Wozniak would know. He is spot on about Steve Jobs fertile mind - later this summer I believe we will all see the benefits of Steve's six-month rest. Be advised, tech world.

Basically, going on another 'enlightenment' journey to India and coming back with some iGuru product? Yeah, watch out folks.
by nicmart January 18, 2009 1:03 PM PST
A unique perspective? This is typically meaningless Woz jabber. All that resting hasn't given Wozniak any brilliant inspirations.

Well he did say that resting gave "some people" inspirations. :)
by Black_Fly January 18, 2009 2:34 PM PST
And what of your brilliant observations?
by toomath January 19, 2009 1:26 PM PST
Hmmm. A fellow wishing his seriously ill old colleague well, and it's "typical meaningless Woz jabber". Such pleasant characters herabouts!
by nicmart January 19, 2009 2:33 PM PST
With care you might have noticed two things, toomath. The first is that the focus of the article was not that Woz wished Jobs well. The second is that I didn't criticize Woz for wishing Jobs well. If that had been the purpose of the piece I would have had no criticism. Compassionate Woz may be; interesting he is not.

As for Black_Fly, the sort of person who finds Woz perspicacious is not likely to be interested in what I have to say.
by deezzer January 21, 2009 1:25 PM PST
Woz means a lot to the engineering community for technology. He's pioneered too many things to mention here. He finds inspirations in simply living, exploring and enjoying life. As supposed to other workaholics that accumulate mass fortunes and has no time to enjoy it, in this regard, Woz is most brilliant. And the things he is able to explore and do are things you can not even imagine.

wrong word - should be effect. bob haring

likely affect his absence will have on the company.

Hmmm...Nope affect is the correct word. An effect is something that you watch in movies that are special.
by bommai January 19, 2009 12:20 PM PST
effect is the correct terminology. Brilliantbob - refer to a thesaurus.
by bhushan bhaagii January 20, 2009 4:27 AM PST
Well, a piece on Steve Jobs ends up in people giving lessons in English language usage...
is "effect" the correct "word" or "terminology"? And do you "refer a thesauraus" or
"refer to a thesaurus"?

Remember when everyone thought the iPhone was the greatest design ? Now it looks like a FUGLY SLAB compared to the Pre.

@AppleSuxLeo

Hmm, beauty most definitely IS in the eye of the beholder, eh, troll?
by Sporlo January 18, 2009 2:39 PM PST
It's just more curvy. And btw that's not the latest generation iPhone. Also note that the iPhone came first. Compare looks between two things that are the same age.
by Penguinisto January 18, 2009 4:18 PM PST
That's funny... the Pre is twice as thick as the iPhone. Dunno of anyone who wants to carry something that big as a phone nowadays... ;)
by eadeguzman January 18, 2009 6:42 PM PST
Pre is thicker and has smaller screen. Definitely a case of too little, too late.
by thefilebunch January 18, 2009 8:41 PM PST
It's the Zune of cell phones.
by AppleSuxLeo January 18, 2009 11:17 PM PST
iPhone = non multi-tasking slab-phone. Another reason for the Pre`s superior ergonomics is that it was designed to be operated one handed , ambidextrously. All the touch functionality works with ONE HAND due to the genius of the GESTURE area. iPhone now looks "Stonehenge" in comparison.
by jaxstephens January 19, 2009 12:32 PM PST
The relative beauty of industrial design in a given product is just that: relative. Different people have different subjective tastes, though I think it's clear that over time Apple is widely considered to have some of the best design chops of any company around. Even though I don't own an iPhone, I think its minimalist design is more elegant and refined than that of the Palm Pre. I also think the slide-out keyboard on the Pre somewhat destroys the design harmony Apple is able to achieve without providing a physical keyboard. Slide-out keyboards on small devices typically aren't that slick and seem to destabilize the ability to have a solid build quality.

dude,
before he made pre, he designed iphone. he also layout his swimming pool pipe line like PWB circuitry. He is a Mozart on his way making a Jupiter Symphony. What you are compare to is called progress!

Burned but good. Leo you might want to consider ditching that name. Or then again maybe not (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Steve Wozniak doesn't know any better than the man on the street. He's not on the board nor does he work at Apple in the inner circles of those that know what's in the product line.

Jobs stated He'd keep in touch with Tim Cook for big decisions (read new products). Things will be fine. Jobs' health will be monitored closely and he'll get the right mix of drugs and treatments to fatten him up.

People should fear him getting used to not working more than anything. He may decide that his quality of life would benefit from not working at all. It's his life and he's still young and need to take care of himself.

He is the co-founder of Apple. He surely have a better perspective than any man on the street. He was the technical brains in Apple when he was there.

Do you seriously believe that you have the same insight into how product development works in Apple?

Woz is a historical figure in Tech. Show some respect.
by SpiritWater January 19, 2009 9:02 AM PST
Did you watch the video eadeguzman? Woz said nothing that you or I couldn't have stated based on Jobs' on words in past events.

Woz hasn't been with Apple as a full time employee for going on 2 decades. Since then Apple has sold off their manufacturing and has become secretive under Jobs where it wasn't when Woz was around.

I have respect for Woz in creating the Apple I and II lines and all the work he has done (ASCII etc), but to believe that he has the inside track on Jobs would be incorrect. Show some respect to Jobs and his health issues.
by MSSlayer January 19, 2009 6:38 PM PST
Woz knows Steve Jobs and how his mind works better than you do.

It is not a difficult concept.
by ozicecool January 18, 2009 6:49 PM PST
This is really a sad story. Personally I am very sorry to hear about Steve's health. However if the investors are thinking that Apple without Steve will fall, I would ask them the question that "did they think that Steve will live forever? (or anyone for that matter)". If the management at Apple is not confidence to say that 'with or without Steve they will guide the company on the foundation Steve laid and the investors should not worry'; then I believe you need to seriously question their ability to run a company such as Apple.

When I heard the news about Investors are thinking of suing, I thought what on earth are these investors thinking ...., if that was the case they should have taken a life policy on Steve rather than investing with Apple.

It is amusing that people think Jobs designs everything at Apple.

As long as his replacement doesn't change the culture too radically nothing bad will happen.

That investors freak out, only shows what we already knew. Wall Street is packed with drooling monkeys.
by eadeguzman January 19, 2009 7:00 PM PST
Hey MSSlayer...

Nobody thinks that Jobs designs anything. He provides vision. He approves what goes and what doesn't.

If the wrong person is on the chair, that person can possibly make the wrong deals, etc... no matter how talented your employees are.

Look at what happened to Yahoo. Wrong executive decisions, wrong insight, wrong vision, can make or break for any tech company (or any company for that matter).

The street is panicking only because they don't know how Tim Cook's mind works... Apple might eventually need Woz's approval of Tim to win over the hearts and minds of investors (the owners of Apple).

WHO CARES what Woz thinks, the moron is still delusional from his plane crash back in the 80's ... The dork rambles about the past like a drunk at a high school reunion.

by eadeguzman January 19, 2009 6:19 PM PST
Thanks CNET, that last comment was definitely off-base and offensive.

I'm not sure why websterphreaky thinks that anybody cares about what he thinks of Woz, much less his ranting about him.

Heck, he does more philanthropy than Jobs. I think that's why Woz has a street named after him in San Jose...

I'm not a fanboy but I think when it comes to a person's health, if they don't want to discuss it then thats it. Even if he's a public figure who runs a company, you should respect that. If a member of your family is ill and you suspect it but they don't want to talk about it, do you force them to sit down and do an interview with you? At the very least, you would give them time to collect their thoughts. When you are facing the possibility of mortality, you don't think about which version of the nano you are going to buy next. You think about the important stuff. And you can't do that if everyone every 5 minutes demand some information from you. Lets just leave the man be and let the rest of the company run the company. I have co-workers at the moment dealing with life and death but I don't bug them about it every day. I take over their work and I don't ask when my work load will get lighter. Its the very least I can do for another person to shoe them some respect.

Hmmm... will Woznaik provide an entertaining host to meetings? Jobs was pretty dry as a presenter. Balmer can scream and pop some veins in his forehead pretty good. Gates was just plain... geeky. The google guys are laid back. Yang was a tight @$$. So what can we expect from Woznaik? Anybody know?

Changes can lead to greater opportunites for technological advances. My hope is that the first and foremost task is to keep up with progressing digital security systems.
