Look, I've been a life-long Windows user and now have 4 Macs.
I still think Macs suck for a couple reasons.

1) The notebooks do not display "millions of colors" as the spec sheets claim (anyone for a class action suit? I'm in!). Why does Apple have to lie to people, hasn't Job's gotten enough ego-stroking lately?

2) Too many keyboard keys: Ctrl + Alt + Command (or is it "Apple" key?) why so many? On windows Ctrl+V, Ctrl+C, Ctrl+Z, etc. On Mac, you have the identical application (say MS Office) and its "Cmd"+V, Cmd+C, Cmd+Z (and there isn't even a key marked "Cmd" on all but my latest Mac. And using Final Cut Pro, gosh, is it Shift+Alt+ left-mouse or what?

3) Worst mouse in U.S. history. One-button mouse was crap from the start; the fake two-button mouse with one-button and a left/right side is problematic at best. So I ditched it for a Microsoft mouse and I've never been happier. And the one-button mouse is yet another reason there were/are so many keyboard "control-style" keys. Try operating a Mac with one hand, can't be done.

But who would buy 4, if they suck... Hmmm.

"Try operating a Mac with one hand, can't be done."
Why are you operating with one? -- Ohh... I just figured that out.
Yikes

I've always been very amused by the Mac VS PC debates, but in light of today's growing trend towards interoperability, it's become even more pronounced.

In the end, the question is really just this - which computing platform best suits your personal style?

The endless arguments about price, form, and function are just semantics. Linux, Windows, and OS X all do the same thing - enable the user to solve problems. How the user chooses to do that is up to them. There is no Universally Better option, and there never will be.

I have a custom-built PC running Windows XP and Ubuntu 7.10. I have a laptop running Windows XP. I plan on purchasing an iPod Touch for mobile computing, and am trying very hard to get a Mac at work. Why? Because they all solve specific problems in ways I like.

That's the point, ne?

About The Macalope: An Apple blog

Born of the earth, forged in fire, the Macalope was branded "nonstandard" and "proprietary" by the IT world and considered a freak of nature. Part man, part Mac, and part antelope, the Macalope set forth on a quest to save his beloved platform. Long-eclipsed by his more prodigious cousin, the jackalope (they breed like rabbits, you know), the Macalope's time has come. Apple news and rumormonger extraordinaire, the Macalope provides a uniquely polymorphic approach. He is a member of the CNET Blog Network and is not an employee of CNET. Disclosure.
