I keep IE updated but never use it as my primary browser. Microsoft's Update website won't run without it, but I've never found any other app that won't run under FireFox. I also keep an extension called "run current page in IE" installed just in case. MSIE pales beside FF IMHO.

To answer the question in the original post, I think disabling Internet Explorer 8 is a very valuable option, in environments where the user is not the system administrator. For example, in a corporation that standardizes on Firefox, disabling IE means that the tech support department won't have to check that the user loaded the correct browser.

I plan to disable IE on computers that I set up for my family, friends, etc, for the exact reason above. Security and usability aside, I think IE deserves to get kicked out of the Web playground after crapping on Web developers for the past 15 years.

I had a terrible problem with IE 8 hanging. I kept researching the problem and finally found a response from MS advising me to check the Add-ons. I followed the procedure( go to Tools-Manage Add-ons-disabled all of the Add-ons and then enable them one by one until IE hangs again) Guess which add-ons caused the trouble? GOOGLE! Imagine that!
