The first thing to notice if you are a social reporter is societies. They are pluralistic and set boundaries. Three generations ago, politics and religion were two topics that weren't discussed in polite social forums, which is another way of saying the polity limits the conversation. The only thing more taboo was sex, the only topic we all have in common.
One way to keep a common item at high value is to constrain its frequency. The way to diminish it is to increase it's amplitude. Welcome to the Web.

- I absolutely don't get the complaints. I look at the tech category, and those are the stories I get. I never see the political stories unless I go to the "all" category, which is not what my profile is set for.
