I downloaded my update @ 1:14PM EST, downloaded in a min. Update went on smooth and was able to activate my 2G iPhone without any problems. Of course i miss some features!

I had the same issue, but rebooted my Macbook and got it again, then tried it again and it worked! Server traffic is my guess.

Don't hold your hopes up when you DO get it activated.... The Email is crashing every time. Not sure what to do next... there isn't an "undo a 3.0 upgrade" button... only restore from scratch. Grrr. Am I the only person with email troubles on the new OS?

My email at first wouldn't load anything...as if there was no connection. I deleted and reactivated the email account and that worked.

Had the same problem in NYC. Tried downloading around 1pm Eastern Time and finally was able to activate my phone. Dosen't seem as though it was as bad as last year.

APPLE FAIL. I had the same problem as many others are now appearing to have, which is comforting. I tried to upgrade my brand new 3G iPhone with 3.0 and the download took about 30 mins and then once it finished downloading is when the problems came up. It said that my connection to the iTunes store had timed out and now my iPhone is locked and will only allow emergency calls. Very annoying because I had to go on a business trip and am now without a phone. Will be tweeting about this. Thanks for the troubles, Apple.

When did you buy your iPhone 3G?
by Sporlo June 17, 2009 12:48 PM PDT
It downloaded fine in 5 minutes. But there seems to be bugs in the software itself...
Some settings aren't doing what they're supposed to be doing.

I experienced the same error, kept clicking on the update button and it finally went through after ten minutes.

Had absolutely no problem whatsoever. Was downloaded and updated within 15min. And this is from a first gen 2G phone! It's most likely volume coupled with people having modded phones (my opinion).

My phone is 7 months old, not "modded" and is now totally locked and useless after the download. I really would have thought Apple would have learned their lesson after this same debacle last year (and I'm a long-time Apple devotee!). Very frustrating.

Ok well I did the update for my iphone and got this "An Unknown Error occurred 1604" so no my question is how is apple going to compensate everyone for this issue? Right now my phone is dead...

I guess a question is if people are having problems because they have cracked or jailbroken phones?? If that's the case, you have no one to blame but yourself. If not, a bit of patience should pay off.
by hexjones June 17, 2009 1:12 PM PDT
CannuckComment, My phone is not jailbroken anad I have the same error. I have only Apple to blame for phone being hosed.
by GregMikeS June 17, 2009 8:58 PM PDT
This happened because you don't have the most current version of iTunes downloaded. Delete iTunes and then download iTunes 8.2 from itunes.com. Then reinstall. Bingo Bango.

Nope, now stop crying and grow up.

I started downloading 3.0 at 1:18 and it was all done by 1:34. No problems. Everything works and the new features are great!

I'm using a 1st generation 8 GB phone.

Sorry that some are having troubles! Wonder if it is a local issue? bigger cities - more people - choking up bandwidth?

I live in a medium sized midwestern town and have never had a problem upgrading or downloading even on the busiest days.

I got mine updated (ipod touch) it seems a bit glitchy actually, took forever to connect the bluetooth to my car and the screen keeps freezing a bit, so we'll see how things go.
