send it out to the shop costing 100's in repairs or throwing it in the garbage. Because of his job my husband is forced to use pc's and windows --an uninspiring, slow, and out of date platform he hates.
Windows is 20 steps behind the mac lifestyle platform that comes installed and ready for take off on the mac....I agree they are more $$$ but I predict they are going to bust out a major new item in 2010...June or January watch out.
