I agree with you! This Mac commercials are so lame...you get impression that they were created by group of high school kids! All that money and this is the best they can come up with??? blahhhh

(unrelated to above comment)
the iPhoto one is really stupid because Windows can do that with Windows Live Photo Gallery.
And I didn't get the "Legal Copy" ad.

@jedmmj11

Uhh, no you can't and I'm sorry to hear that; but I wouldn't go runnig around and telling everyone.

@jedmmj11

You seriously don't get the legal copy ad? Seems pretty obvious to me.
by Mark_Anderson April 21, 2009 3:49 PM PDT
@kevinskrause

Actually it does through the people tagging facial recognition feature.

Months before Apple did.

But don't let truth spoil the party.

the Microsoft campaign is good news for Apple
it just re-enforces the Apple message of you get wat you pay for !

these ads may exaggerate a bit
but at least they are funny and entertaining
I personally like the Time machine ad it's hilarious

FYI macs freeze too ,just not as much as Pcs

True, but when you take care of your PC or Mac they never freeze.

Go read the "legal copy" transcript at MacJournals, funny as hell http://www.macjournals.com/news/legalcopytext

Microsoft benefits by these ads in a similar manner. The Apple ads have long since gone past their sell-by dates and the public is a bit... well, desensitized to them. At this point they look more sad than useful.

It's interesting to note that legal copy bit has some items in there that may indeed get Apple into hot water by making claims that are not true in a public venue. Sure, it may have been a joke and meant to be funny, but that isn't the way the FCC sees it when it comes to using the public airwaves for such things. Legal claims may be the result.

@perry
lol! the real Funny part is all the stuff written is true !
but I'm still finding it difficult to believe that these people actually managed to make out the writing ! the things people do sometimes

@blitzboy1120
well not always there always poorly written Drivers
Like my crappy Nvidia 8800 GT graphics card !
by Perry_Clease April 20, 2009 1:23 PM PDT
"lol! the real Funny part is all the stuff written is true !"

Well as Adlai Stevenson said "If they stop telling lies about us we will stop telling the truth about them." :)
by jabberwolf April 20, 2009 5:22 PM PDT
You get what you pay for... exactly trendiness over utility.
Oops that cant be good for Apple!

"well not always there always poorly written Drivers
Like my crappy Nvidia 8800 GT graphics card !"
Yeah thats a horrible card and freezes because of drivers?!
Thats a dam good card and runs in SLI as well, oops Apple has no drivers for that at all.
by seven7dust April 20, 2009 5:36 PM PDT
@jabberwolf
thats good that you see the MS ads in that light !
they are playing just into Apple's book anyway !
eitherway better or worse is a personal choice !

as far as my 8800 GT is concerned
Apple doesn't even use that card in any of their computers
so why would they write anything for it !
it's wat I use in my custom built desktop and it has crashed because of poor drivers and conflicts many times you can guess the O.S and software it runs !
by Vegaman_Dan April 20, 2009 10:07 PM PDT
@Perry_Clease:

Read the transcript for the Apple legal text ad and you'll see the issues brought up. Apple is making some pretty interesting claims there- like computer users don't need to worry about backing up their data more than once a year, clear up hard disk space, or empty the trash can. PC users have to do this, but Mac users do not. That's the sort of thing that can backfire on Apple when they are trying to actively sell their own Back to my Mac service or TimeCapsule.
by XiroMisho April 21, 2009 5:13 AM PDT
Why not check if you're part of that brand new 20,000 Mac PC strong bot net that popped up - you know, with the worm... because Mac's AREN'T SECURE. they just DON'T HAVE VIRUS'S WRITTEN FOR THEM....

YET!

Oh I can't wait for them to start rolling in now... because the pants are down, and the Hackers are starting to realize that all the people who go to Mac have money, money to exploit!

Speaking of usability, PC's are what people are used to which makes it more usable than a Mac..

But in contrast to that, Macs are by far better computers, I'd prefer a Mac any day: virus or no virus.

not true ! my grand mom picked up on a Mac within days of the purchase
they are very similar in most things
but once you get used the OSX interface it's difficult to adjust back to Windows OTOH

the other day I was joking around with my grandma on taking her Mac back
and she literally hugged it and woudnt let go !
I wouldn't have expected the same with the PC she had before

there's just something friendly and inviting about the Mac interface both kids/adults like
it's just like the iPhone vs Windows Mobile argument !
Apple knows UI like no other !

My pops is a 50 year old general manager of a country club and wanted to buy a new computer. We went to best buy to look at PCs and we were looking at a higher end dell and there is a program that shows you the specs of the laptop and what the different things are. The application FROZE! the app that shows you how great it is froze. Hiliarious. So, i have an aluminum macbook and my pops likes how small and light it is so after 2 weeks of working on him, he decided on a mac. After the first week he sold his desktop PC and is planning to buy an imac or mac mini because he said a mac works with him but a pc works against him. He is not tech savy or anything but knows how to do so much more on a mac because its similar.
by goodspeed8701 April 20, 2009 2:23 PM PDT
So why do people careless about the mac if its all you say. Ur grand mums and dads cant do **** with a pc so they need the mac. if they are productive and computer literate they will go for the pc.
by solitare_pax April 20, 2009 2:43 PM PDT
Actually, if you wish to be productive, go with a Mac.

If you wish to play video games or pimp out your electronics, go with a PC.

It is as simple as that.

@goodspeed8701

It's sad when every comment prior to yours had personal experiences and all you can come up with is

"So why do people careless about the mac if its all you say. Ur grand mums and dads cant do **** with a pc so they need the mac. if they are productive and computer literate they will go for the pc."

The sad thing is, people who choose Mac actually care about their computer. No matter how many PCs running Windows I've seen, I've never seen anyone show any kind of emotion for it. Like Linux is for me, when a person uses OS X, the appreciation for it doesn't die after a day or two. I can't say the same about a Windows computer.
by jabberwolf April 20, 2009 5:27 PM PDT
"Speaking of usability, PC's are what people are used to which makes it more usable than a Mac..
But in contrast to that, Macs are by far better computers, I'd prefer a Mac any day: virus or no virus."

Is it just me, or is this the same logic that all mac users get trained in. the:
"yeah whatever, facts be dam, even if I say 1 thing, I will still believe in my mac"

Such strong Koolaid mac, mighty strong!

"Actually, if you wish to be productive, go with a Mac"
If you want to work collaborate with 1000s of network and office applications and produce things, you use a PC.

If you want to be a professional and run large files in 64bit mode with photoshop CS, 3dsmax, use autodcad to do engineering, you use a PC.

If you want to blog about how you are fantasizing about working, going to have a job, how someone out there is being productive with OSX, you buy a mac.
by Sporlo April 21, 2009 5:41 PM PDT
Seriously, why do people have to argue these kinds of points that are almost entirely depedent on the own person's experiences before (and after, and during) trying a Mac/PC for the first time. It also depends on HOW you learn the new OS.
by myles taylor April 20, 2009 12:46 PM PDT

I'm PC, but I wish AppleOS, Unix, Linux, ... would be more widely used. Windows Market is 90% and no matter what you think about what OS, it is not right. Competition is what makes a good software.

Each OS has PROS and CONS, I just wish all players would play fair game... Microsoft VISTA logo tricks few years ago or Linux lawsuites are disgusting, Apple's comments that AppleOS is more secure... ehm

Haven't seen the ads yet but I have read about the claims made that Windows is the "most secure OS on the planet" made by a MS executive on ZDNet.

http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=4146&tag=nl.e539
by BOTNET April 21, 2009 3:16 PM PDT
I think it's very hard to do any real stats what is THE most secure OS ...

if you look at it from pure "number of attacks" way, then Windows is really at the bottom because it has 90% of the market

If you look at number of patches, then it's different and more complex because MacOS does not disclose usually number of bugs they patch, Windows dicloses exactly what they patch.

well, then other way is to include/exclude other apps causing the attacks - e.g. Adobe Flash (one of the bigger sources of issues on windows). Here you might argue that thanks to bad OS, the app attack can bring OS down ....

in general, Windows has tons of issues, what I don't like is Apple fans living in the bubble of being safe
by ZetaZeta_ April 23, 2009 7:19 AM PDT
I wouldn't mind running OS X supported by Apple on another PC, but that would decrease hardware revenue for them, as well as open up the perfect ecosystem they have crafted where many drivers written by others could crash, hardware doesn't work, etc. Macintosh is a system that works, but only within the limited scope of Apple's controlled environment.

I'd rather build something myself.
by Seaspray0 April 27, 2009 1:49 PM PDT

These editors CLEARLY have a lot of freedom on what they post. They're just spreading information and sometimes adding personal commentary on it. This is not a newspaper, articles here are updated constantly, thus eliminating the need to carefully select quality articles to feature.

Give me a break, you really think Apple cares about its users. Look how long its taking for cut and paste, to be put on the iphone. A friend of mine has an iphone and she had to still ask me for directions because there isn't turn by turn directions on the the iphone. Apple TV still doesn't have a TV tuner. Apple doesn't care about its users, it just cares about money. MS is actually listening to people and thats why Windows 7 is so good and is going to be popular.
by Vegaman_Dan April 20, 2009 1:16 PM PDT
Just read the full text of the 'legal text' scroll for the easy computer ad.

Wow.

Apple is going to be in some serious hot water with that one. I would not be surprised if it does not actually make it to the television. There's some serious misinformation going on there that the FCC is not going to take kindly to. Heck, the EU already slammed Apple earlier for the misrepresentation of how fast the iPhone is by their ads. This is... hilarious, but so far over the top as to get legally damning for Apple.

I hope Apple's lawyers get on the ball and stop it before it goes out. It's not the sort of thing you want people to quote from as it will make a mockery of Apple completely for years to come. :/

"how exactly are people supposed to read that text in 20 sec ad in the first place"

I think part of the joke is the speed of disclaimer. Kind of like the ones on TV for pharmaceuticals and auto dealers. I once had this, as joke, on a webpage sidebar.

"Have you or a loved one been prescribed one or more of the following:

Toxicodendron radicans
Lysergic acid diethylamide
Ovibos moschatus or
Vulpecula

Resulting in joint stiffness, thirst, caffiene addiction, or death, then you may be entitled to compensation for medical malpractice."

Gotta run for a while. I will be back in a bit to see if the flame war has gone nuclearl

@pithenumber
not everyone in going to log onto websites and read wats the text in a ad says
in the first place it's only tech enthusiasts like us will

and how exactly is all this legally binding in the first place
it's a ad for gods sake !
by monkeyfun14 April 20, 2009 2:18 PM PDT
@seven

Spreading misconceptions it could fall under defamation.
by merlefisher April 20, 2009 6:49 PM PDT
@77dust
I agree with monkeyfun14's reply, over exaggeration only hurts the company who is advertising. I usually stick up for Apple because I switched to a mac from a pc and I'm more than satisfied, however, NO COMPUTER IS PERFECT. Macs have issues too, they freeze sometimes and do things that annoy people, it just happens a little less than windows pc's. But for apple to say some of those things... I'm afraid it will get them in trouble.
by seven7dust April 20, 2009 7:06 PM PDT
@ merlefisher
I agree as well , that particular ad was just going over the edge
but still it's a ad who believes ads in the first place
and hence why it's not legally binding !
which was the whole argument all along !
by Vegaman_Dan April 20, 2009 10:16 PM PDT
Another reason I think this could be a legal issue is that there are entirely too many lawyers out there who love to see things like this happen- it's easy money for them. And really- who does that really benefit at that point? Not Apple- not Microsoft, not customers at all. It would be only for the lawyers looking for someone to sue. :/
by Alphaman63 April 21, 2009 6:42 AM PDT
I don't see what the fuss is. Is it not true that you have to do those things when you're running Windows? Defrag, reinstall, hack the registry, load AV sw, load printer drivers...

Do you have to do that on a Mac? Maybe some of it. But not defrag (it's automatic), not reinstall the OS (the only time I've heard of someone doing that was a Windows user who didn't know better), maybe occasionally tweak a plist (but that's often a single 'write' command, not getting into regedit), not load AV sw, not load printer drivers. The Mac OS X makes all that system maintenance stuff invisible to the user -- the computer does the work, not the human! (Imagine that!)

The one thing that is a bit nebulous is the claim about updates. I think the way Apple keeps their claim legit is that they say the Windows user has to do it monthly. Contrasted with the Mac user who does it on a far less frequent basis. That's a very gray area, but they haven't said anything that was explicitly untrue.

The text is very legible in hidef.

Oh, and fwiw, it would be the FTC that would look into advertising claims, not the FCC.
by rapier1 April 22, 2009 12:58 PM PDT
Actually, knowingly making false claims in an advertisement is illegal. There is a certain amount of grey area as well - an ad that is intentionally misleading is actionable. Likewise, even an ad that is unintentionally misleading is actionable. Arguing that "It's just an ad!" really isn't much of a defence with the FTC.

"My preferred operating system is subjectively superior to your preferred operating system..." -JJ

That said, I have had Vista for over 2 years, and have yet to experience a single problem. I wish I could say the same thing for the Macs I work with everyday at work... Seriously, how does Apple get away with such blatant slander?

In my case, it is the other way around. I struggled with Vista for almost 2 years and I did not have the same
issues with my Mac! Finally, I just got rid of Vista! How about that?
by seven7dust April 20, 2009 1:28 PM PDT
well because of the tight control of hardware and software
Apple is in a position to prevent and solve Problems
faster and in a more efficient manner than Microsoft

Even though you didnt have problems with Vista millions of others did and still do
not saying Macs are problem free but compared to Pcs they are far fewer
by ZedAvatar April 20, 2009 1:44 PM PDT
In an ideal world, I would probably own a Mac, and install Boot Camp with Vista - everybody wins. However, since I cant afford the 250% markup Apple charges for a comparably-equipped PC that will do everything the Mac does plus gaming, I simply cannot justify the purchase. If Apple would license out their OS to work with anything, not just their own hardware, they'd have a much greater marketshare. Of course, with a greater marketshare comes greater proliferation of viruses, which is one of the fundamental bases of Apple's advertising campaign.

Fun fact - Macs are personal computers. PC = personal computer. Therefore, Macs are PCs. Whee!
by pithenumber April 20, 2009 1:59 PM PDT
@ZedAvatar
Apple can't license it out without having a big drop in quality or having lots of competitors who will sell stuff that is faster for less
by merlefisher April 20, 2009 6:52 PM PDT
@ZedAvatar
I find that hard to believe. Do you leave your windows vista machine turned off all the time so you don't have any problems with it? ;-)
by stigmattaman April 20, 2009 1:28 PM PDT
I agree that these ads have outlived their usefulness - at first they were kind of amusing (I especially liked the Web ones) but it's played out now. It's especially weird because I really like John Hodgman a lot more than smug, hipster prick Justin Long, and I don't think I'm alone in this one. Particularly as Hodgman gets more exposure on the daily show and other things, these ads may have a reverse effect

Actually, I think this particular round is especially important. It shows that Apple is non-plussed by the Windows ads, and it's business as usual at both Apple and Microsoft: Apple is consistent, Microsoft is the one in reactionary mode. If they had changed the format for this round, that would have signaled that Microsoft's ads had struck a nerve.

Are they getting long in the tooth? Perhaps. But there's something to be said for consistency -- it helps to keep that brand identity. And that's the problem with the MS ads -- they jump from Bill & Jerry, to "I'm a PC", to "kids can do it", to "laptop hunters". They're using the marketplace to do their identity research, and are just all over the map. People will remember them for one thing: inconsistency. And that's bad for Microsoft.

For $300M, they should have found (or bought!) a marketing company that knew something about marketing. Epic fail.

I own a Macmini, an iMac, a Vista Desktop, a Dell XP Laptop, and a Sony Vista laptop.

I just purchased the Sony Vista laptop because my Dell is on it's final legs of life (after 5 years with no formats or virus cleaning. But I stayed away from the bad places on it. Its the hardware thats falling apart)

I went with the Sony because:
My outboard audio recording hardware and internal software runs faster on my VIsta machine than my OSX machines (even though the OSX machine has better tech specs, the drivers are just better written for Vista)
Better bang for the buck. The comparable OSX machine to my Sony machine is almost double the price!
Setting up media extender services on my Mac is more complicated than on my Vista machine
Games

I even sold my Iphone 3G last month to goto a Blackberry because it's better for my needs.

I used to be Apple and nothing but...but latley, I keep finding better offerings from competitiors. They gotta work that much harder now that Apple is seen as God. And I'm getting much better value for it! From everything from MP3 players, phones, and computers.

The problem is that even when people do have experience with both systems (I've supported macs since 1996 and have been using them at work and for development for 6 years) many mac users will discount anything negative about Apple or positive about Microsoft. Just how it goes. Personally, I just use whatever works best for the task at hand. Sometimes its a Mac and sometimes its Microsoft (Vista in particular).

And that comment doesn't make it any less real. 20,000 instances confirmed downloaded from corrupted torrents of iLike09. That's the first number reported, but even they don't know the true numbers involved since once you download the torrented software, it is likely installed on more than one Mac at a time so the numbers can quickly skyrocket.

Unfortunately the mindset of many Mac users have been brainwashed into not taking precautions because this sort of thing is impossible... or was. Times change.

still haven't seen any yet
only a hand full of trojans and Hacks
which have almost zero chance of infecting in the first place !
and still no major wide spread attack yet after all these years !

As far as usage share is concerned
it's estimated that they are about 40-50 million Mac users using the internet everyday
you would expect that the Pride of being the first ever hacker to land a major Virus attack
on a Platform used by millions would be tempting enough for them
but still these hackers only go after a flimsy sand castle that is Windows which suffers
from 100s of thousands of Viruses malware already where's the glory in that !

all this could also be because of the UNIX based Operating system called Mac OSX
or maybe it's because of Microsloths lazy incompetent programmers or both !

The fact remains that mac users
don't need to bother with AV and malware scanners every week
and thats the only fact that matters everything else is FUD
by pithenumber April 20, 2009 5:35 PM PDT

its hard to land a major attack due to marketshare
not impossible as shown by symantec's discovery
