Plus, wasn't turn by turn navigation promised / strongly rumoured to be in the 2.2 release? With turn by turn navigation the iPhone would subsume one more role that up to now you'd need a separate device for. It's already an MP3 player, phone, camera, and video player all in one, add in GPS turn by turn navigation and that's more incentive for people to buy it, I would have thought.

You're right about MMS though, it's only ever been a half step between normal text and email in my opinion, something that was never going to be around longterm, maybe Apple are banking on it disappearing over the next few years as more and more phones become smart.

Apple NEVER gets it right the first or the second time. Third time has always been a charm for Apple.
Example #1- First the iPod then the iPod Photo and FINALLY the iPod Video.
Example #2 - 1st Generation Nano - OK... 2nd Generation... *** with that small screen... 3rd Generation... FINALLY the right one with screen size big enough and the choice of colors.

As for iPhone... Actually Steve Jobs is doing a phenomenal job! The reason as to why their is no flash is because it would slow down the iPhone. Adobe has made programs but are actually still trying to make a quicker program. Would you rather have a slow ass downloading phone with flash, or a quick one with no flash? Please believe that when Adobe creates a faster flash version, it will be inserted into the iPhone. Time and patience guy. Allowing Flash will also open up a 'backdoor' to installing and running applications without using The App Store. Apple is making a ton of almost pure profit whenever people buy a 3rd party app.

They'll never allow Flash as long as it makes it possible for an application developer to install their flash game by merely visiting a flash-embedded site.

Forget about frills like turn by turn GPS--what about a TO-DO LIST??? How could a device being marketed as a PDA/smartphone not have a to-do list that can sync with a desktop? I don't get it. They're worrying about street-level views on Google Maps, but leaving out basic features that every other PDA on the planet has had for years? That Notes application is awful--takes forever to start up (so forget jotting down a quick phone number)--and doesn't sync. But what a huge relief that we can now download podcasts over the air--glad they rushed to fix that one.

As I am sure you know, one of the strength of the iPhone right now is all the very skilled developers working to bring apps to it. Just do a search on the app store for a to do list and you will get many options, most of which are free, many of which can sync, to either your desktop or up to the cloud.

PS: As for flash I would loathe to see it put on the iPhone due to all the flash ads and it's bloated nature and the ironic part about this is I work full time as a Flash developer hahaha

My sister who, really isnt the most technical at all has an iPhone and just the other day her big complaint about the iphone was that it didnt have a to do list like her pearl did, why is this not even a part of the calender? Sure you can make everything an appointment but thats pointless. Yes there is notepad but that has no reminder capability.

Apple needs to forget the stuff that tech junkeis love about the iphone or whatever and remember that they need thus device to appeal to the masses, yes alot of people did by iphones, but who says they are going to keep them at upgrade time or if they damage and need to replace them. All those people complaining about those little dumb features that you may once use once a month may be the difference between a returning iphone customer and a customer returning to a blackberry or other phone.

Very good point, Goodbye Helicopter. The shortcomings of the iPhone are tolerable. Cut and paste is something I need only when I am writing a report, something I'd never do on an iPhone. Turn-by-turn GPS? It'd be nice but it'd likely come at a premium where AT&T and Apple would likely make it so the AT&T Nav is the only turn-by-turn app you can use. I don't own an iPhone, but I'd like to. Even with it's shortcomings. I went from a Blackberry to currently using Windows Mobile. Both are awful. Now the question is ... iPhone 3G or Nokia E71? The Blackberry Storm (tried out this morning) is leaps light years behind the iPhone 3G and shouldn't be brought up again.

The iPhone's media player is easy to the core to use. No Window Mobile or BlackBerry menus to have to figure out to find your music.

In my opinion, the Storm's screen is intolerable. Scrolling takes more pressure than needed for a capacitive touchscreen. That click screen is really a bad idea. It's a failed gimmick. The device itself seems rushed. There is really nothing remarkable or revolutionary about the OS the Storm runs on, either. It's more of a very minute evolution of BlackBerry's past OS's. The operability of is just as cumbersome as a BlackBerry with a trackball, if not, made worse by the poor mechanics of scrolling with your finger on the click-screen.

A consumer not hanging my hat on every new thing that's out, I'd still want a device I'll want to USE, not cope with. It's just a matter of personal preference. Didn't mean to make you go poopy over my assessment. Go ahead and wipe yourself kiddo.

Some people just jumped to the iPhone from "normal" cell phones without trying any of the other comparable devices. Using Flash, one could launch executeables from the 3rdPty Flash application. This violates the preset terms for acceptable apps. Apple is sticking to its terms, which were already clear before Flash was under development. Adobe is to blame here, not Apple. As for Jobs, his sentiments are ignorant of the shortcomings in his company's device's hardware. Pull open your trusty tech specs sheet on the iPhone. The iPhone runs an underclocked 620 MHz CPU at about 400-415 MHz. That gets bogged down easily because of Apple's R&D's failure to efficiently design a device capable of utilizing a fully-clocked 620 Mhz CPU because temperature concerns could not be avoided with the insulation imposed by an all-plastic case. It also only runs on 128 MB RAM. Flash barely runs cleanly on Windows Mobile with Opera and Internet Explorer Mobile 6 on devices with CPUs running at 528 and RAM bottoming at 256. Flash runs slow on the iPhone??? No sh*t Sherlock. How does Job's et al complain about the slowness found in Flash on the iPhone when the iPhone isn't even capable of running its CPU at the regular clock without burning up inside under normal use? Meanwhile, his company owns patented tech that could compete and build off of Quicktime R&D that dropped Flash support, but so far, no cigar. Thanks big.mouth ... insightful ...

Apple, MS, and everybody else releases updates all the time. Many times to products that I use quite often and have never had a problem with. As a BlackBerry user who had to choose his phone and provider based on geography and network coverage, the nitpicks about the iPhone and AT&T are not strictly relevant to me.

However, could this article be amended to reflect that fact that this update applies to the iPod Touch? And perhaps the article could outline changes to iPod Touch versus iPhone?

I can't believe people buy the line "I don't need MMS becasue it does e-mail". For consumer phone users not having MMS is a big miss. 95% of my friends don't have iPhones, but they do want to send MMS (pictures mostly) - I am left out in the cold on that one.

The poster who mentioned the "To Do List" - AMEN! I held off on the 1st gen waiting for Exchange connectivity, and then I find out that there's no way to synch tasks. Pretty shoddy.

Cut and Paste - no biggie for me. I had it on my Windows Mobile devices and never used it. But I do think it's a fundamental feature that should be in the product.

All that being said - the iPhone is the most entertaining and engaging phone I've ever owned. I'd love to try out a Storm, but my company is on AT&T so I'll be on the iPhone for a while.

Yes, Copy and Paste would be wonderful, especially for those often times pointless, but enjoyable chain text messages, and also for email; and MMS messaging would be nice, however infrequently most people would use it, but that's AT&T's deal partly. Flash? Eh, take it or leave it. But what i think is a really big issue for the iPhone is a landscape keyboard. How ridiculously simple is it Apple? I mean really. Safari already has it, and there are apps that do it for email, it would be so simple to create a landscape keyboard for text messaging! That's the iPhone's biggest issue.(Well, for me at least). Every other touch screen phone, albeit completely inferior in every other way, has a landscape keyboard. Why hasn't Apple released one yet?!

About Cut & Paste

For the non-technical people to understand, it's about the architecture of OSX for the iPhone. Applications are truly separate, to the point that only essential system deamons (background programs) will ever be running at the same time. ALL other applications have a single, sand-boxed space that they run in. Only one can be run at a time.

Cut, and paste requires support for simple textual data to binary object data. Well, binary none-the-less but memory management becomes a thorny potential problem, to the point that the current architecture cannot support loading an application in the same memory space. The apparent solution would be virtual (flash memory aka "ram-disk" since there is not hard-drive) memory. That means another architectural change where the applications would be allowed to have a common virtual memory for cut and paste.

Sounds like a great solution, but now it creates a huge security issue. It's kind of a toss-up and I believe they are probably arguing internally on the proper management of this if they are even thinking about it. But that's all but a big fat guess from me.


Bottom-line, cut and paste is that parallel issue that has been following evolution of the OSX iPhone system, only on the other side of the mirror. If you are super concerned about security and control, you'd never allow. If you want to make this an even more successful device, you'd figure it out. I believe it will happen, but has to be a part of the architecture's evolution. Sounds strange, that such a simple thing would be diametrically opposed to the architecture of the operating system.

Yes Safari is a better browser, but since it lacks cut and paste that ultimately, according to your argument, Apple's OS on the iPhone is an inferior product to Rim.

The same security issue stands for RIM using cut, and paste. But that's not the point. The point is, I believe (and this may not be so), that the design of the OS to run only one user application at a time, does not allow for data to be shared between applications. I think it was built this way from the ground up. If someone knows better, please tell us.

I know it all depends on location, but in my area (Los Angeles, particuarlly the valley and downtown) I've had sprint, verizon, t-mobile and at&t. never ever had a problem with reception and dropped calls on sprint and verizon. dropped calls and no reception is a daily occurance on at&t and t-mobile. even before i had the iphone. I just wished it could be offered other places even though i know it is very very very unrealistic. just being a dreamer :)

I agree with you "pme31561, I also had the iphone (1st gen), loved it but hated AT&T. Calls were constantly dropped, I couldn't get a good signal for the phone or internet most of the time, it was very frustrating so I sold it. The cut & paste, flash, MMS issues were there but were not deal breakers for me. Now I am with Sprint, and about to leave Sprint to try the "Storm", which is funny because most complaints about it is "it doesn't have Wi-Fi", well I had wi-fi with the iphone almost never used it and when I did try, every place had a password lock on it so I couldn't use it. I wouldn't mind going back to the new iphone, but I never will as long as it is exclusive to AT&T.

As an IPhone owner, the fact that the Storm allows internet access for a laptop when the phone is tethered is THE killer in my opinion. After all, ATT charges a premium for 3G access -- why can't I use what I'm paying for.

Also, cutting and pasting would be great, so would a way to delete text quickly in an e-mail. The fact of the matter is that the IPhone is very crash prone -- mine crashes regularly.

If I was in the market again right now (and not locked into a 2yr contract) it would be a no-brainer to buy the Storm.

That is the biggest reason I couldn't switch to an iphone. I'm not a fan of doing anything internet related on a phone, even if it's an iphone. I can get little things done, but it's so much slower to type and perform simple task. The nice thing about a WM phone is you can tether for free... non PAM plan required. Bluetooth support! They forgot better Bluetooth support! I could care less about ggogle maps c@1P! but I bought one of those bluetooth enabled Polaroid printers to catalog parts details ect. and had to return it because of lack of bluetooth printing on the iphone. Nah... instead of features we could actually use like landscape texting, copy and paste, voice activated dialing WITHOUT 3rd party apps, and speed dialing (favorites is an alternative but why not both) we get google maps updated with street view...
