Installing 2.1 on my iPhone seems to have fried my SIM card. I am in Mexico, using an official, NOT JAILBROKEN Telcel iPhone 3G. After installing I got the "No SIM Card" message.

I am not alone, there is a discussion thread going on in Apple's support forums where others are reporting the same problem:

I found the update to greatly increase speed, but seems to have trashed the Facebook, NY Times and Chanel apps.

Honestly apple is not the only guilty party, many "smart phone" makers forget that first and for most this product is a CELL PHONE , but seem to give short shrift to the un sex cell phone funcation programing, giving it to junior or part time hourly programers and get usually mix to horrid results. So you get embrassing bricks like the over hype I poop phone part 2 that can not hold or place a call to save its arse. I got two friends who have return three of these phones and are responding to web based ads to start a class action law suit against apple/att. Personally I hope that 2.1 software upgrade fixes most of the problems, although I havent never bought any of the apple hype from day one. The I phone has some very cool Ideas that I would like to see on a cdma network (cough Verizon) . But Im still conveniced there going to be a hardware product recall (for a large number of the Iphone 2) because the issues my friends have experanced are the result of defective hardware and nothing software redo can fix.

I have updated and things are great. Of course, I haven't really had many problems overall.
I am thrilled with my iPhone experience. Since the update, the web is quicker, reception is better, lots of good things....

Oh, and to you complainers.... Stop whining and change phones!!!! Get yourself a blackberry or something. You know the only reason you got an iPhone was because you wanted to look cool carrying it, the same as all of us. So if you're so busy and so important that you can't function without "up to the second" access to your email, change phones. You are obviously so high powered and wealthy that a little thing like "retail price on a phone" shouldn't stop you. Heck, you probably spend more than that on lunch... Change phones, change carriers, change everything... But most of all.. change your attitude.. It's a phone with internet access... Relax!

Yeah, got the update, haven't had to reset my phone yet so that's good, my applications haven't crashed yet and the 3G reception issue STILL HAS NOT BEEN FIXED!!!

I must say that this is the first update where I actually noticed a difference the battery life for me is vastly improved I would say about 30% ( gauged by how long it took to die with all radios on and watching 300). Also now I don't have to dred opening my contacts or use google instead. The other improvement I've noticed is the 3G signal now works in my basement. So all in all no complaints over here just happy it works now. Now they can get on with getting me turn by turn GPS I'd be totally happy.

My 3G connection has held a steady 5 bars all over town in the past 24 hrs...I didn't have crash issues and my 3G wasn't even that bad before. But I do think the battery life has improved I had 3G on all day and my phone didn't get a low battery prompt until about 1 am.

I'm using the 2G iphone in the UK and it seems to be right this time! (still a bit early as only have it for two days).
The overall operation is more snappy, like it was using OS 1.X, the contact app is quick again (no more few seconds "freeze" when 1st using it), backup times over iTunes is much shorter (I hope it remains this way!!!) and they implemented the triple click on the mic to jump to the previous track, this is very useful! have to see if the new hearphones with volume control will work or not, but this is a welcome addition.
I really dont care much about MMS, never used these in any phone, hope they did include the "Push notification" to have IM and VOIP the ability to notify when someone is calling.
In short; a very good and expected update which compensates for me the couple of months with the buggy 2.0.
For the ones writing the classic "apple hate" messages without even having this device; don't you have a life? come on!

I noticed with the v2.1 update that when you are in Maps and have not previously turned on Location Services in Settings, General and you touch the lower left hand corner icon to get your location you get a screen message " Turn on Location Services to allow "Maps" to determine your location". Then you have to press one of two choices. "Settings" or "OK". If you press OK the GPS does nothing and doesn't locate you. Before v2.1 it would automatically turn on Location Services and find you. Now you have to press Settings which will now take you to the Location Services Screen and allow to be On. It was convenient in the past to leave Location Services off if not using to save battery life and can be activated while in Maps, but now it seems you have to take an extra step to turn it on while in Maps. If anybody is not experiencing this change please advise.

I'm not experiencing this change (but then again I'm not using a faulty smartphone); advise: buy a serious smartphone (Nokia N96, BlackBerry, or any Windows Mobile 6 smartphone).

I denied all things Apple til I got the iPhone. All you haterz need to "Cierra la boca" or shut up! I never had major issues before the updates and I still don't. Sure the battery life may be short but the thing is basically a pocket PC. Best investment ever. I'm still not drinking Steve Jobs Kool-Aid and I hate the fact that every year, Apple products are "updated" with features that could easily have been incorprated into 1st or 2nd generation models. That said, they make some cool stuff.

I deny all things Apple but the iPod. It's not the few dozens of haters that need to shut up, it's the millions of Apple sheeps that need to stop being ignorant and Apple that needs to stop promising what they can't deliver. If you never had major issues before the updates and you still don't you are only the exception that confirms the rule (or you think Apple made up the bugs they claim this update fixes?). It may be the best investment ever, yes, but only for someone who has never tried a Nokia N96, BlackBerry, or Windows Mobile 6 (true) smartphone. At least you realize how Apple uses its users, releasing minor updates every single year so your brand-new Apple gadget is already outdated and so you have to go run to the store to buy the new one because Steve Jobs told you to and he rocks. That said, they make some defective stuff, and the iPod is really the only thing they know how to do well.

Hmmm so far it looks like the upgrade 2.1 look like 3 out 4 winner. The folks who were lucky and got a well manufactor Iphone 2.1 the firmware upgrade reinvents the phone. But the un lucky few (about 25% of the Iphones solid) who got defectively manufactor phones the firmware upgrade does nothing for them possiblely making things worse. IF Apple really cares about its good brand name apple needs to recall the defective phones and replace them with phones correctly assemble form factorys with no QC issues. Being a life long user of M$ pc software it is funny to see apple copy all of M$ worst pratices with the Iphone2 release saddly hubris is a disease that infects the most liberal tree hugging companys too , LOL!

Yeah, I find it ironic too that Microsoft is improving the quality of their products while Apple goes in the opposite direction.

I thought Apple products were perfect and didn't need these things called "updates" that are only for Windows?
Well, so much for "just works", LOL.

LOL oh yes steve jobs is SSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOO perfect he's removed the earser from his pencil. Yeah the apple hype wears thin when they have a brain dead launch and pull a M$ and refuse to admitt their mistakes until the class action lawsuit schisters start sniffing around their doors and on the web.LOL

WHere has anyone EVER said Apple Products are "PERFECT"? Yes, Apple fanboys and lovers may praise their devices and claim lots of great stuff but it is not about perfection... It is about GREAT products and amazing software when compared to Windows mainly. It is not that they are without flaws and any mac lover will admit that. They are generally loaded with .... FAR less problems, errors, hurdles to overcome to get things to work and are just generally a great experience. Things do just work but from time to time any great product can have a hiccup!!..

If the iPhone was not a "great" (NOTE... I DID NO SAY: "PERFECT") product then why in the world are some many phone makers trying to play catch-up in design and user-interface? Why are so many trying to emulate the interface? Why are these things selling like crazy? BEcause it is an amazing device developed by a company that does a great job and building cool and incredibly functional products. Apple makes mistakes but they are usually very responsive and fixing them and the problems with the iphone did not make the device completely unusable just a nuisance. These came out in late June and now it looks like everything is fixed and this phone is still the best experience in user-interface when compared to any other phone on the market. It is a complete stellar user experience and ease of use that no other phone maker can claim yet. AND IS SOMETHING PHONE MAKERS ARE GOING TO COPY and HOPEFULLY improve on...

Get the Perfect thing out of your narrow minded thinking and just take in the fact that yes Apple products do just tend to work but they can have issues to from time to time. But when compared to other products and computer makers they are far far less!!! My question is do you own an iPhone? I say NOPE your just talking based on ignorance and not really using the product.

FINALLY show me any marketing or statement where an APple person will say :: Apple products are "PERFECT"! Things do just work in most ways but since they are not perfect then problems may occur, but they are usually fixed quickly and can easily be overcome and far less often than many others out there.

Finally.... the bugs have been fixed. Much better 3G reception, very quick texting and contact lists, and more stable running of APS. I have been a recent Apple convert, both in laptop and iPhone (always had an iPod though). And I must admit, this iPhone release with all its bugs did concern me at first, but given the amazing technology that this phone offers there are bound to be issues. The important thing was how fast the problems were fixed. Hats off to Apple for being responsive. I know that when I owned one of the first Blackberries it took over a year for them to work out the kinks. And for the obvious Apple hatters out there... wake up. Apple products (although some have issues) have far greater functionality, stability and overall greater designs that PC products will ever have. So shut your pie holes and get with the times.

wow, I have never seen such a stream of retarded comments. While the iphone has bugs, It still is "one of" the best personal devices on the market. It has the best browser of any cell phone, it's easy to use, the screen is amazing, the ipod interface is super cool....People are just a bunch of whiners. Usually someone who whines alot has a lower intelligence level, and was probably mistreated by their parents. I can also stick it down my pants with vibrate turned on and call myself from my home phone.....It always cleans up well....
