CNET News' Caroline McCarthy went into an advance screening of the new "Star Trek" prequel barely knowing what a Vulcan is. Can a total newbie enjoy this film? Heck, yes.

The world may have thrilled to the potential for a Google Phone, but what Google actually unveiled is its plan for a new smartphone world order.

faq Worms, Trojans, and SMS attacks are risks for mobile phones, but the biggest practical threat to users is losing the device.
CNET News' Caroline McCarthy is a downtown Manhattanite who believes that, despite popular opinion, the Web can actually help your social life. She's happily addicted to fun social-media tools from Twitter to Yelp to Facebook, sends an inordinate number of text messages, and has a tendency to waste time at the office reading restaurant blogs. Here, she explores all facets of the Web's gregarious side, as well as the unique tech culture in her home city of New York. (Don't call it Silicon Alley.)

And it's not a prequel, it's a retcon/reboot from an earlier starting point of the crew of the Starship Enterprise.
Once you accept those parameters, the movie can, and will, stand on it's own.
If you insist on trying to shoehorn it into TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, or any of the other movies, you'll be doing yourself a disservice, and you may end up hating it.
The Star Trek Universe will never happen in our future the way any of the shows have envisioned. The act of imagining it changes the timeline. And the givens in technological develpment are not the same.
Riiight. Now try telling us what that is supposed to mean. I still hear "prequel".
I wonder if Star Trek is as big of a hit as we all hope it will be if they will give him the ok to make a Star Trek series. :)
Just joking of course, I love star trek but wish they went into the far future instead of the past. I never watched the original series except for the movies and don't see what would be so great story wise. The later star trek series introduces the borg, Q and further developed all the other alien races out there.
Since you have an appreciation for that worthless waste of TV air time called LOST (Sorry J.J.) I must question your taste and your review (if you can call it that) of the new Star Trek film.
I would also call out CNET and ask why they would send someone who has no frame of reference with regards to the previous Star Trek material, science fiction, or movies?
I am sorry Caroline, but stick with your social 'sex in the city' tech and PLEASE stay as far away from movies (not withstanding any chick-flix) as possible.
Oh, yes - Thank you for letting us know about the Budweiser and Nokia, that is a crucial life saving fact!
Caroline, for the love of anything holy......just write about what you know.... or do some research so you can appear to be informed....DON'T WASTE OUR TIME WITH MINDLESS BLATHERING!!!!!!
Thanks!
P.S. Ear-splitting action? OPEN your eyes, it's a movie!
I can't wait to see Star Trek and I love that I'm hearing good buzz about it. J.J. Keep up the good work and don't listen to simple minded people.
If the world moved as fast as LOST does, then I would be sending this to you via snail mail.
Watching an episode of lost is like looking up into the sky and spinning around and around until you fall down or throw up..... WOW what FUN!
Do you honestly expect we would be using cellphones by then? I would consider this movie a huge (FAIL) if they use the current Nokia logo.

Not that I'm for product plament in movies, but budweiser being around doesn't not make sense to me... It's also probably going to get a chuckle out of the audience (which is probably why it's in there).
