Comments on: XO laptop: Better to give, receive or both?

The Get 1, Give 1 promotion for the $100 laptop is very tempting.

Get1 Give 1

I've always thought they should do this, sell them in the developed countries at a higher price that gives a second computer to a developing country. Not just because it will increase the supply though.

My understanding is that one of their unique features is the ability to see what others in the "community" are doing. If this community includes kids from all over the world, then what a wonderful tool. Our kids helping schoolkids in sub-Saharan Africa with their math, kids in South America giving our children Spanish lessons, or helping with their Spanish homework.

The possibilities are endless and it would be a great, first introduction to the idea that the world as we know it is bigger than any of us imagine.

Still concern about safety issues

It is very tempting to give and receive one. But safety is really a huge concern. We have a 9 years old, we worried sick when she was on the webkins thing. I am an IT consultant all my life, a developer now an architect, I still have problems prevent her from accessing what I don't want her to see and get access on what I want her to see. If I need to really achieve that goal, I need to sit with her all the time when she uses the computer. It is a fine piece of technology though... dilemma dilemma...

XO Laptop Giveaway program

Why are we helping kids in another country when we cannot help our own kids. There are many kids in the United States that could benefit from the Buy One, Get one program. The only people that can afford it is upper class, so do we tell children who's family has no money that their kids aren't important??
