Comments on: Don't believe the hype: Super Mario Galaxy is not that great
It seems almost everyone has called Super Mario Galaxy the game to beat this generation. But if you ask Don Reisinger, the game doesn't live up to the hype.

The world may have thrilled to the potential for a Google Phone, but what Google actually unveiled is its plan for a new smartphone world order.

If your serious about your review then its rather pafetic.
So much is wrong that I cannot be bothered to list it. Scrap it and start it again.
This is GOTY
The graphics are absolutely not noticeable better than gamecube games, and there are NO innovations in gameplay except for a few obligatory inclusions of wii-mote motion sensing, which don't enhance the game play so much as alleviate the repetitiveness in parts.
Also, the worlds in this game by their very nature are fragmented, discontinuous, and lacking in "atmosphere." Most of the fun of earlier 3D Mario games came from freely exploring a beautiful open environment.
I was really expecting a lot more in terms of new ideas from the creative minds at nintendo. Color me unimpressed by the whole "gravity" nonsense.... since when is changing the direction of gravity in a virtual world any sort of an accomplishment?
Bottom line, this game is a decent mario game, but is nothing new and doesn't live up to the revolutionary legacy of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World, or Mario 64. I cannot imagine why it's gotten such uniformly stellar reviews..... either people just have a soft spot for Mario and really WANT there to be a great game available for the Wii, or it's been too long since they've played Mario 64 and dont realize that this is the exact same game with spinning instead of punching and a gravity gimmick.
Oh dear....
This game is quite clearly a game which is more graphically advanced than any gamecube game. The whole point of this game was to go back and show similar greatness to what Mario 64 was, and extend on it. Any true Mario fans who have played all previous Mario game, especially Mario 64 will appreciate this game .There's no excuse for you not to love this game if you love Mario 64.
Needless to say you and the reviewer are the minority.
I hope people who read this review will check out GameRankings (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/915692.asp) where the average score amongst industry reviewers for Super Mario Galaxy is 97.4% making it the 2nd highest rated videogame (behind Zelda: OoT which has 97.6%)
On another note, is this guy for real? Did he seriously not like it that much? It reaks of Flame-Bait. It's just that none of his critisms make any sense (to me anyway).
p.s. Mario 2 US is awesome.
I do like that the game is set up in small chunks so I can play it 15 minutes at a time though.
It's the best game on the wii. The graphics are the best and clearly have stretched the capibilities of the wii to maximum so any score below 10 for graphics is a joke!
How is it tacked on?
The move is a spin you shake to spin..that's ideal. The controls are perfect.
Storyline is the same, it always is, but it doesn't matter because the game is amazing.
Anyone whoagrees with the reviewer has no clue about whats good and bad in games!
Don't come back with it's my opinion crap as well, I don't like Halo very much..but I know its a quality game and deservers the highs core sit gets!
You could make a strong case that the author of this review did not in fact go into this game with a "neutral point of view" as he obviously strongly dislikes the Wii: "at what point will everyone realize that the Wii is a fun device to play when a group of people are around, but quite boring when it's just you?"
My respect for the author is not diminished by his stated preference for Assassin's Creed or COD4 over Galaxy. In fact, that explains a lot as those games didn't strike me as very fun. To each his own, as always. What I don't respect, however, is the lack of integrity of a writer who describes something the following way:
"downright ugly"
"gimmicky"
"dumb"
"out-dated and stupid" (about the story; this guy apparently plays Mario games for their compelling stories).
It was a poorly written article. Reading it, I got the feeling he didn't actually play the game as it was so exaggerated, e.g. his complaint: "Why must I sit through drawn-out text discussions of the story when all I really want to do is play the game?" when there is only about a minute of this in the whole damn game (the story book is entirely optional).
I know it's comfortable to dismiss critics as fanboys, but to say that Nintendo fans simply "need to get their heads out of their ***** and look at a game from a neutral point of view" shows a lack of respect for the variety of opinion you claim to defend.
Personally, I think Galaxy did live up to the hype. It was better than Sunshine, which was fun but set back by a series of minor flaws, e.g. camera issues, a relief after the regurgitated disappointment that was Twilight Princess. See? You don't need to be a blind Nintendo fanboy to take issue with this poor excuse for a review.
To address your comment about it being ugly, that it's style. it's cutesy.
Finally, you paved over a lot of the great aspects of the game. You talked about gameplay for about 1/10 of your review, while gameplay is the biggest aspect of Mario games, and you didn't talk about sound at all. The sounds AWESOME!!
But maybe your not the type of gamer who likes Mario games. Thats ok. Just go back to playing other ove-rated games.

- First of all, let me just say that I love Super Mario Galaxy. However, even if I didn't, I would still strongly disagree with one point of your review: the graphics. Did you play Super Mario Galaxy in 480p widescreen? I have, and I've played Resident Evil 4 in 480p as well. Super Mario Galaxy is undeniably superior from a technical perspective, and certainly at least equal from an artistic perspective. By the way, I've played BioShock, which is considered one of the best looking games of this generation. And I still think Galaxy looks stunningly beautiful. In fact, I really doubt any Wii game's graphics are ever going to top Galaxy's, so you should probably stop playing games on the console and stick to the PS3 and X360.

Showing 2 of 2 pages (39 Comments)There are so many "wow" moments in Super Mario Galaxy. My jaw dropped and my eyes widened on several occasions. I felt the Wii-mote integration was superbly done; very intuitive. Hey, I liked Sunshine too, but I only played the bare minimum required to beat the final boss. I played all the way through Galaxy (all 120 stars) and it's not an experience I'll soon forget. The flawless control, the brilliant level design, the spectacular soundtrack, the extraordinary art direction, and that special Nintendo charm...it all comes together.
Don't get me wrong though, I'm not bashing you for having an opinion.
