The pantent that the iphone have are unfair and should not have been awarded. Company is not supposed to have a monopoly and thats what Apple is trying to do, own the market for smartphones. I like the fact that Palm has had some of its patents stolen from Apple in the iphone. I say go Palm! I am very excited for something new to hit the industry.

here is a thought.. how about palm bring a law suit against everything with a touch screen because about 20 years ago they pioneered that technology.. or all the smart phones because all they really are are upgraded copied versions of palms pda.. Palm has had pdas and touch screen devices before the iphone was idea on jobs napkin.. and as far as im concerned the iphone is the most overratted POS ive seen since the ipod came out.. i give it to apple for advertising the hell out of their products, but there are way better mp3 players and multimedia devices out there than the ipod. also, there are a ton of phones out there that are better than the iphone as well. advertising made the iphone what it is.. not its superrior technology.. cause it doesnt have superrior technology. You cant even listen to music and surf the web.. my WM phone can listen to music surf the web and my web browser has flash.. the iphone has apps thats it.. itunes is garbage and apple should stick to laptops. kudos on advertising though.. thats what made it what it is.

Couldn't agree more!Very good observation! I'm hoping to get a Palm Pre as a possible upgrade to my Samsung i730 which I LOVE! I couldn't deal with no tactile qwerty and do not care for any of the NON one handed horizontal qwerty keyboard Pocket PCs. This thing seems to have the best of the iPhone and Touch Pro, if not better GUI and design, is thin, has a camera with a flash, AND a sweet ONE HANDED VERTICAL SLIDING QWERTY! Its about time! I'm just wondering about adjusting to Palm OS over Windows Mobile and its detailed specs as far as memory capacity processor and such.

@cameronr31, if Apple's iPhone ends up with a monopoly position, they will have earned that position with innovation and hard work -- and I have no doubt they'll maintain it with innovation and hard work too, and not by abusing that position as a monopoly. They managed to keep iPod sales between 75 - 85% for years, simply by offering the best solution.

@jhootska, if Palm has a valid patent on touch screens, by all means they should sue. They do not. And come on now, you're not even trying. Apple created the PDA market with their Newton long before the Palm Pilot came out.

A lot of people have this idea that Apple somehow "creates better ads" or "does marketing better than anyone". Sure that's true. But it takes more than a large marketing budget to steal significant market share from entrenched mobile phone companies like the iPhone did. It takes a lot more than a clever ad campaign to claw back most of the high-end computer market from Microsoft (and a significant portion of the mid-range desktop, and notebook markets too). No, it takes excellent products to do that. A product is not the sum of it's feature list. They get that. Apple makes wonderful products because they make design and engineering decisions holistically. They make careful compromises and always consider how their products fits into people's lives.

I'm a avid Mac Supporter using Mac computers both personally and professionally, but Apple has to be smoking crack if they think users are going to continue to support them when they stifle creativity, future innovation and competition.

I personally don't like the iPhone and ATT for that matter. I own 3 Macs (Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, and Powerbook G4) and have been a long supporter of Apple recommending it heavily to my Windows PC users. As a tech consultant, I work all the time with my clients and their 3G iPhones and know the plus and minuses of the iPhone.

As I read through these comments here, I like many people are old Palm users and need simple things like Copy and Paste, Synchronizing Data with something other then MobileMe (Google Calendar, Exchange, etc), and the ability to use a portable hand held without restrictions and limitation provided by the manufacture (Apple) and cell provider (ATT).

Palm is not perfect and for years was hampered by both Sprint and Verizon not providing simple things we now all expect (built-in WIFI, USB phone tethering, etc) that should be available in all hand held and cellular devices. Thankfully our great wish and desire came from someone other then Apple and is willing to step up to the plate and play ball.

Obviously Palm has finally woken up, smelled the coffee and about to come out with what we all need?the perfect handheld that hopefully will waken Apple, Blackberry, Google and even Microsoft (who has been in a slumber way too long).

My recommendation to Apple is simply...Step Up or Shut Up!

If you don't like the competition after owning the market for 3 years, maybe you should come out with something new and innovative instead of sitting on your laurels watching creativity pass you by.
