CNET News' Caroline McCarthy is a downtown Manhattanite who believes that, despite popular opinion, the Web can actually help your social life. She's happily addicted to fun social-media tools from Twitter to Yelp to Facebook, sends an inordinate number of text messages, and has a tendency to waste time at the office reading restaurant blogs. Here, she explores all facets of the Web's gregarious side, as well as the unique tech culture in her home city of New York. (Don't call it Silicon Alley.)

Let's admit the bastards beat us
I move to dissolve the corporation
In a pool of margaritas
So let's switch off all the lights
And light up all the Luckies
Crankin' up the afterglow
'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
Talk about your major pain and suffering
Now our self-esteem is shattered
Show the world our mighty hidey-ho face
As we go sliding down the ladder
It was sweet up at the top
'Til that ill wind started blowing
Now it's cozy down below
'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
We gave it our best shot
But keep in mind we got a lot
The sky the moon good food and the weather
First-run movies -- does anybody get lucky twice?
Wouldn't it be nice...
Tell me can you dig it Miss Fugazy
Now it's gone from late to later
Frankly I could use a little face time
In the service elevator
And if Dave from Acquisitions
Wants to get in on the action
With his Handicam in tow
Well we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
Can it be the sorry sun is rising
Guess it's time for us to book it
Talk about the famous road not taken
In the end we never took it
And if somewhere on the way
We got a few good licks in
No one's ever gonna know
'Cause we're goin' out of business
Everything must go
Hows this? No wonder JohnS42's name is John...it is because he's LIKE A TOILET!!!
I realize I'm probably not as clever as you, but I'm okay with that.
Finally, both McCain and Obama spoke on Nov. 4th of a world where we need to unite together, not rip each other apart. If we can't achieve that on a simple forum we can't achieve it on a national scale. So what I'm asking to all you readers who hate Al Gore and Current and don't feel bad for the former employees is to look around at yourself, your neighbors, your country--everyone is getting laid off whether it's Detroit, Hollywood or Silicone valley. We all have mouths to feed and lives to lead, so show some compassion.
Ok, I'm done. I'm going to go look for a job now :)
It's nice to do what you love and are passionate about but you need to support yourself. Think. What did you do with the money you saved by living over the store or riding your bike to work. How can an adult be so foolish as to have $0 in the bank and nothing in savings? My G*d, I'd eat hamburger helper, helper, helper to save a cushion of cash for an event like this. Wake up and get going. Change your ways and certainly DO NOT wait for a handout. Unemployment is a "safety net" - not a hammock. It's limited as to time as well.
We'll get Obamania out of our system just like we did with Jimmy Carter and then this country will be back on track to move forward to create a level playing field for all without "entitlements", etc for the few who whine loudest.
You sacrificed not for filthy lucre but for the enrichment of all mankind and I'm sure there are those who appreciate the great gift you have given them (even if they're not sure what it was).
I wouldn't wish something like this even on a liberal, and it is my sincere hope that your new fuehrer is not successfull in strangling all business opportunities with his oppressive taxes and onerous regulations. If he does crush capital under his bootheel, there will only be the government left to work for and there are already plenty of Democrats in place to suck up the power jobs leaving only the low paying menial jobs for those who come to the well last.
You may be different though, you end with "I'm going to go look for a job now" which is GREAT because I'll bet that your gonna be a little more careful about who it is you work for and with the experience you have gained while serving mankind, you will probably have something to offer a prospective employer other than blind allegiance. Your positive attitude will serve you well in your quest.
I sincerely wish you the greatest success in your new endeavor (whatever that may be) and I hope that you and your family do not suffer long in the ranks of the unemployed.
In fact, I hope no one has to - but I see a dark cloud forming over the country that may not clear in my lifetime.
Have a nice day!
Also they do not violate any industry work standards....Ive received nothing but great treatment and wonderful benefits here. Anyone who thinks that Current is a hard place to work is naive and should try some of the other companies in the tech and entertainment industry which are run by idiots who have no actual idea how to manage a company. Ask some of the people in CNETs franchises how they feel especially at gamespot.com then you'll hear how a company is poorly managed.
Spoiled little rich kids out on the street.
If the whole country wasn't headed for this same disaster under Emperor Obama, it would be EVEN funnier!
