Will we have Superbowl ads for Facebook in 2008? Facebook's current growth rate is phenomenol but unsustainable for very long.

MySpace? Toast! Murdock paid far too much, just as Microsoft is paying too much now.

How do targeted ads on Facebook work?

If you are a woman interested in running, what happens if you visit a friend's page who likes video games? Does that women's running shoe appear on your friend's page? Similarly, would a friend who isn't interested in running see that ad on your page because you indicated it as an interest?

So who cares?

I do miss the point of some social trends, and social networking
is one of them. I join these networks, then have no idea what to
do with them, nor any interest in finding out. Would somebody
please explain to me why anybody wants to do this? If you're
political, have a hobby or an interest, there's lots of things out
there for you. If you want to date, there's many dating sites.
What is it that these sites add? Like I say, I sign up for the
occasional thing when I hear good things about it; but then it
sits there unused because I have no idea what to do next, nor
any inclination to find out. Am I just a stick-in-the-mud?

By the way, I'm not 18 any more.

About The Social

CNET News' Caroline McCarthy is a downtown Manhattanite who believes that, despite popular opinion, the Web can actually help your social life. She's happily addicted to fun social-media tools from Twitter to Yelp to Facebook, sends an inordinate number of text messages, and has a tendency to waste time at the office reading restaurant blogs. Here, she explores all facets of the Web's gregarious side, as well as the unique tech culture in her home city of New York. (Don't call it Silicon Alley.)
