Comments on: Stern blames 'rights' for iPhone app no-show

Howard Stern discussed why his show isn't available on the Sirius XM iPhone app. It seems that his $100 million-per-year salary isn't enough for inclusion in an iPhone app.

Funny how one of the best paid Sirius hosts is on the least Sirus outlets. Seems like Sirus forgot to negotiate a good contract for the money they are paying.

Wait - you mean Sirius/XM is still in business?
by Mergatroid Mania June 23, 2009 11:32 AM PDT
I didn't listen to him before he switched to Sirus, and I don't listen to him now.

No great loss.

And yet you not only took the time to read this article, but reply to it. Interesting.

@ patmcg - I too don't listen, yetI read this article because I was wondering why XM screwed up so badly, as Stern is a large factor in what keeps XM afloat.

Apple shouldn't profit from Stern. I always knew Stern and friends were greedy, but that's a bit much. Howard would profit too. So would Artie.

I know Stern struggled a lot in his life with a lot of "suits" causing him crap, but now that he controls his own rights, he is just like those suits he despises so much.

Isn't the Sirius app FREE. How is Apple profiting from Howard Stern. Perhaps he is just bitter that the iPhone isn't something he can claim to have invented.

Apple will not profit at all from Stern. The Sirius app is free. BUT you must have an internet membership through Sirius which costs and extra $2.99 per month. So it is Sirius who is making the money, not Apple.

Yeah, exactly. I'm a HUGE Stern fan, but this is really lame. Sirius/XM is in the dumps and this would help the company out but Howard is being greedy. Unbelievable!
by gfunk5299 June 23, 2009 1:13 PM PDT
I suspect that Sirus has to pay Apple royalties to have their app published on the iPhone network. I would also suspect that Sirius wants to get some of that money back from Stern. Or it might just be that Stern simply refuses to be part of Sirius paying royalties to Apple to have the Sirius app published on the iPhone.
by gomer43 June 23, 2009 4:12 PM PDT
to gfunk5299: No, Sirius does NOT pay Apple anything for free apps. If the app is free, it's completely free. Only when a developer charges for an app does it have to give Apple a portion of the proceeds.
by rdupuy11 June 24, 2009 8:45 AM PDT
The app store helps apple sell hardware, phones and mp3 players, they most certainly do make a profit.

Forget Howard, I don't know why so many people follow him. He's a greedy slime bal who things that 100 million for 4 days of work is too little, but he claims to be a man of the people.

And his excuse is bull because you can listen to stern online on Sirius's site so I don't get why what is essentially the same thing is blocked on the iPhone.

Its weird to me because when Flash 10 launches for Android, Windows Mobile, Symbian, and WebOS they'll have access to the full Sirius Online catalog, and sub sequentially Howard Stern. while iPod Touch/iPhone users who paid for a UI overhead will be left out in the cold

Why doesn't Howard Stern rather link up with an appropriate partner, like Port-a-Potty?

Thanks for the tip! Downloaded and paid for the app...and it works (with Stern) without paying a monthly fee to Sirius (unless you want higher quality sound).

Stern is a d0uche. I purchased a Sirius radio and subscription when he moved over to satallite radio. What a waste. I stopped listening after two weeks. A few years later, and nobody cares about Stern anymore. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

"Stern sidekick Artie Lange chimed in, saying, "Apple shouldn't profit off Howard Stern."

A bit full of themselves aren't they?

Baba Booey clarified on Twitter that the Stern channel's inclusion on the iphone app would be infringing on the contract with Howard TV. This has nothing to do with profit for Stern. He simply already signed an exclusive deal with HowardTV which is legally preventing the channel's availablity on the app..

Gary clarified that was not his Twitter account, but someone posing as him.
by jeriatrixs June 25, 2009 7:49 PM PDT
hey brain child. that information comes from a guy on Twitter who was pretending to be Gary Del'Abote. they talked about this on the show, That was totally false. I, pretty sure that Sirius XM doesnt want to pay app store royalties or Howard doesnt want to sign off on it. either was forget both sirius, xm, and steve jobs. Just get the pocket tunes app. XM sirius's loss is Pocket tunes' BIG BIG TIME GAME.

I am pleasantly surprised: So far, at least, this page hasn't been overrun by Stern's drones. They usually bury a page like this in fawning praise of the Big Bird, and proclaim him the Inventor of Everything Good.

I do think he's a smart guy and a pleasure to listen to -- not nearly as crude, most of the time, as his reputation suggests. But this is ridiculous.

Still again, a pleasant surprise to find civility here....

Um, in case you missed it, he is getting paid $100M/year!!! Seems like he could throw Sirius a bone here.

Yea like you would give up a penny to your boss to fix the window or AC in your office. Yea you would benefit fromk it but its not your responsibility, Did you hear? A-Rod is paying for plumbing repairs at yankee stadium. hes rich right? why not?

Howard has an existing contract with InDemand for broadcasting his TV channel (Howard TV). That contract forbids streaming to platforms other than satellite radio. Though I'm not a Howard fan, it's not greed keeping the show off the app despite Artie's idiotic comment about Apple profiting from Howard.

You can sign up to sirius.com WITHOUT a satellite radio and stream him that way to your computer!

dolamite, it was revealed that that twitter source was not Gary and the quotes were retracted.

Stern, he's nothing but a low down, double dealing, back stabbing, larcenous perverted worm. Hangin's to good for him! Burnin's to good for him! He should be torn into itsy-bitsy pieces and buried alive!

I watched the film "Private Parts" years ago and from that I thought that Howard Stern was hilarious. However, after a few trips to the US and the opportunity to listen to the "real thing" on the radio I discovered that he isn't as funny as in the film (well, he wasn't really funny at all). Given this I don't think he is any great loss.

Good I say. There is much better Sirius/XM programming available now that you can get from the app. That is Ron and Fez and Opie and Anthony. Howard shut the door on himself as he becomes more and more irrelevant.

Stern is an idiot. I totally forgot about him. I'm amazed (seriously) that he still has an audience.

Stern was the reason (or one of them) I didn't get sat radio. I'm not going to pay for a service that pays for that idiot.
