Comments on: Facebook users hate redesign. Lather, rinse, repeat?

The social network has historically waved off user complaints over redesigned features with the attitude of "they'll get used to it." It's worked in the past. But it might not this time.

Ummm, I saw people freaking over the last redesign... Then they figured it out and all was quiet. Nice new features seemed to overcome the outcry. Now they have changed it again (it looks a bit more like the last incarnation if I recall correctly). People are screaming again. Give it a few weeks and all will be fine.

this redesign seems lacking.

why can't i choose which design to use?


anyways, the site is still lacking. it takes too many steps to send a message. clicking on someones picture should give you the option to send a message to that person.

The new design is pretty clunky. I liked the previous one but this one just feels busy and incomplete. Not to mention some of the stuff on my wall went missing after the change over.

Actually, there were things I liked about the last redesign right away. I reserved judgment on the things I didn't like (which were few) and got used to it in just a couple of days. Well, I've given myself a week to get used to the new Facebook, and this time, I'm just finding more and more things that I don't like about it as I go.

It's not as usable as the last design, and the stupid rounded picture icons are a step backward - let's cram everyone's picture to fit in a box with no corners...

Rounded boxes are great for icons. Not so great for photographs.

Facebook users are generally the most whiney users ever :), however, from what I've heard applications have nearly flatlined in new users from the start of this new design, and it seems like your really getting mostly status updates on the front page, not relationship changes, new photos etc.


Otherwise, I don't really care :). No ones paying for it, so get over it,

You're getting the same stuff, the statuses are just the biggest headlines. You can still see practically everything else in a smaller font which can be remedied by a single or multiple Ctrl + + presses.

And being a Facebook user, I would say we are a whiney bunch. I like the new layout but I feel like I'm going to be the last one standing by Facebook and everybody else is going to be hating anything that Facebook, specifically Mark Zuckerburg, does.

This author brings up a good point about facebook not dealing with just "the young and tech-savvy anymore". I recently read how facebook's latest user jump is attributed to, as they delicately stated, "older users". I've noticed this as many of my 40+ aged relatives, coworkers have joined. And that's a crowd that's less likely to feverishly commit to tech devices.

Where as (admittedly) me and my peer group will bear our fists in outrage at changes, we can't imagine living our lives without devices to assist in social contact. Therefore, we ultimately acquiesce and continue using. In contrast, the generation up is less likely to be attached to tech applications/devices. They'll join if it's convenient and quit if it's not.

Many may think it's "lame" to have their mom, dad and teacher on facebook - but for facebook this is a business and they know their growing profits dervie from cornering whatever market they can get. If they've already cinched the youth market, then they should be wary of rocking the boat for their next potentially big market of "mature" users.

Hell, I'm 41 and even MY mom is on Facebook - which is interesting. Several of my relatives over 60 are. One of them lives with the Maasai in Africa and loved Facebook because he can keep in touch with all of us and post pictures of his work. Well now all he gets are stupid app notices and I don't even get his pictures because I've got a whole page filled with notices about people giving easter eggs to people I don't know. This is absolutely maddening.

I wish I were a web developer, I'd copy facebook, prevent all apps and market it to people over 50.

I'm 47, and my geek level is high, but I still hate Facebook/MySpace with a passion. I prefer Live Journal. I can still stay in contact with important peeps without all the crapola.

I just don't get it. I never really cared for the last design, but it was still better than this one. It's just weird as hell. I don't want twitter, and that's pretty much what this is. It's content without any explanation. People's comments without who they are directed toward or when they were posted, just a mishmash of every damn thing.

Aren't Facebook statuses pretty much content without much information anyway? If you want to see comments directed to you, they are either right under your statuses or on Wall-to-wall. The old features are still there and they are not buried either. I saw the Wall to wall button right away (well it's plank to plank for me since I use the Pirate English translation).

I agree with infinitely. I believe this redesign was to mimic Twitter. This is Facebook's reaction to the rising popularity to Twitter.

Also, the people saying "it's free, don't complain" are idiots. They get ad revenue and revenue from knowing what we like, what we're talking about and everything else. If they aren't making massive amounts of money, they don't know how to run a ******* business. We have every right to complain about exactly what we want to complain about.

I agree. I gather that facebook actually isn't profitable (yet), but that doesn't make it a charity.

Example: If you're poor, and a charity gives you canned food, and you say "I wanted lobster", well yes, you're ungrateful. If it's not a charity though, if it's a company that plans to make billions of dollars off your eyes, well then, kick and scream. You are the customer, not the recipient of charity. After all, it will be the products you buy that are advertised on facebook that will pay for facebook.

Complain away, facebook's not a charity.

See, the simples option for Facebook here would be to make this optional & really easy to change back, thereby saving the complaints & allowing 'streamers' to get what they want too!

The fact is that they won't change it back because of the amount of time and money that was spent to develop, test, and implement the new layout far outweighs the cost of a few users using Facebook less or quitting all together. The additional cost to set things back to what they once were probably doesn't fit will with the company reps either. So the only thing they can do to satisfy the masses is to do simple cosmetics which will come here and there over time. But the fact is, most people will just have to get use to the new look.....or quit.

When the dust settles people will get used to this redesign.

I understand where they are coming from, but I still wish the things you see in the right sidebar were in your stream. If they can't do that, at least make the right sidebar a separate stream. Why demote notes & fan pages while promoting wall posts & status updates? I don't get that. But in the end, as long as I get notifications in one place it doesn't really matter.

Apart from that I have no problems with it. I just wish that they'd innovate like they used to instead of just copying twitter.

To me a site that doesn't redesign is simply dead. I got used to the new design almost immediately but that's just me. I got used to the Office 2007 ribbon after 30 minutes of usage, I got used Windows 7 almost right away. But I guess not everyone can be pleased. Not every can become accustomed to sudden changes as quickly. I'm just the one of the lucky ones I guess.

Well, I think getting used to it and liking it are 2 different things.

I got used to it, no problem, but I just don't like it as much as the previous design.

Facebook is just arrogant. They know they dominate the market at this time and feel that they can do whatever they want. Other companies have done this in the past... The best example I can think of is Yahoo. When a better alternative comes around people will leave Facebook in droves because they are sick and tired of the constant UI changes. I left the site after the last interface change and will never go back. I also emailed their advertisers and let them know that I would stop buying their products as long as they advertised on Facebook. All they need to do is make the interface change optional... but they are far to arrogant for that.

The last re-design was annoying, but get-used-to-able. This one is way worse. The blurring of status and wall posts makes NO sense. If they changed that, it wouldn't be so bad. I think that's confusing a lot of people.

Besides that, it's such an obvious attempt to copy Twitter that it makes me wonder whether they really have any idea of what their strength is.

Honest to God, why would you absolutely lose your ability to make rational decisions because of a teeny, relatively fledgling competitor? Talk about an elephant being scared of a mouse.

It is HORRIBLE. My main beef? The stupid app notices! My home page right now is completely cluttered by one friend's quiz answers about people I don't even know (old system just posted one notice, which you could delete - now it's one for each of THEIR friends and you can't delete them). Also some stupid app notice another friend sent whereby they tagged irish people.

I like these friends. I don't want to hide their updates about their lives. But this app stuff is bull! I hate it! And it prevents things from getting on the feed that I might want.

I'd hoped Facebook would make it easier to keep in touch with friends and family but you know what? Email is fine too.

Facebook HAS to at least tweak this to let us get rid of these stupid apps. It's not enough that you can set your own app preferences - if a friend doesn't do that, we get stuck with them.

I don't see what the fuss is all about, seriously. i agree with one of the previous poster. Some facebook users are whiney as heck. I mean, Ok, it takes getting used to. I guess the happy medium would be to allow users to customize their profiles in some way.

It's not like what happened with bolt.com years back. The tried to be youtube and eventually ditched their old site after a short spell of naming it bolt 2. Now, THAT was justified, users fled in droves from bolt when they ditched 'classic' bolt.

It's not like facebook is pretending to be something its not, it's STILL facebook.

I think people are missing the point. The redesign is very unpopular and actually removes some features. It is an astonishing blunder. Twitter is about 1/20th as popular as Facebook, and while Facebook may see it as the future, dumbing down their own product to emulate Twitter is a step backward. Considering how minimal Twitter is, it doesn't take a genius to predict it will never become as popular as Facebook. This redesign would be fine if it was a lot more customizable. Those that enjoy the cluttered new interface will be happy, and those who enjoy the older look and features can remake it. It's amazing that Facebook assumes it's OK to force us all to Twitter when maybe 5% of its users actually do. Why force us?

The new stream is also a stalkers paradise. I've notice friends have curtailed their actions because they know anything they do will be broadcasted to all their friends.

Forcing its users is the problem I have. Just like Windows 7 forcing everyone to use the new Start "orb" menu and lack of classic menu. A redesign should have a beta just like anything else.

Yeah - it's too bad FB doesn't really care what we - the users - think about it. And that's it - they don't care! Or they would have ASKED us what WE - the USERS - wanted. They're going to do whatever the hell they want to because it's a free site. Since it's free - we don't really matter. It's business - it doesn't surprise me a bit.

As for "people freaking over the last redesign..." Yeah - and we didn't like that either! Of course we'll figure it out if we want o keep in touch w/ our friends and family - but being forced vs. Being asked is a huge difference. We may not pay for our accounts on FB, but they DO make money off of us - a LOT of it!

It would be much more acceptable if they were to spend more than a little TIME finding out what WE want! That last design wasn?t very long ago and these sudden changes are very frustrating to those not so immersed ion technology. And if the changes (improvements) made were actually what the masses WANTED ? it would be embraced more readily than changed that are less functional and are thrust upon us like a parent shoving medicine down a child?s throat while saying, ?I know what?s best for you.?

I already have a stream. It's Twitter. I don't need Facebook to mimic Twitter and I actually now use Facebook less as a result of the new design. There's less stuff of interest to me on there about my friends.
